What Is It? Tai chi (pronounced "tie chee") is an ancient Chinese discipline that integrates mind, body, and spirit. Practitioners use meditation and deep breathing as they move through a series of continuous exercises, called "forms," which resemble slow-moving ballet. Though it originated as a martial art (evolving from qigong), tai chi is now practiced more for its therapeutic benefits, which include reducing stress, promoting balance and flexibility, and even easing arthritis pain. According to one legend, tai chi was developed in China in the thirteenth century. As the story goes, a man who was a monk and martial arts master invented it after watching a fight between a crane and a snake. Being the bigger and more powerful of the two, the bird appeared to have the advantage. However, the snake's elusive movements enabled it to win. Even today, practitioners who perform tai chi as a martial art use subtle movements to dodge blows and turn an attacker's own momentum against him. Tai chi is far more than a mode of self-defense, however. For hundreds of years, groups of Chinese people, many of them elderly, have performed its fluid, graceful movements in parks throughout China as a way of staying vital. Today, many people in the United States, Canada, and Europe have become interested in attaining the health benefits of this ancient art as well.

Understanding Flowing and Firmness The principles of flowing and firmness contribute to our overall sense of well-being when applied to other aspects of life, such as mental confidence (firmness) and open-mindedness (flowing), or emotional stability (firmness) with compassion (flowing). Conflict resolution benefits greatly by focusing calmly at the center (firmness) in search of alternatives and compromises (flowing). In everything we do, balance is the key to success. This is the lesson of Yin and Yang...the balanced relationship between firmness and flowing...to make it not only a part of our daily practice session, but in our lives, as well. If we can do that, then we will be practicing, as well as living, T'ai Chi during every moment of every day. Excerpts from "Understanding Flowing and Firmness"
by Ting Kuo-Piao ( T'ai Chi Vol. 24, No. 5)

TAI CHI AND POSTURE by Bill Walsh In Tai Chi Chuan, posture is related to mechanical efficiency. Tai Chi Chuan is a slow-moving choreography that asks its practitioners to sense each minute shift of weight while paying attention to the principles. The first principle “Lift the head” suggests we delicately lift the head as if we were supporting a light object on top of it. There is a specific spot on the crown of the head that should extend towards heaven. This idea keeps the practitioner lengthening the spine and consciously improving posture during practice. Yang Cheng Fu, third generation Master of the Yang family, wrote a paper detailing ten principles that should accompany form practice. In this paper he specifies the relationships between body parts that should be established by the mind and spirit’s intention during practice. It is important that form practice be done slowly. This requires moment-to-moment attentiveness to posture, enabling the practitioner to better perform each movement more efficiently. Better posture thus translates into better balance and flexible and greater strength. There are two ways to enhance the benefits of Tai Chi as a postural exercise. The first is doing the Tai Chi form practice lower and slower. Slow and low transitions are more difficult to do smoothly because the load on the single weighted leg increases. The task then becomes one of smoothly transitioning between postures without bobbing up and down. This requires the practitioner to organize his or her posture between movements more carefully.
