Born on 20 December 1925 in Alor Setar, Kedah, the young Mahathir joined the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) at its foundation in 1946, and courted attention by writing provocative articles on the monarchy and the emancipation of women. He qualified in medicine at the University of Malaya, then located in Singapore, and has always preferred Dr. to honorifics - such as Tan Sri Datuk - that precede many Malaysian names. He set up private practice in his home town in 1957, a year after he married his wife, Hamsah, also a physician. They have two daughters and three sons. Road to power Dr Mahathir entered active politics in 1964 as a Member of Parliament for UMNO. He lost his seat in 1969 and was expelled from the party after attacking the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, in an open letter, for neglecting the indigenous Malay community. His website address is http://www.danielpipes.org The current insurrection in Iraq was discernable a year ago, as I already noted in April 2003: "Thousands of Iraqi Shiites chanted "‘No to America, No to Saddam, Yes to Islam" a few days ago, during pilgrimage rites at the holy city of Karbala. Increasing numbers of Iraqis appear to agree with these sentiments. They have ominous implications for the coalition forces." The recent wave of violence makes those implications fully apparent. Two factors in particular made me expect Iraqi resistance. First, the quick war of 2003 focused on overturning a hated tyrant so that, when it was over, Iraqis felt liberated, not defeated. Accordingly, the common assumption that Iraq resembled the Germany and Japan of 1945 was wrong. Those two countries had been destroyed through years of all-out carnage, leading them to acquiesce to the post-war overhaul of their societies and cultures. Iraq, in contrast, emerged almost without damage from brief hostilities and Iraqis do not feel they must accept guidance from the occupation forces. Rather, they immediately showed a determination to shape their country's future. Second, as a predominantly Muslim people, Iraqis share in the powerful Muslim reluctance to being ruled by non-Muslims. This reluctance results from the very nature of Islam, the most public and political of religions.

Further, I predict Iraqis will prevail, and I do so on the basis of two presumptions: Iraqis don't want Americans to rule them; and Iraqis care much more about the future of their country than do Americans. For the sake of argument, let's assume my reasoning is correct, the American government abandons its goal of "a free and peaceful Iraq," and coalition forces prepare to leave Iraq on less-than-optimal terms. What would then be the least-bad outcome? Having the central government control the entire country and patrol its borders, contain radical ideologies and ethnic tensions, and not attack neighbors. Further, it would ensure reasonable freedoms, permit the economy and culture to develop, dispatch oil and gas to the outside world, and move toward increased political participation. Fine, but how to achieve this?

How can I build pure strength fast? A: Step up to the platform lift. It's a shortened version of the squat that increases the strength of your legs and back—the key to lifting heavy weights of any kind. Here's how to do it: Set the safety rails of a squat rack 12 inches below the lockout position of your squat. Step under the bar so it rests on your upper back and grasp it with an overhand grip (as narrow as your flexibility allows), your feet set shoulder-width apart. Take a deep breath and hold it, then drive your feet into the floor, lift your chin toward the ceiling, and push yourself up until your knees lock out. Breathe again as you lower the weight back to the safety bars under control. That's one rep. Do one set of three reps with 50% of your squat max, one set of two reps with 75%, and four sets of one rep with 100%. Rest two minutes between each set. You can go heavier than your squat max, but proceed with caution: Blood vessels burst and spit flies when you try to reach your limits. But that's the fun part.
