Ice Skating in Montana
Skating Safety Rinks in Montana Skating Safety Skating is a rare sport that combines grace and beauty with fun and exercise. In Montana, you'll find plenty of places to go ice skating, including indoor rinks, outdoor rinks, ponds, lakes and streams. However, before you lace up those skates and do your best Michelle Kwan or Scott Davis (who is from Montana, by the way), please follow these simple rules.
  • First things first: if you're a beginner, learn how to stop and fall safely before you venture onto the ice. As you're starting out, both of those skills will be extra important.
  • Make sure your skates fit comfortably (not too tight, not too loose) and support your ankles.
  • Don't be dullhave a professional sharpen your skate blades every year.
  • If you are skating at a maintained rink, please obey all the rules and regulations for your own safety.
  • If you are skating on lakes, ponds and streams, be extra careful. First, remember that the ice isn't going to be glassy smooth; there aren't any Zambonis smoothing over lakes. Watch for cracks, holes, debris or colored ice that may indicate dangerous conditions.
  • Wear warm clothing. After all, you're skating on ice. If you get cold or tired, stop and rest; otherwise your chances for an accident increase dramatically.

Speed Skating in Montana
Speed Skating History Speed Skating in Big Sky Country Speed Skating History Speed skating was the first of the three forms of skating to develop into a sport. (The three forms of skating are speed skating, figure skating and hockey.) As early as 1500, the Dutch were especially famous for putting blades to ice in a race. In the 18th century, speed skating's popularity spread across Europe, and organized races began for English aristocrats. By the late 1800s, steel skates had revolutionized the sport, and modern competitions were born. The Dutch again led the pack by creating the double track, as well as the competition format still essentially in use today for all long track races. With the advent of the Winter Olympics, speed skating's popularity continued to grow. In fact, speed skating has produced more medals than any other Olympic event. Many of the Olympics' most famous names, including Bonnie Blair, Eric Heiden and Olav Koss, are speed skaters. Speed Skating in Big Sky Country Montana has its own speed skating history, starting with our current Governor Judy Martz. She is a fourth generation Montanan who has lived most of her life in the Butte area. In 1963, Judy Martz became a member of the U.S. World Speed Skating Team; in 1964, she represented the United States at the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Her Olympic successand her love of speed skatingwould stay with her. Years later, she played a key role in opening the

30-Second History
  • Speed skating, like figure skating, grew out of the development of the ice skate. When the iron blade replaced the wood or bone runner, skating became a winter pastime in northern European countries. Long track speed skating was introduced at the first-ever Olympic Winter Games in 1924, but short track speed skating was not added until 1992. The klap skate, which featured a front hinge and allowed the athlete to lift his/her heel off the back of the blade, gave athletes much shorter times.
Timeline
~300 AD The first ice skates were created in northern Europe. They were used for transportation and made from wood, bone or antlers. Wood runners gave way to iron blades for skates. The first steel blades were created for skates, which allowed for an edge that did not need to resharpened as much as the iron blade. The first official speed skating World Championships were held in The Netherlands. The International Skating United was founded to govern the growing sport of skating, including speed skating and figure skating, in the world. Short track speed skating gained interest in North America with the first organized competitions.

Speed Skating
Although archeologists in Scandinavia have relics that demonstrate primitive people glided over the ice using skates fashioned from animal bone and straps of leather, it was in the Netherlands that skating became a mode of transportation and national passion. Using the frozen canals for the track, speed skating became a winter past time and quickly gained in popularity across Europe. The first known skating competition is thought to have been a 15-meter race and took place in England on February 4, 1763.

Competition
Speed skating has been part of the Olympics since the first Winter Games in 1924. At first, only men raced, but in 1960, four women's speed skating events were held at the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley. The women's 5000 meter event was added to the Olympic program in Calgary in 1988, completing the 10 events that will be currently raced in Salt Lake City: 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m. Each race (for both men and women) has a slightly different rule for winning. The 2002 Speed Skating events will be held in the 6,000 seat Utah Olympic Oval which is the world's highest-altitude indoor skating oval

All Ages, All Skill Levels The long and short of it is...ice speedskating is a sport for all ages and skill levels, from the beginning novice through Olympic and world class speedskaters. Whether you choose entry level skating, are looking for a recreational experience or a viable cross training alternative, or want a chance at the Olympic rings, speedskating offers unique developmental opportunities for athletic involvement and success. The world's fastest self-propelled sport, speedskating is regulated by U. S. Speedskating. Primarily a volunteer-driven organization, this national governing body promotes the grassroots development of speedskating in cooperation with 19 state associations and some 100 local clubs throughout the United States. From New York to Florida to California, from Hawaii to Alaska, the clubs provide practice times, training and coaching and positive support for skaters of all levels, including skaters with special needs. The local club system provides an excellent opportunity for family involvement. In fact, speedskating is known as a family sport, a time to learn about common interests and contribute to child's positive athletic experience.

Speed skating
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Speed skating is a form of ice skating Ice skating is travelling on ice with skates, narrow blade-like devices moulded into special boots (or, more primitively, without boots, tied to regular footwear). It is mainly done for recreation and as a sport. It is possible on canals and lakes, etc. after it has been freezing for some time, and at indoor and outdoor skating tracks and areas with artificial cooling. In some countries with a temperate climate, e.g. the Netherlands, frozen canals and lakes are fairly rare, but skating is popular where these are encountered.

Related sports are short track speed skating Short track speed skating is a form of ice skating akin to speed skating. In competitions, a number of skaters (typically 4 to 6) skate simultaneously on a short indoor ice track (111 m). The sport is held at the Olympic Winter Games.
History
The sport of short track speed skating originates in the speed skating events held with mass starts. This form of speed skating was mainly practised in the United States and Canada, as opposed to the international form, where skaters skated in pairs. At the 1932 Olympic Winter Games, speed skating events were conducted in mass start form. Competitions in North America were also held indoors, for example in Madison Square Garden, New York, and therefore on shorter tracks than was usual for outdoor skating.

The first complete guide to speed skating on ice and in-line skates to examine skating techniques in detail for both forms, "Speed on Skates" also includes drills for improving technique, and routines for building strength, speed, flexibility, and stamina.. Reviews Reader review - Tom Waltz "Speed on Skates" is the greatest skating resource I've ever imagined. For years, we all lived on Dianne Holum's book and FaSST articles for technique and training tips. Now, we have one great resource for skate knowledge. Without going too deep for non-kinesiologists, Barry explains how and why everything we do works. He manages to show in photographs the basic components that we all need to learn and perfect to be great skaters. The drills for improving technique range from simple to genius. The book will warrant many, many re-reads to learn and understand more each time. It was so well worth the wait that we all went through. Tony Muse - 18 time World Speedskating Champion "Barry Publow has been at the forefront in dissecting and teaching skating skills. All skaters can benefit from reading this book - either by improving their times, or by having a higher comfort level on their skates".

If the sentence above has "true color" on the next line by itself , your desktop (or "Screen Area") is set at 640x480. See notes below for a better explanation of this. *Desktop Settings : Many older websites are set for a 640x480 "desktop. This 640 wide setting is possibly best for small monitors, which many people still use. If your desktop (or screen area) is set at 640x480, many things on either of the websites here will have a strange (although still functional) appearance, like a word in a sentence all alone on one line, as your browser wraps the content to fit your 640 wide window. If your desktop (or screen area) is already set for 600x800, then you have see many websites that do not fill your screen. This is normal.
