Prior to the invention of Tae Kwon Do by the late General Choi, there were several loosely connected Korean systems, Mu Do Kwan, Chung do Kwan etc etc. Each of these systems had some traditional Korean MA content, but each was also influenced by Shotokan Karate. ABOUT HWARANG-DO One of the oldest Korean arts of combat. Hwarangdo means "the way of the flower of manhood," since it was originally taught in a youth organization. Originating almost 2,000 years ago, it is the Korean martial art from which many others stem. It was founded by a Buddhist monk, Bopsa Won Kwang, to educate aristocratic youths in martial arts and philosophy. These young adults were called "Hwarang" and in the Silla Dynasty they developed a reputation as the most feared warriors. Practitioners of Hwarang-do were expected to develop several principle qualities common to all martial artists: loyalty, courage and fairness. Like most "do" arts, Hwarang-do relies on the concept of yin-yang, or umyang as it is called in Korea, for it focuses on the spiritual and personal growth of the individual, balanced by development of the mind and body. Eventually the power of the Hwarang dissipated. The art was driven underground during the Yi Dynasty, where it remained for many years. In 1960, two brothers who had been students of Hwarang-do for many years opened the first modern public school. The art has spread to other countries, where it is often taught in combination with Tae Kwon Do. WHAT IS TANG SOO DO The very first evidence of this ancient form of Korean martial arts appeared during the Three Kingdom era (57 BC-935 AD) as Hwa Rang Do. Since then, 2,000 years have passed. The indigenous martial arts quietly developed through generations of the Korean people. During some eras it flourished and other times it diminished, according to the political, economic or cultural environment. The art was known by various names throughout the eras as Hwa Rang Do, Moo Sul, Kyuck Too Ki, Soo Bahk Ki, Soo Byuck Ki, Taek Kyun etc. respectively. Following 1945 Korean independence, the Korean martial arts were again merged and flourished throughout the entire Korean Peninsula. Many organizations were founded with various names such as Soo Bahk Do, Tang Soo Do, Tae Soo Do and so on. At the beginning of the modern era of the Korean martial arts, Tang Soo Do was the most popular term for these arts, however, at that time, the Korean political leader was concerned about establishing Korean value based on Korean nationalism. (se under Hwa Rang Do:) Uniform: Da Hwa Rang krigerne var af den adelige klasse, adskiller deres uniform/dragt sig naturligvis også, fra den almene befolknings. Det gør den stadig, den dag i dag. Hwa Rang Do`s uniform består af; hvid overdel med sort, rød eller hvid krave, sorte bukser, sort vest med gul/guld stribe (Dopo) og skærf (Sash) og sorte ærme holder (Tosiser) og ikke den almindelige sorte eller hvide dragt med bælte. (Den traditionel, klassiske bondedragt) i mestergræder 5 Dan. og op efter, skifter Hwa rang do uniformen/dragten farve til helt blå, rød og sort. (se under Fotogalleri/Dan pensum:) Militært system: Hwa Rang Do er skabt som et militært system, beregnet til kamp på slagmarkerne, ikke som kampsport eller konkurrencekampe. Af samme grund er der ikke kampstævner/turneringer i Hwa Rang Do. Hvis man skulle sidestille det med noget eksempel; så forstil dig, at man laver et stævne for jæger soldater, der skal kæmpe mod hinanden, den sidste mand der står op har vundet. Nej man bliver selvfølgelig nødt til at lave regler pga. sikkerhed, da det er et stævne og ikke kamp på slagmarken. Når man laver regler tager man noget af essensen af stilarten/jægersoldatens uddannelse, og individets personlige stil og måde at eliminere en modstanderen på. Så derfor er der ikke stævner i HRD.
