About the Nordic Center The Inside Track: Director's Diary Nordic Galleries Conditions ... Results
Snowshoeing is the fastest growing outdoor winter recreation activity in the US! Many of our nordic and alpine skiers and non-skier guests are discovering that this activity offers a low cost, easy and enjoyable way to experience the winter landscape while improving your physical fitness. Snowshoeing Is Easy For All Ages
  • Snowshoeing requires no special skills. If you can walk it's a cinch. Children can start snowshoeing as soon as they can walk and continue well into old age.
Snowshoeing Is Great Exercise
  • Like hiking and walking, snowshoeing is a low impact activity that people with average fitness levels can enjoy. Runners, cyclists and other active people have found that depending on your pace, the snow conditions and your work-out schedule snowshoeing can be an excellent aerobic activity, burning up to 1000 calories per hour.
Snowshoeing Is Affordable
  • Other than snowshoes, clothing appropriate for winter activity, water and snacks, you don't need any special equipment. Nearly 1/2 of all snowshoes sold cost $150 or less. Snowshoeing requires no lift ticket. However we do charge a trail fee if you use groomed trails which are open to snowshoeing. No trail pass is required to explore the many un-groomed backcountry hiking trails in the area. A half day adventure using our groomed trails would cost just $25 for trail ticket and rentals.

Hey! Let's go camping! (sastrugi = a type of old, windblown snow waves) As seen in: Yahoo! Internet Life Jeep News Somewhat updated 10/02/03 (see bottom of page). Why snow? Keeps the mosquitoes away. Reason enough to try winter camping. Plus, the bears are asleep most of the time. Before you head out, make sure you know what you're doing. As in any wilderness pursuit where help is not just a phone call away, you are in charge of your well-being... and in wintertime, the margin for error is very small. So hook up with someone experienced, hire a guide, look for a teacher, because little mistakes add up quickly and before you know it you've got yourself into a very dicey situation. While I'm at it, let me point out that I don't think you can learn to winter camp safely from a book, I don't think you can learn it from a Web site... And as the author of this site, I will tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt: you cannot learn to winter camp safely just from the information on this site (a fact that will become grossly apparent as you explore further). I won't deny that some books have helped me tremendously, but most of this stuff is my personal opinion, and it will serve you only if you have enough experience to be able to assess it from an educated viewpoint, and ignore whatever doesn't work for you. To summarize: if you go out and freeze all your toes off, don't blame me. I promise I won't blame you if I freeze any extremities, either.

THE RIGHT STUFF Snowshoeing
This article is available as a print friendly PDF file. Click here As hikers we enjoy to walk and snowshoeing can add a new dimension to winter. It allows us access to places in winter that deep snow would normally keep us from. Cross-country skiing is an excellent way to enjoy winter activity but it requires special equipment and a level of expertise that snowshoeing does not. Snowshoeing only requires a pair of snowshoes. After a morning on your new snowshoes you will qualify as an expert. Snowshoes have evolved from the wood frame and gut to hard plastic and aluminum. There is a wide choice available in outdoor stores and some outfitters will rent them as well. The simplest ones work best and when trying them on you want a binding that is easy for you to use. Remember you will not always be in a store but rather bending over with fingers that may be a little cool. Sunday, February 8, 2004; Page M10 With bone-chilling temperatures keeping many hunkered down inside, cabin fever is almost as common as, well, the cold. How can you warm up to winter? Lure yourself outside by strapping on a pair of snowshoes. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. You may scoff at the idea of binding huge wooden tennis racquets to your boots, but, fact is, the snowshoes you're imagining are now only used as decorations tacked to ski chalet walls. Modern versions are incredibly light, narrow and easy to maneuver: It only takes a few minutes to learn the slightly wider gait necessary for them to clear each other. Then, on days with six inches of snow or more, you can march through Rock Creek Park, down the Mount Vernon Trail or even through your neighborhood. If you'd feel more comfortable with some guidance, several local resorts offer lessons and guided tours. On a recent tour at the Homestead resort in Hot Springs, Va., instructor Sabrina Young gave some quick tips. "Be sure to plant your toes into the snow first so the spikes can grab the ice," she said. "And be careful not to lift your foot too high, or the back of your snowshoe will catch and you'll fall." Within minutes, we were straining up a steep hill, calves burning and thin trails of sweat sliding down our wind-burned faces. But snowshoeing doesn't have to be that difficult. As with walking, the terrain determines your exertion. You can move at your own speed and embrace challenges gradually.

    SNOWSHOEING

Snowshoeing is enjoying increasing popularity in snowy areas, mainly because it is so easy to learn and lots of fun. There are many fine ski areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin that welcome snowshoers. Most of the ski resorts listed on this page offer equipment rentals on-site, so you can try out the latest high-tech snowshoes and get a sense of the sport in a single sunny day.
If your are interested in learning more about snowshoeing, read on, or just click to the snowshoe entries for snowshoeing options in Lake Tahoe.
A Brief History of Snowshoeing From Europe to North America to Asia, people began using snowshoes over 3,000 years ago out of a basic need to find food and explore new territories in the wintertime.
Snowshoers looked to the naturally efficient design of animal paws and began modeling their snowshoes after animal prints they found in nature. Some early styles like the beavertail and bearpaw are still in use today. Some of the earliest snowshoes were over seven feet long which, though unwieldy, were helpful in navigating through very deep powdery snow.
