I: Introduction
Any student of Tae Kwon Do deserves to learn about the significance of the art. To miss out on learning such a matter is a grave injustice. Tae Kwon Do's history deserves to be cherished and dignified, especially among its practitioners. The essence of Tae Kwon Do's history seeps into our minds every time we tie our belts or practice our forms. How well do you know your art?
II: The Birth of Tae Kwon Do
Man has been endowed with the natural impulse to survive dangerous situations, using whatever tools are available. If caught in such a situation, man could possibly wield a weapon to defend himself, but weapons are not always available. Therefore, man needs to learn how to use his own body as a weapon. Thus opens the history books on the martial arts.
Tae Kwon Do has endured a dramatic history, beginning with the three rival dynasties in early Korea: Koguryo, Silla, and Baekjae. Koguryo Tae Kwon Do began in present day Korea, during the Koguryo Dynasty (37 BC - 668 AD). The earliest evidence of Tae Kwon Do is found in warriors’ tombs dating as far back to the year 3 AD. Murals painted on the walls of the tombs depict men engaged in Subakki fighting. This combat was different from the type of Tae Kwon Do that is practiced today, however. Tae Kwon Do has evolved over the years, becoming more scientifically systemized through each generation.

Wrong Move? Experts Say New Tae Kwon Do Rules May Be Harmful to Kids
April 24
Click Here During competitions, 12- and 13-year-old black belts will now be awarded points for knocking down their opponents with a kick to the head. Children in that age group used to be penalized for the exact same blow, but the new guidelines could change the way all children train. Three congressmen, including Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who is himself a black belt, expressed outrage in a letter to the United States Olympic Committee, which governs Tae Kwon Do. The martial art is practiced by more than 6 million Americans. "It's one thing to score a point, it's another thing to disable, where the goal is to disable a young person from participating in the sport, and quite possibly disable them from participating in any other activity for the rest of their life," said Jackson, a Democrat from Chicago. Risk of Concussions Although most tournaments require protective gear, including a padded helmet, Dr. Jordan Metzl, director of the Hospital for Special Surgery's Institute for Young Athletes in New York, warns that the new rules increase the risk of concussions.

Martial arts instruction and practice is in its third decade of history at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH Tae Kwon Do Club and the NIH Judo Club had their origins in the fall of 1978. Dr. Thomas E. Malone and Dr. W. French Anderson developed the concept for a combined Judo and Karate introductory course and announced the meeting of the charter class in the December 12, 1978 NIH Recreation and Welfare Association "Smoke Signals". The course was planned as a service to the NIH staff and to the neighboring communities. Seventy-eight people arrived for the first session, and as a result of this large evidence of interest, the two separate clubs, Judo and Tae Kwon Do were created. The Clubs have operated since their inception as members of the NIH Recreation and Welfare Association. They have close affiliation with each other, reflecting their common origin. The NIH Tae Kwon Do Club was an independent school for the first 4 years of its existence. During this time it practiced the Chung Do Kwon style of Tae Kwon Do. The Club became a branch school of the Dong Ya Yang Tae Kwon Do and Judo Institute in 1982. As a branch school, the Club was under the overall guidance of Professor Yang, Tae Kwon Do Grandmaster (8th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and 7th degree blackbelt in Judo). At this juncture in its history, the Club expanded its style of practice to encompass Kukkiwon Tae Kwon Do, and became a member of the Maryland Chapter of the United States Tae Kwon Do Union and affiliated with the World Tae Kwon Do Federation.
