The National Capital Short Track Club It's not all hockey and figure skating! There is a thriving speedskating club right here at The Gardens Ice House: the National Capital Short Track Speedskating Club . Come join us! Speedskating is one of the world's oldest winter sports, and it is the sport in which the United States has enjoyed the most Winter Olympic success. There are two types of speedskating: long track and short track. Long track races are skated on a 400 meter oval against the clock, while short track racing takes place on a 111 meter track against live competition. Short track features racing strategy, pack skating skills and occasional bumps and spills in addition to raw speed. The National Capital Club is home to accomplished competitive skaters of all ages. But in addition to training competitive skaters, our club offers opportunities for novice and beginner skaters of all ages to learn from experienced coaches in an atmosphere of fun and good sportsmanship. We also host and participate in regular local and regional competitions for all ages. Speedskating provides an excellent aerobic workout. It also provides a positive sports experience for kids of all ages and their families. In our club, kids and their parents can skate, train and compete together. For families who love to skate, speedskating offers a chance for parents and children to enjoy a competitive sport without the pressure of figure skating or roughness of hockey - and at an overall lower cost than either one!

Ice Speed Skating in Queensland
Reporter: Michael Lund Monday, 21 January 2002 Who would have thought Queensland would play host to one of the coldest sports? But the Winter Olympic speed ice skating have been training hard in Brisbane and are hopeful of success in this years games at Salt Lake City, in the US. While many of us have been suffering in the hot summer heat of late, some lucky fellows have been escaping the baking temperatures and crippling humidity. They’ve been seeking refuge in one of Brisbane’s ice rinks but not just for fun, for the city is home to one of Australia’s Winter Olympic hopefuls, the speed ice skating team.

SPEED SKATING: Sport becomes 'formula one on ice'
NAGANO (Feb 10, 1998 - 05:41 EST) - High-tech suits and brand new skates have dramatically changed the image of speed skating, turning one of the most traditional of winter sports into what one prominent coach describes as "Formula One on ice." With the eyes of the world upon him, Dutchman Gianni Romme showed what technology can do by slicing more than eight seconds from his previous world record in Sunday's opening race, the men's 5,000 metres. Romme's talent, of course, merited heaps of praise but what everybody was talking about was the hinged slap skates he was wearing and, in particular, the aerodynamic rubber strips stuck on his skin suit. The strips, which reduce air turbulence, were developed after secret studies at the university of the Dutch city of Delft. They illustrate the growing importance of technical innovations in speed skating. "It's Formula One on ice," said Dutch coach Wopke de Vegt. Canadian coach Robert Tremblay said the thin zig-zagging strips attached to each shin and over the forehead of the leading Dutch skaters were not the main reason for Romme's sensational performance.

clap skate
Allowed only in long track racing, the clap skate has a blade that detaches at the heel, which allows the full length of the blade to remain on the ice for a much longer period of time, increasing speed. When the skate is lifted from the ice, the blade is snapped back into its original position by a spring-loaded hinge located under the ball of the foot. That produces a distinctive clapping sound that gives the skates their name. Also klap skates, often spelled as one word.

The Friends of Fort Dupont oversees a growing community skating program which serves over 5,000 neighborhood boys and girls annually. Officially called Kids On Ice , the program has grown to include elementary and advanced figure skating, instructional ice hockey and, most recently, speed skating. Additionally, Kids On Ice offers free skating opportunities to students at more than a dozen District of Columbia elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Students range from 5 to 18 years of age. Kids On Ice participants receive admission to sessions held during school days, weekday evenings and weekends. Skates are provided, as is hockey and speed skating equipment for those enrolled in those programs. Instructors include qualified volunteers under the direction of professional figure skating, ice hockey and speed skating directors. Many area skaters – including local high school ice hockey players – serve as volunteer assistant instructors. All sessions are 10-weeks and conclude with a skating exhibition.
