Click for full size image Greetings from sunny Bethpage, Long Island, New York. Look what I purchased on e-Bay for my websitejust love it! Any way of finding out if any of these little guys are still living in Snohomish. Walter My father-in-law is Russell Neil. His father Harold Neil owned and operated Neil Electric the name on the soap box racer in the picture. We are still trying to figure out where the picture was taken. Dave Have you tried contacting All American Soap Box Derby. They probably have records back to 1934 when the derby first started. They can be contacted at www.aasbd.org . Great picture! Joe I have no idea who the guys are, but the street scene bares a striking resemblance to the corner of Wall Street and Colby Ave. in Everett Washington. If you were standing in the same position as the photographer, looking the same direction and the building across the street wasn't there, you'd see the courthouse. I say that because there's a small sharp "point" on the roof of the building. That point could very well be the top of the steeple of the church across from the courthouse to the north. The photographer would be facing southwest. There you go! Marvin

Boys' Clothing for Different Outdoor Activities and Events: Soap Box Derbies
Figure 2.Soap Box Derbies which originated in America, proved extremely popular after World War II in Europe. This image is from a Soap Box Derby in the Netherlands during 1950. The Soap Box Derby was created by the American press photographer Myron E. Scott in the 1930s. He once saw boys going down a hill in their self made cars. These cars were often made out of soap boxes, hence the reason for the name. It was his idea to organize soap box races. These races were an immediate success in America and after World War II (1939-45) also caught on in Europe. In some countries such as the Netherlands they continued to be popular in the 1980s! They continue to be held in America. In America it was one of the major youth evnts. About 4 million people attended the 1949 national soap box races in Akron, Ohio. The substantial press coverage provide us with fascinating annual glimpses of boys clothing in each of the countries where the Soap Box Derbies were held.
Origins
Chronology
We are not sure when Scott first observed boys racing their self-built cars. The first All-American race was held in Dayton in 1934. The race was moved to its present location in Akron in 1935 because of its central location and hilly terrain. Because of the enormous popularity, Akron civic leaders immediately realized that a a permanent track site was needed with the appropriate facilities. The Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal agency to provide jobs for the Depression unemployed, helped to make Derby Downs became a reality. Every year since 1934, with the exception of World War II (1942-45), boy and later girl champs from local races held throughout the United States and several foreign countries have come to Akron with the racers they personally built to compete.

Free Lance- Star Classic Soap Box Derby

Every June, over 150 young (ages 9 through 16) drivers walk up the hill on Williams Street in Fredericksburg. At the top of the hill awaits their car, a soap box derby car that is. Fredericksburg is home to one of the largest soap box derby events in the nation. The winners in the superstock and stock divisions will go on to compete at the national derby in Akron, Ohio, in late July. Fredericksburg ran it's first soap box derby in 1951, the race ran for 21 years until it was discontinued in 1972. The tradition was revived in 1996 and has been going on strong ever since. The race is divided into two categories, stock and superstock. The stock cars have more restrictions placed on them and is for the younger children. The superstock cars are designed for the older kids. There are plenty of great spots along the hill to watch the races, it is a thrill for the young and old alike.

Rule Book
From its humble beginnings in 1946 as a minor part of the Mission Board of Trade's Strawberry Festival, the Mission Soapbox Derby grew to be a major event eventually overshadowing the Strawberry Festival, attracting 20,000 people in 1956.
In 1974 due to a lack of interest and the withdrawal of a major sponsor the derby was canceled, and although there were many attempts to resurrect it, the derby was not re-established until 1999, a quarter of a century later.
