Tai Chi Chuan
A Slow Dance for Health
John Cheng, MD THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 27 - NO. 6 - JUNE 1999 F ew low-velocity, low-impact exercise programs have high appeal for all ages and can be done almost anywhere. One that meets these specifications is tai chi chuan. Pronounced "tie jee choo-on" and often simply called "tai chi," this traditional Chinese conditioning exercise combines deep breathing, relaxation, and slow, gentle, structured movement. Tai chi offers health benefits that are particularly attractive to older adults, and classes have sprung up all over the United States in recent years.
Ancient Roots
Chinese martial artist Chang San Feng is credited with developing tai chi over 700 years ago as a method of self-defense for monks. Since then it has evolved into an art that exercises the body and mind. Tai chi literally means "moving life force." Tai chi's choreographed movements, called forms, resemble a slow, graceful dance (figure 1). These forms were designed to mimic animal movements, such as those of the snake and the white crane. Because tai chi requires concentration, some people describe it as moving meditation. Tai chi is based on the Taoist belief that good health results from balanced chi , or life force. An imbalance in or obstruction of the chi is said to result in health problems. According to this belief, chi can be made up of varying degrees of

The Alexander Technique and Tai Chi Chuan? By Stacy Gehman, Seattle, WA. ( StacyG@drizzle.com Introduction Tai Chi Chuan is noted for its graceful beauty and subtle power. Its practice requires an attention that is both inwardly focused and directed outward to all that surrounds us. It is the realization of the Taoist practice of doing through non-doing. As such, learning Tai Chi presents the student with apparent paradox overlying paradox. Its subtlety is a promise and a fascination. Many of the principles of Tai Chi Chuan are similar to those of the Alexander Technique, discovered by F.M. Alexander over 100 years ago. If the principles of each were the same, there would, of course, be no reason to study both of them. What is perhaps the primary difference between them is the way in which the Alexander work individually brings students’ attention to their habitual ways of using themselves, and teaches a process by which any activity can be approached with conscious awareness of those habits and the alternatives. Tai Chi presents its practitioners with fascinating challenges in movement and attention, challenges that ask us to fundamentally change our habitual way of being. The Alexander work is a very powerful tool helping us to make those changes. The Alexander work may even be more Taoist than Tai Chi. It has no form, no exercises to do, not even a set, prescribed process. As my teacher, Marjorie Barstow liked to say, "It’s just a little bit of nothing." However that "nothing" is a clarity of attention that allows you to make profound changes in the way you interact with the world - in how you do what you do, even in what you perceive.

The health and relaxation aspects of tai chi, by author and practitioner of oriental medicine, Robert Parry. tai chi for health and relaxation.

TAI CHI for health and relaxation
Tai Chi is an exercise system that combines slow, graceful movement with calm, regular breathing. It has many styles and uses in the world today - becoming very popular as a means of maintaining good health and feelings of relaxation and calm. These are the aspects of tai chi which you will find presented here - along with tai chi's associations with oriental medicine and the philosophy of Taoism. The aim of tai chi is to cultivate and circulate the body's vital energy - chi (or Qi) and so, ultimately, to strengthen our state of health. In tai chi the arms move in a relaxed, circular fashion. Steps are taken very slowly, or else the feet remain firmly rooted to the ground - the weight shifting gently from one side to the other as you go. Breathing is centred in the abdomen, and the movements are natural - like a floating cloud or running stream. The author of this page is Robert Parry, who is a writer, practitioner of oriental medicine and a long-time student of Eastern systems of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and chi kung. Tai Chi for Health About Tai Chi Classes Join Links ... Contact us What is Tai Chi? Tai Chi Ch'uan is an ancient form of slow, graceful and rhythmic exercise which originated in China, where it is still extremely popular, often being performed in public parks early in the morning when the air is at its freshest. The style taught here is the Yang style Short Form as developed by Professor Ch'eng Man Ch'ing, currently the most popular form of Tai Chi in the U.K. Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as 'meditation in movement' or 'swimming in air' for externally that is how it appears. It is a soft martial art, quite unlike karate, ju jitsu or any of the 'hard' martial arts which rely on force and speed. Tai Chi strengthens our internal energy, and allows it to flow more freely through the body. It is gentle and non-violent, though after much practice it is an extremely effective form of self defence. About the tutors Paul Tucker is a Registered Instructor with the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain, and author of "Tai Chi" (Lorenz, 1997), which has now sold over 100,000 copies. He began studying Tai Chi in 1982 and became an Adult Education Institute Tutor in 1987.
