History
  • origins in a.o. Netherlands founding of ISU (IEV) development of the competitions
Speed skating is a Winter Olympic Games medal sport. The sport was revolutionized in the 1990s with the introduction of clap skates , allowing competitors to reach speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour.
Rules
Speed skating is currently conducted on ovals with artificial ice. The length of the track for the major competitions is 400 m, but tracks of 333 m or 200 m are also in use. All races are held in pairs, for which two lanes on the track are used. At the back straight, the skaters switch lanes which causes them both to cover the same distance per lap.

Competition Format
Single distances
The most basic form of speed skating consists of skating a single event. This is the format used for the World Single Distance Championships and the World Cup. Usual distance include the 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, 3000 m (women only), 5000 m and 10000 m (men only), but several other distances are sometimes skated. For championships, the 500 m and the 1000 m are currently conducted in two runs, with the final ranking based on accumulated times.

SPEED SKATING
Track Stars on Ice

Speed skating began as a means of transportation, became popular as a game for Dutch children and finally evolved into a sporting event of strength, rhythm and science. Speed skating athletes whip around a 400-meter course, swinging their arms for power and leaning 45 to 50 degrees around curves. Innovations such as the "klap skate" using a hinged blade continue to produce faster and faster speeds. Evolution of the Ice Skate
Ancient people who lived in northern climates learned to adapt to a land of ice and snow. In Scandinavia, primitive man used ice skates while hunting wild animals across the fjords and icy terrain. The skates were constructed of elk, horse or reindeer bone . They were then connected to a boot with leather straps. In the fourteenth century, waxed wood was used instead of bone for the blade of the skate. Since there were no edges on either bone or wooden blades, a long pole was required to direct the skater across the ice. The first mention of a metal runner on a skate may be traced to Holland around the year 1400. Holland was a major trading center and ice skates allowed goods to be moved quickly over frozen canals. Improvements continued as all- iron skates appeared in Scotland around 1572. In 1850, the first all-

    55. Ice Skating's Hinge Technology
speed skaters keep their ankles locked and push off their heels, because pushingoff their toes would cause the blade tip to dig into the ice and slow them down
    http://popularmechanics.com/outdoors/outdoors/1998/2/Ice_Skating_Hinge/print.pht
HINGE BENEFITS BY JIM GORANT The clap skate allows a longer stride. At this year's Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, speed skating will be a truly international competition. But the contest might be more technological than athletic. A new kind of skate is changing everything about the sport, from the way it's performed, to the standards of excellence, to the way it sounds. But the skates are so new and the manufacturers so overwhelmed that all skaters may not have access to the equipment. Some traditionalists wish no one did. The new skates, known alternately as clap skates or slap skates, have a spring-loaded hinge on the toe that allows the heel to pull away from the blade at the end of the stride. This motion keeps the blade in contact with the ice longer and delivers more power per stride. As the blade snaps back into place, it creates the loud clap that led to the skate's name and forever eliminated the sport's gentle whooshing melody. Skaters using the new skates have been dominating competition. At last year's World Single Distance Championships, 13 of the 16 men that qualified in the 5000 meters were on clap skates. Clap skate users also won first and third in the women's All-Around World Distance Championship. "We saw skaters medal this year who had never been a factor before," says U.S. skater Casey FitzRandolph, "and the difference was definitely the clap skate." For the world's top skaters, the message is loud and clear: clap or be heard from no more.

The earliest evidence available of the existence of ice-skating was uncovered when a pair of skates were retrieved from the bottom of a Swiss lake. These skates dated back to some 3000 years before the birth of Christ. The first skates were made from honed animal bone and attached to the feet with leather straps. The Dutch word for skates means 'leg bone'.
Early History The use of iron blades on ice-skates dates back to 1250 in the Netherlands. During the early 1500's, the Dutch invented the double edge iron blade that allowed for propulsion without the use of poles. This method of propelling while on ice-skates is still used today and is known as the Dutch roll.
During the 1600’s and 1700's, ice-skating became a popular winter recreation amongst Europeans. It was a sport that was participated in by peasants as well as the aristocrats of all ages. By the year of 1642, Scotland had organized the first ice-skating club in its capital, Edinburgh. As popularity grew, the need for competition arose. The first documented organized ice-skating competition was held in East Anglia, England on February 4, 1763. This was a speed skating event that consisted of a 15-mile race on the frozen canals.
