Chairman, Board of Trustees
All-American Soap Box Derby Dear Mr. Hartz, The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression and the organizations listed below are writing to protest efforts by the All-American Soap Box Derby to censor Melanie Payne's book, Champions, Cheaters and Childhood Dreams: Memories of the All-American Soap Box Derby , which is being published this month. In December, at least one official of the Derby attempted to pressure the publisher, the University of Akron Press, to make changes in Ms. Payne's book. This effort failed, but Derby officials have now reportedly blocked the sale of the book at the Derby championship on July 26. According to Ms. Payne, she had a friendly relationship with the Derby during the three years she was writing the book. The Derby's general manager assisted her with research and agreed to let her use official Derby photographs. However, Derby officials were apparently angered when they discovered that the book would include references to cheating by a number of contestants over the years as well as other possibly unflattering information. Ms. Payne says that Robert Troyer, the Derby publicity director, told her in December that the Derby had decided to stop assisting her and would not give her permission to use the official photos.

15 year old Ryan Harrigan races Soap Box Derby cars and is the National Points leader in the Masters Division in the National Derby Rally Series! He won his first event in 1998 and is now the proud owner of approximately 90 trophies! He plans to continue soap box racing for another year before graduating to autocross (lower-speed sports car racing) and, he hopes, eventually to graduate formula one and race in the Indianapolis 500!
Harrigan raced in 4 events and finished 1st in two, and 2nd in the other two! He will try one more time to be National Champ in the other SBD series called National Derby Rally Series. Ryan was first in National Masters Division points last year but at the last minute they changed the rules on measuring the inside of the car. He did not have access to the new template and chose not to race in the National Event, however Ryan had free access to the 2nd place NDR Masters Division car that was raced in Saginaw. (New templates are in the making and will soon be available to be purchased.) Ryan's red car and the "Weissgerber Purple"(click for Pictures)

http://www.somd.com/leonardtown/soapbox.htm
What Is The Soap Box Derby?
The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. The first All-American race was held in Dayton in1934. The following year, the race was moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain. In 1936, Akron civic leaders recognized the need for a permanent track site for the youth racing classic and, through the efforts of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Derby Downs became a reality. Each year since, with the exception of during World War II, youngsters from throughout the United States and several foreign countries have come to Akron with the racers they have built and driven to victory in their home communities. There will be three racing divisions in most locals and at the All-American competition. The Stock division is designed to give the first-time builder a learning experience. Boys and girls, 9 through 16 compete in simplified cars built from kits purchased from the All- American. These kits assist the Derby novice by providing a step-by-step layout for construction of a basic lean forward style car. The Super Stock division gives the competitor an opportunity to expand their knowledge and build a more advanced model. Both of these beginner levels make use of kits and shells available from the All-American. These entry levels of racing are popular in race communities across the country, as youngsters are exposed to the Derby program for the first time.

Over the summer the Derby was very successful. Total they had about 80 kids and are expected to have 100 kids this summer (2002). They still race down Central Ave. Last year Three kids went to The Official derby in Akron, Ohio. It is a really fun day during the summer. The Derby is a very successful event. Future If one looks at the history and the present in search for patterns, one can make certain predictions. We are making the following predictions about the future of Pearl River: Type of Prediction Prediction Why Likely My prediction is t he Derby will flourish and more kids will join. I think this because in 1949 the derby started out with only 20 kids and over the summer they had 80 kids. Reasonable A reasonable prediction is the derby will grow so much they will have to tryout, the first kids will get to race or it will be over the weekend.

Soap Box Derby Racer
Twelve-year-old Russell Dille drove this racing car in a soap box derby competition in Topeka. The car is 75" long and 32" wide. It was used in the 1973 contest only, but ran in several elimination heats on race day. Russell finished in sixth place. As required by national soap box derby rules , Dille built the gravity-powered car himself (with some supervision and help from his father and a family friend). Local sponsors helped participants by paying for materials, which were to total no more than $40 for each car. Chevrolet supplied the wheels, axles, and steering mechanism for Russell's car. On race day, various companies reviewed the competing cars to select vehicles to sponsor. The Kirby vacuum company originally intended to underwrite only the car made by Russell's brother, James, but eventually was persuaded to sponsor both boy's vehicles. Each brother received $40, reimbursement for the materials used to build the cars. The Kirby dealer had with him just two Kirby stickers, one for each side of the single car his company intended to sponsor. Because Kirby ended up underwriting two cars, each vehicle received one sticker instead of two. Race participants were bound by a 250-pound limit (combined weight of driver and car), and the winners of the Topeka race weighed in at about 249 pounds. Russell and his car totalled just 171 pounds. One week after the race he had grown so much that he couldn't fit in his car anymore.

79. The Object At Hand - The Soap Box Derby
The soap box derby, a peculiarly American institution, thrives on a passion for anything that has four wheels and goes fast even if driven by gravity.

document.write(''); The Object at Hand
The Soap Box Derby, a peculiarly American institution, thrives on the U.S. teenage passion for anything that has four wheels and goes fast-even if driven by gravity.
Museum catalog item 318011.1 was built and raced in the finals at Akron in 1961 by Robert Pusateri. It was donated to the Smithsonian by his father. The official catalog description for item 318011.1 is simply "Car, soapbox." It is painted blue and carries on its side the name of its sponsor, the Hartford Times. Fair enough for a museum catalog. But to the boy who built it-now in his mid-40s-this item was not just a car but a racer and a means of transportation to one of young America's dreams of glory. This particular racer ran in the 1961 All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. It was conceived early in the summer of 1960 by Robert Pusateri, then 11 years old. Robert had just lost a soapbox qualifier in Connecticut. His brother, Anthony, was about to race another car in Akron, but Robert was already deep into plans for 1961, the new "soapbox year." By Columbus Day, though the only power tool Robert used was an electric drill, his new car had axle trees and floorboards roughed in. By Easter 1961, Robert and others had spent hundreds and hundreds of hours gluing, clamping and, especially, sanding and polishing the body to cut down drag.
