A strongman is a political leader who rules by force and runs a authoritarian regime. The term is often used interchangeably with " dictator A strongman is not necessarily always a formal Head of State , however. Sometimes the term is used to describe a military or political figure who exercises far more influence over the government than is constitutionally allowed. General Manuel Noriega , for example, was often dubbed the "Strongman of Panama" for the enormous amount of political power he exercised over Panama , despite the fact that he was not the formal president of the nation. The term strongman is also used to refer to a 19th century exhibitor of strength (before strength sports were codified into weightlifting powerlifting etc., becoming actual athletic competitions) or circus performers of similar ilk who displayed strength feats such as the bent press, supporting large amounts of weight held overhead at arm's length, steel bending, chain breaking, etc. Large amounts of wrist, hand, and tendon strength were required for these feats, as well as prodigious oblique strength. Some famous strongmen: Louis Cyr George Hackenschmidt Eugen Sandow The term is also used to describe a more modern eclectic strength competition in which competitors lift rocks, tote refrigerators, pull trains, walk while towing an eighteen wheel truck behind them, etc. There is no set rule about what kinds of events will occur, although some, like the Farmer's Walk (in which competitors carry heavy suitcase like weights) recur every year. The most famous competition of this type is "World's Strongest Man", however NASA (not the space agency) holds amateur and other meets throughout America.

T he following is a list of some of the most common events seen in strongman competitions these days: Farmer's Walk -2 cylinder-like implements are carried, one in each hand, a given distance or through a certain course. Weights per cylinder range from 180-330lbs per hand. Car Walk - This is usually seen in larger events like the World's Strongest Man (WSM) seen on ESPN/ESPN2. The competitor is strapped into the inside of an old car. The floor board, engine and seats are generally removed from this car (basically a car shell) and the competitor must stand and walk with the weight bearing on their shoulders. While the car's parts have been limited, the weight can be over 800lbs. Loading Events - These vary depending on the competition's promoter. It usually entails carrying 4-6 objects differing in size and weight from one place to another. In the past, they used to call it the keg loading, as it involved loading 5+ kegs into the back of a truck. Object used can be rocks, stones, chains, logs, fire hydrants, kegs, blocks of metal or stone, well you get the picture. Log Press -There are two variations seen in the log press. The first, is when the athlete must clean and press the log overhead as many times as possible in a given time period. The weight can be between 185-305lbs for as many reps as possible. The second variation could be doing as much weight as possible for a single rep. Like a powerlifting meet, each athlete is given 3-5 attempts to do as much weight as possible. The log is usually lifted from the ground/floor to the chest (cleaned) and then pressed over head to a lockout position with knees and elbows locked.

M any of us have flipped to the sports channel at some odd hour and caught a glimpse of a huge man carrying a rock, log or barrel like it was nothing. These men always seem to be named "Magnus" and usually have huge arms and a great European accent. However, the sport of Strongman has been growing rapidly in the United States over the past few years. After reading some of my other articles , you are now more familiar with the different events and competitions I’ve done in the past. However none of them compare to the Northeast Strongman Showdown I competed in on February 16th of 2002. The events were fast and heavy, the competitors were top notch, and feats of strength occurred that would make the strongest feel weak. T his competition, the Northeast Strongman Showdown (or NESS) was made up of a professional class, an amateur light and heavyweight class as well as a women’s class. There were around 120 total competitors and Saturday started with the lightweight men. Saturday was the qualifying day, and the top 10 athletes from the amateurs and pros qualified for the finals, held on Day 2. The women competed in all their events during the evening of Day 1. For the pro and amateur men, the event order went like this: Event 1 - Farmer Carry.

Further, I predict Iraqis will prevail, and I do so on the basis of two presumptions: Iraqis don't want Americans to rule them, and Iraqis care much more about the future of their country than do Americans. For the sake of argument, let's assume my reasoning is correct, the U.S. government abandons its goal of ''a free and peaceful Iraq,'' and coalition forces prepare to leave Iraq on less-than-optimal terms. What would then be the least-bad outcome? Having the central government control the entire country and patrol its borders, contain radical ideologies and ethnic tensions, and not attack neighbors. Further, it would ensure reasonable freedoms, permit the economy and culture to develop, dispatch oil and gas to the outside world, and move toward increased political participation. Fine, but how to achieve this?

He has superhuman strength, although how he developed this is unexplained (at least in the stories I have). Powers/Abilities : The "strongest man in Britain." His strength is sufficient to smash through a solid stone wall. He is also armed with a "gravity gun" which makes anything it hits become incredibly heavy. Comments : Strongman is very politically incorrect from the samples of the strip I have - in the space of four pages he manages to refer to Japanese opponents as "nasty little Nip's", "banana face", "rice-eating war lovers" and "lemon faced scum".
