Is Tai Chi the Ultimate Exercise? Health First, Self-Defense Second! Two Techniques of Pushing Hands.
Is Tai Chi the Ultimate Exercise?
by Frank Petrillo Jr. No one disputes the importance of regular exercise. Unfortunately, there are so many fitness programs available today, the general public is often confused as to which are the best. Consequently, they are the willing guinea pigs of every fitness fad that comes along. The Chinese have always maintained that inactivity is the major cause of illness. Thus, they have developed numerous systems of medical gymnastics both to cure as well as prevent disease. Of the many exercises they have devised, they consider the martial art tai chi chuan to be the best. Advantages of Tai Chi Tai chi chuan has many distinct advantages over other types of exercise. The biggest shortcoming of most systems of physical fitness is that they service only part of the body. They concentrate on certain muscles or muscle groups, while neglecting others entirely. For example, isometric exercises tense one set of muscles against another set or an immovable object. Because this is a one-dimensional exercise, the benefits are minimal.

Chinese Qi energetics, such as Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Qigong and Feng Shui, have always been my passion and a way of life since my childhood days. I have avoided making a living out of teaching full time in order to maintain some degree of freedom and independence. I am interested in preserving Chinese culture and making it useful so it can survive into and through the New Millennium. I am keen to share my experience with others. A History of Tai Chi Chuan
More than 300 different known martial arts styles are practiced in China. There are two Chinese Martial Art systems, the internal and the external systems. The internal system includes Tai Chi, Sheng-I and Pa-Qua styles. The emphasize stability and have limited jumps and kicks. The external system includes Shao Lin, Long Fist, Southern Fist, and other styles. They emphasize linear movements, breathing combined with sound, strength, speed and hard power impact contact, jumps, and kicks. There are many different styles or families of Tai Chi Chuan. The five which are practiced most commonly today are the Yang Chen Wu Sun , and Woo styles. All Tai Chi styles, however, are derived from the original Chen family style. Some people believe that Tai Chi was developed by a Taoist Priest from a temple in China's Wu Dong Mountains. It is said that he once observed a white crane preying on a snake, and mimiced their movements to create the unique Tai Chi martial art style. Initially, Tai Chi was practiced as a fighting form, emphasizing strength, balance, flexibility, and speed. Through time it has evolved into a soft, slow, and gentle form of exercise which can be practiced by people of all ages.

The Heritage Of Tai Chi by Chia Siew Pang
Yang Lu-ch'an was a pugilistic enthusiast. He studied the 'hard' schools of martial art from many tutors. One day, he had a heated discussion with a Chen and was beaten up for his pains. Yang was very frustrated as he realized his skill in martial art was very inferior to Chen's. He requested a return bout. During the interim he practiced assiduously. In the return bout, he was again handled like a babe and thrashed so soundly by Chen that he forswore the practice of all other forms of martial art. He was determined to learn Chen's system. The ruse worked. Yang gained entry and was eventually employed as a servant in the grandmaster's household. He soon became a trusted servant and was given access to the inner courtyards of the family household. Here he spied on the Chen family as they practiced. Religiously, he copied their moves and practiced them in secret. He was able to benefit from this activity as he already had a good grounding in the martial art.

Sii vuoto e sarai riempito

T ai Chi Chuan, or taijiquan,is an ancient Chinese form of co-ordinated body movements focusing on the cultivation of internal energy 'chi' or 'qi'. Its aim is to harmonise the mind, body and spirit, promoting both mental and physical well-being through softness and relaxation. When practised correctly the movements (or Form) of tai chi appear rhythmical, effortless and in continuous flow. W ith the practice of taichi the student becomes revitalised, relaxed, tolerant, self-confident and stronger and healthier in both mind and body. Unlike most forms of exercise and sport, tai-chi does not rely on strength, force and speed, making it ideal for people of both sexes, young and old alike whether strong or weak. It is this approach that makes t'ai chi such a unique art, and one that brings benefits in many areas.
E T hrough its long history, there are many reports of improvements and even cure of some medical conditions e.g. hypertension, gastric disturbances, heart and musculoskeletal disorders. Indeed the lack of reliance on tension and speed makes it uniquely applicable to anyone suffering from such disorders. See also a
