Walrus skins
It has been said that the Eskimos, who used to toss each other up into the air on a Walrus skin, did the first type of trampolining; something like the sheet used by firemen to catch people jumping out of the windows of houses, which were on fire. In Anchorage airport, Alaska, there are postcards depicting the Eskimos being tossed up in a Walrus skin.
There also is some evidence of people in England being tossed up into the air by a number of people holding a blanket. These may or may not be the true origins of the sport of trampolining but it is certain that in the early years of this century there were stage acts which used a "bouncing bed" on the stage to amuse audiences. The bouncing bed was in reality a form of small trampoline covered by bedclothes on which the acrobats performed mostly comedy routines.
Trapeze artists
The trampoline itself, according to circus lore, was first developed by an artist called Du Trampolin who saw the possibility of using the trapeze safety net as a form of propulsion and landing device and experimented with different systems of suspension, eventually reducing the net to a practical size for separate performance.

SAFE TRAMPOLINING T he popularity of trampolining as a form of home exercise and outdoor entertainment has been steadily increasing. There are about 50,000 trampolines sold each year and an estimated 250,000 in use in Australia. Trampolines can be great fun. When used properly they can improve balance and co-ordination skills for children, used improperly they can be dangerous. The Victorian Injury Surveillance System (Hazard, No 13) indicates that trampolines are on the top ten contributing factors to sport and recreational injury for children and that half of these injuries would not have occurred with simple safety practices. WHO IS INJURED AND HOW? Most injuries (76%) occur in backyards. Unlike other injuries girls account for just over half (55%) of all trampoline injuries and they also account for the majority (70%) of serious injuries. Children aged 5 to 9 years have the highest number of injuries. Winter months have fewer trampoline injuries. Upper extremity injuries (hand, arm etc) account for 40% of injuries, lower extremities for (26%) and head injury (23%). Forearm and wrist

http://www.arach.net.au/~zensunni/tramp/tramp-faq.html
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ISN'T TRAMPOLINING DANGEROUS? No. Like all sports, trampolining has a very comprehensive set of safety regulations. It is recommended that activity should only occur under the supervision of persons who have obtained a trampolining coaching qualification and who will know about equipment standards and learning the skills involved. WHAT IS REQUIRED OF A COMPETITIVE TRAMPOLINE? Power is required for top level jumping so that height, and therefore time is available to execute the double, triple and even quadruple somersaults and twists involved. This necessitates a frame that sets a bed a metre off the ground and that is approximately 2.14m (7 feet) by 4.28m (14 feet). The bed is made of material (nylon or string) of about 6mm (1/4 inches) width. WHEN, HOW AND WHERE DID TRAMPOLINING ORIGINATE? For hundreds of years there have been circus rebound acts. The modern trampoline was invented by George Nissen, USA in 1936 and spread to Europe in the late 1940s. The name "trampoline" comes from the Spanish word for a diving board. George Nissen is now 88 and lives in San Diego. WHAT IS TRAMPOLINING LIKE?
