THE HISTORY OF TRAMPOLINING
Walrus skins
It has been said that the first type of trampolining was done by the Eskimos who used to toss each other up into the air on a Walrus skin something like the sheet used by firemen to catch people jumping out of the windows of houses which were on fire. In Anchorage airport, Alaska, there are postcards depicting the Eskimos being tossed up in a Walrus skin. There also is some evidence of people in England being tossed up into the air by a number of people holding a blanket. These may or may not be the true origins of the sport of trampolining but it is certain that in the early years of the 20th century there were stage acts which used a "bouncing bed" on the stage to amuse audiences. The bouncing bed was in reality a form of small trampoline covered by bedclothes on which the acrobats performed mostly comedy routines.

Brief Description The sports of trampolining and tumbling are as old as man, a
reflection of man's desire to defy the ever-pervading presence of gravity. Judging 5 judges mark a routine for style. They take into consideration whether
the routine has good form (tidy with straight legs and arms, head
controlled, body straight, ...), is kept in the middle of the bed and is
off a consistent height. Additionally, with voluntary routines,
difficulty (tariff) is assessed and this is added to the mark for style
(form). Style has 3 times the weighting of difficulty (it used to be
number of years ago), so the sport is very much more an aesthetic one,
and safer too. Difficulty The amount of movement a performer makes, whether somersaulting
or twisting, decides on the rating (tariff) of a move, i.e.
  • for every 90 degrees of somersault 0.1 is given
  • for every 180 degrees of twist 0.1 is given
Therefore, a double (tucked) somersault with 1/2 twist gets 0.9. At the somersault level, piked and straight moves receive a 0.1 bonus

Trampolining
Sports Profile: Trampolining
What:
Competitive Trampolining, l(ike all artistic sports) is a judged sport (like gymnastics or diving). It is the sport of bouncing up and down on a trampoline bed, whilst performing recognised shapes and moves.

The most notable thing about Trampolining, is the height with which trampoline gymnasts reach to perform their moves. The best Trampolinists often pack their 10-move routines with multiple twists and flips, which to the untrained eye can be a confusing but fascinating blur of movement.
Disciplines:
There are four disciplines that make up the sport of Trampolining. Firstly, there is the individual Trampoline section where two routines of 10 moves are performed; a compulsory routine and a voluntary routine on the normal 4ft by 6ft trampoline. Synchronised Trampolining involves two Trampolinists performing two routines along side each other, preferably in perfect synchronization. Power tumbling involves a 25 metre long sprung tumbling mat where fast paced tumbling is performed, and a major trick is performed out of the sprung mat for the dismount. The double mini is the fourth of the disciplines, and is a long narrow trampoline where a short run up is required, and a trick is performed on to the apparatus and a trick is performed off.
History:
It has been said that the Eskimos, who used to toss each other up into the air on Walrus skins invented the first type of Trampolining, but the first manufactured trampoline as we know it today was created by two men; George Nissen and Larry Griswold allegedly in George’s garage in 1935. An iron frame was bolted together and a piece of canvas was laid in the middle in which they inserted grommets along the side and springs to hold the canvas to the frame. Nissen called it a trampolining after the Spanish word ‘El trampolin’ which is translated as ‘diving board’.

The trampoline stands on a metal frame about 1,15 meter high with a length of 4,58 meters and a width of 2,91 meters. The mat is fitted to the metal frame with large springs to make better higher jumps. The bed itself is also made from an elastically material. The best make jumps higher than 8 meters above the ground. The springs are protected with a soft blue band.
A routine or serie consist of ten following different jumps. When during a serie the blue band is touched, the jumps afterwards are not countered.
A competition consist of three series, one serie consist of ten compulsory jumps and the other two consist of ten free to choose jumps. The more difficult jumps you make, the more points you get. The most points can be achieved with double or triple somersaults in combination with twists, of course as best as you could perform. Out of the first two series the best of 8 go to the finals.
