UWIC is entering two womens teams and one mens . Training has been promising and augurs well for both men and women , who will be competing as defending champions. On the mens side, Dean Manning won a bronze medal on Parallel Bars at the North European Championships and also made Vault final. Lloyd Byrne made Floor final. Both were representing Wales and both are members of the Welsh Commonwealth games squad and are currently preparing for final trials. In the London University Open Tumbling and Sports Acrobatics competition UWIC won the Mens and Womens Individual Tumbling events through Jack Jefferson and Victoria Bould ; Simon Pittman taking bronze in the mens. In Sports Acro Jack and Victoria won gold in the mixed pairs event; Jenny Simkins/Joanne Lindores / Victoria Bould finished with a bronze in the Trios competition. Claire Wright has established herself as one of Great Britain's most successful trampolinists ; Current British Champion, Claire won the gold medal at the Four Way Trampoline International Match (Denmark v France v Germany v Great Britain), in Naestved (DEN) in April. She also took synchro gold at the World cup event in Russia , and a silver at the World Games. Claire also set a world record score for a synchronised routine! During World War II, trampolines were used to train pilots and navigators in fitness and orientation. After the war, astronauts trained on trampolines to develop body positioning for space flight missions. Welcome The History Of Trampolining It has been said that the first type of trampolining was done by the Eskimos who used to toss each other up into the air on a Walrus skin something like the sheet used by firemen to catch people jumping out of the windows of houses which were on fire. There are postcards depicting the Eskimos being tossed up in a Walrus skin. There also is some evidence of people in England being tossed up into the air by a number of people holding a blanket. The trampoline itself, according to circus lore, was first developed by an artist called Du Trampolin who saw the possibility of using the trapeze safety net as a form of propulsion and landing device and experimented with different systems of suspension, eventually reducing the net to a practical size for separate performance. By the late 1800s, top performers were turning double and triple somersaults over rows of horses or elephants. These may or may not be the true origins of the sport of trampolining but it is certain that in the early years of the 20th century there were stage acts which used a "bouncing bed " on the stage to amuse audiences. The bouncing bed was in reality a form of small trampoline covered by bedclothes on which the acrobats performed mostly comedy routines. In the early 1930s, George Nissen made a trampoline in his garage and used it to help with his diving and tumbling activities. He then felt that he could entertain audiences and also let them participate in his demonstrations. Thus were the beginnings of a new sport.
