Welcome to the catamaran design website of Derek Kelsall, the site for professional and home boat builders
Kelsall stands for experience in multihull design and build with the unique, time saving KSS method.
THE X-KAT TRAILER/SAILERS. The Derek Kelsall designed, X-Kat range are the first convenient trailer/sailer catamarans. The telescoping beam system (patent filed) allows approx 50% reduction in width by sliding the hulls together while afloat; the beam parts stowing within the hulls. The platform between the hulls and the forward trampoline, supported on an "A frame", fold as the hulls come together. For example, the X-Kat 26 has standard 2.5m towing width while the sailing width is just under 5m. Each hull width is 1.2m, which gives reasonable accommodation and even cosy doubles aft in each hull. The 26 has 1.7m headroom within the hulls as well as large opening hatch for use in fine weather. "X-Kat.1" was the prototype 23 footer, built to prove the basic concept as well as to be the testbed for the other features that are essential to convenient trailer/sailing. There would be little point in being able to reduce the width in moments, if getting the rig in place takes an hour. It is clear that the final X-Kat package, which addresses all of these points, competes with the very best on this score.

91. Trailer-sailer And Dinghy Designs By Keith Callaghan
into practice, but in 1994 I retired from my career in IT on terms which made it feasible for me to finance the building of my longplanned trailer-sailer.
http://www.bluelightning.co.uk/profile.htm
home send email purchase plans Profile of the designer - Keith Callaghan In the early 1970s I designed many Merlin Rockets (14ft UK 2 person national development class). About 110 Merlins were built to these designs between 1968 and 1977. They were quite successful, winning the Silver Tiller series in 1971, 1973 and 1974, and being placed in the first 6 at the National Championships 7 times between 1972 and 1976.During this period I also designed the Harrier , a GRP single-hander (70 of which were built), and a National 12 and International 14 or two. I produced my last "20th century" Merlin Rocket design in 1977 (HAZARD, in the photo on the left), and did not take up boat design again until BLUE LIGHTNING in 1994. However, I did not give up sailing completely during the intervening period, and for many years enjoyed sailing on the East Coast and elsewhere in LIVELY , a Yachting World Rambler, built in 1954. LIVELY is a 17ft LOA 2 berth centreboard cruiser, of double chine plywood construction, designed by Jack Holt and purchased as a half-decker. I added a small cabin, retaining an 8ft cockpit, and completely re-designed the rig. My fun with LIVELY as a trailable (but very small) weekender sailboat got me thinking about designing a larger, faster and more easily maintained boat. For years I was too busy to put my ideas into practice, but in 1994 I retired from my career in I.T. on terms which made it feasible for me to finance the building of my long-planned trailer-sailer.

LINKS Boat Sites Communities General TRANSLATE The TLC 19 was commissioned for production building in GRP by Nebe Boats of Cape Town. Her South African builder is now Commercial Lumber , of Cape Town. She is also available from Marintek in Istanbul, Turkey. Marintek have modified her hatch detailing to bring her in line with the EU regulations. She is offered in two formats, either with swing keel and pivoting rudder blade or with fixed keel and fixed rudder. The swing keel version is fully trailable, with a keel-up draft of 0,65m, allowing her to also be brought close in to protected beaches. The swing keel is totally outside the hull so that it does not compromise the interior. Two fixed keels have been drawn, a wing keel of 1,1m draft and a bulbed fin keel of 1,45m draft. The rig is fractional sloop with fully battened main, swept spreaders and single lower shrouds. Combined with an adjustable backstay bridle, this gives an easily handled rig with enough options for the performance sailor. The mast is deck stepped with a hinged foot to ease raising and lowering. The mast compression loads are taken up below decks by a post which also supports the adjustable table.

Caleb Shipmate The Shipmate Senior is a true trailer sailer that can easily be towed behind an average family car. With care and suitable conditions she can be launched and retrieved from the water by one person. Twice I took 'Lisa' (The Shipmate) to the West Country for estuary cruising. First we went to the River Tamar and Plymouth Sound, then the following year we went to St Just in Roseland near Falmouth. Both of these cruises were single-handed ventures entailing several days and nights. I joined the Shipmate Association, but unfortunately I was not able to attend any of their rallies. The Association at that time was very active with meetings mainly in the Midlands. While cruising the East Coast Rivers and sailing off West Mersea, my Shipmate experienced a knock-down which resulted in the cockpit being swamped. The situation was potentially dangerous because the cockpit was not self-draining. Only by rapid bailing with a bucket did I manage to get the boat on a level keel. Since the companionway was rather low, water could easily have flowed into the cabin. I believe this design weakness may have been put right with later models. I also felt the boat could have performed better had she had a much heavier centreboard. Less sail changing would have been needed. On the whole, I thought she was a super little day boat or weekender.

RED a 27 Foot Trailer-Sailer
Designed and built by Todd Miller Quilcene Washington Afloat in Fisherman's Harbor on Lopez Island Washington in the American San Juans After just over four years of building after work, weekends and summer vacations we launched RED a twenty seven foot trailer sailer on July 5th, 2003. It was a beautiful day and lots of friends, family and neighbors showed up to help. RED is a multichine plywood ballasted daggerboard sloop. I designed and built it for the goal of land cruising behind my pickup then water cruising. I teach school and my wife Viviann and I plan on using the boat for extensive cruising during the summer, first on the freeway and then on unexplored waters. It is 8 1/2 ft wide and displaces about 4200 pounds dry. It has a steel foil-shaped daggerboard with 1200 lbs of lead for a total weight of 1500 pounds. It has a raised deck forward, kind of like a Lake Union dreamboat and a house with a little doghouse (inspired from N.W. gillnetters) where I can escape the N.W. weather. Under the doghouse I have 6"6" head room. The cabin proper has about 5' 8" so I have to stoop a little. The raised foredeck makes the vee berth downright spacious without looking clunky. It is framed with two chine logs and sawn frames. I originally considered stitch and glue but they always look sort of banana-like as you can't torture the plywood as much to get a more interesting shape. It is fairly lightly built as the displacement suggests. I have been using the scantlings of the Thunderbird. The bulk of it is 1/2" plywood. The hull is sheathed both sides with a layer of 6 oz. cloth in epoxy. The house and decks are epoxied and the exterior is sheathed with cloth. I used Awlgrip on all the exterior surfaces. I discovered carbon fiber cloth about half way into construction and used it to save weight and add strength on such things as the hinging rudder. I also used honey comb panels for the hatches and door which is very nice as they don't hurt you if they fall on you. It is powered by a 9.9 H.P. Yamaha outboard that is in a well. This has proven to work well as the sound is kept down.
