The Lost Rear-Engine Sprint Cars!
Please read while the pictures load below In the 50's and 60's USAC ran a variety of open-wheel race cars on paved and dirt tracks. A major common denominator among the cars was that the chassis held the engine in front of the driver who often sat upright above (or beside) the drivetrain. This front-engined commonality in the cars was helpful to short track drivers, who frequently raced in the Indy 500. By 1967 the cars racing on the paved speedways were quickly evolving into the modern cars we know today with the engine placed behind the driver, ahead of the rear axle. A few years earlier this configuration had been given momentum at Indy by respected F1 figures Jack Brabham and Colin Chapman and was based on the formula cars they already raced in Europe. By placing the engine this way, it not only offered a better weight balance, but also a lower center-of-gravity and a better aero profile (because the driver didn't need to sit atop the drivetrain). This new type of car was hugely successful, and made the front-engined cars obsolete on the speedways in only about 3 years! During this time however, the cars on the dirt tracks retained their upright front-engine configuration. About 1972, inspired by their speedway brethren, some rear-engine sprint cars were built. USAC magazine heralded this as the "rear engine revolution" hitting sprint car racing. On dirt, they were moderately competitive, but on the paved tracks they usually beat the conventional front-engine cars. Tom Sneva had a number of wins in a RE sprint car owned by Carl Gehlhausen.

(May 24, 2004) – Defending American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region champion Kevin Ramey hopes to parlay a home track advantage into a victory as the competitive series takes to the high-banked quarter-mile Cowtown Speedway clay oval in Kennedale, TX, this Saturday night.
With his shop located just a few short miles from Cowtown Speedway, Ramey is familiar with the route to Cowtown Speedway’s victory lane, often taking part in weekly action on idle weekend’s for the ASCS Sooner Region.
After posting five triumphs en route to the 2003 series title, Ramey has been shut out of victory lane through the first five events this year. Ramey has managed top-ten finishes in all five features however, and enters Saturday’s showdown ranked third in points, just 16 markers behind current point leader Jason Martin.
Oklahoma City’s Andy Shouse, who collected his first ASCS triumph in the recent challenge versus the NCRA at Wichita’s 81 Speedway, is second in points entering Saturday night, just eight markers ahead of Ramey. Shouse has equaled Ramey by posting top-ten runs in five events contested thus far in 2004.

Sprintcar Association of Victoria Welcome to the exciting world of Sprintcar Racing.Sprintcars are regarded as the highest and most competitive class of speedway. They offer a thrill a minute because of their closeness and aggressive racing not found in other forms of motor racing. Sprintcar History Sprintcar Racing began in the USA in the early twenties when the "T" and "A" model ford engines were the power plants of the era.The thirties and forties saw the rise of the specially built engines like the famous Offenhauser. The most significant impact on sprintcar racing was in 1956 when Chevrolet introduced the now famous V8 small block engine. With the availability of after market high performance engine components, the small block Chevrolet engine became the standard power plant for most sprintcars and has remained so since the early sixties.

I originally developed this auto racing site as a tribute to my father, Joe Giusti, and auto racing nostalgia. From 1930 to 1970 auto racing enjoyed an unsurpassed following. Before the big wings, expensive right rear tires (RR) and $30,000 engines, all that were required to race was a little know-how, a garage and commitment to race at the local bull ring. Those are the racing times and people depicted within Turn 4. Enjoy the racing stories in Liar's Corner, antiquated newspaper articles in 50's News and photos in my Gallery. You will find my e-mail address on many pages within Turn 4 to which you can send me your old newspaper articles, stories or anecdotes and vintage photos from auto racings past. Things are moving quickly these days with several additions and more promised for the near future. Keep checking back frequently All comments; critique and, especially praise, are welcome

Managed for the U.S. Department of Energy by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Background
The U.S. Department of Energy's National Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) Program is a classroom-based, hands-on educational program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. JSS student teams apply math, science, and creativity to construct model solar-powered cars and race them in interscholastic competitions hosted within their schools or within their states or regions. JSS began in 1990 as a single demonstration race and expanded to 10 regional competitions in 1991. The program now uses public and private sector support to improve education in middle/junior high schools across the nation. In recent years, the event grew to 83 host sites in 26 states involving 100,000 students and 15,000 teachers. Goals
The primary goals of the JSS program are to:
  • generate enthusiasm for science and engineering at a crucial stage in the educational development of young people.
  • improve students' understanding of scientific concepts and renewable energy technologies; and
