What is Soap Box Derby Racing?
Fun for the Whole Family! Origins Soap Box Derby began over 50 years ago when a newspaper reporter from Dayton, Ohio wrote a story about some kids racing down a hill in carts made from soap boxes and crates. A few years later, the newspaperman had organized the race into an event that is now a part of American tradition. Family Fun From building the car, to weekend racing, to competing for National Championships - soap box derby is definitely a family activity. The kids compete, the parents coach, and relatives cheer them all on. It's also a great way to meet super people from across the United States. Many families stay involved long after their racing days are over to talk with friends, tell old stories, or to assist a new family. Sportsmanship When asked, one of the most frequent benefits drivers aquire in derby is sportsmanship. Drivers often make friendships with their fellow competitors and treat them with respect if they win and wish them luck if they lose. Getting Involved Boys and girls ages 8-18 are generally eligible to compete in soap box derby races held all over the country.

First-timer takes Soap Box Derby
By Christine Metz , Staff Reporter Sunday, May 16, 2004 Megan Rae sat at the top of Rockies Way in her light blue derby car, wished her opponent good luck and tucked her head. Then she waited for the metal stopper to drop and her car to start rolling. "It was the most nervous I have ever been in my life," the 9-year-old Steamboat girl said Saturday. Seconds later, Rae won her eighth race of the day the championship round of the fourth annual Soap Box Derby and a trip to Akron, Ohio, for the national soap Box Derby finals. In the final race, Rae beat out Clinton Galorath by less than one-hundredth of a second. The thrill of winning any race was a surprise for the first-time Soap Box Derby participant.

I'm not angry,
I'm just amused at your quest for attention
through your self abuse.
The only response that you get for your pleasis sorely
less than sympathy.
What reason is there to be alive?
When the word is against you how can you survive?
All your friends are apathetic at best, and your entire life is a total mess. Give it a fuckin' rest. You can't feel me, feel, I'm scarred so deep. No one needs me. Could you please leave me alone? I'm sorry to hear that your world's sinking fast and you've lost your stable ground and I'm sorry to add to your disappointment, but I won't be brought down. I'm not angry, I'm just amused at all the dramatics you love to use, but one thing I have noticed that is strange to me is that you're not content until you're brought down

Most Recent Headlines THE TOP STORY: How will Iraq issues impact elections?
By Chris Graham/AFP David McQuilkin is not convinced that the Iraqi-prisoner-abuse scandal that has been the subject of national and world headlines for going on three weeks now will have the legs to carry itself into the November election cycle. "It's very difficult to say where we will be come November," said McQuilkin, a professor of history and political science at Bridgewater College.
INSIDE ... Model for success

By Chris Graham/AFP The group of delegates were pressing for a reconvene session, or something like it. "We just blew through those last five or six bills. Is there any way we can ask that they be brought back up for consideration?" one asked. "Sorry. We're done," said the man to whom the request was lobbed. He seemed the authority figure of the group, for sure. Shadowy though he was.
IN FOCUS: Fiscal gymnastics
By Chris Graham/AFP Gov. Mark Warner's appearance at the Museum of American Frontier Culture in Staunton on Monday had the feel of a campaign rally to it. Del. Steve Landes, R-Weyers Cave, and the chair of the House Republican Caucus, has an idea as to why that might be. "The governor is very good at PR. He has a good press staff that cranks out three or four or five news releases every day ..." OBITUARIES: May 26, 2004

http://www.yampavalley.info/youth0120.asp
>Youth in Motion-Soap Box Derby Youth in Motion Soap Box Derby The soap box derby is a gravity racing program for boys and girls ages 8 through 17 years old. This is a unique program that encourages close youth adult activities while building a race car.
The dream begins when the idea of building a car and racing a Soap Box derby car become a reality. The construction of the gravity race car reinforces the importance of setting and completing goals while developing traits such as self teaching the driver proper use of tools. The youth is encouraged to do as much of the work as his/her skill level permits. Building and racing a race car is a lot of fun and a rewarding experience for both youth and adult.
Regardless of the outcome of a race, each youth is a winner as they have shared a memorable experience with their adult.
Get started by checking in with the Steamboat Springs Parks and Rec Department at 245 Howelsen Parkway (next to the ice rink)for more information and registration forms.
The event normally gets kicked off in early March when kids start building their cars.

The Artists Soap Box Derby
Photo Essay by Brendan Merritt (text by Philip H. Farber)
On August 23, 1998, The Donskoj Gallery in Kingston, New York sponsored the Third Annual Artists Soap Box Derby. Like other soap box derbies, the event featured vehicles that rolled down a steep slope, the lower end of Broadway in Kingston's historic Rondout district. The difference in this event was that speed and even maneuverability were not the important criteria. Crazed vehicles created by area artists careened at great speed (or, in the case of some, at a snail's pace) down the road while photographers swarmed to capture the weirdness on film. No one was run over, but one lobster was reported to have been eaten. The event opened with a Gypsy Procession that featured the band Bardo Motel and Kinetic- Percussion Necktie Fashions by Marilyn Stablein.
There were sixteen entries to the competition, some of which are depicted below: Sheila (the name of the vehicle, not the driver)
The Full Moon
Bubbles
Wrenchasaurus
Table Lamp
The Dump Nest

The Winner by a wrench

Text and photos by Cecil Houk Cecil Houk's Soap Box Derby Racer I entered the Soap Box Derby one year, and still have the helmet and tee shirt, and a copy of THE NEW ERA with our pictures in it. I may still have the "A-73" side numbers. I was sponsored by George (?) of Santiam Auto Supply, and made it to Salem for the state finals. The skin of this beast was made of cardboard and painted orange. I might have done better in Salem, but they insisted on taking the wheels off to inspect them. When they put mine back on one had the nut so tight it would hardly move. The man who did this refused to loosen it. The only thing I recall about the banquet held for us was a little something extra in my salad - it moved. I was given another salad; sans extras. Back: I remember ...
