31. Bear Crossing Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing Trails
Groomed cross country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking trails through 276 acres in northern Wisconsin near the Chequamegon National Forest.

Bear Crossing Ski Trails - Medford, Wisconsin
Introduction Registration Directions to Bear Crossing Wooden Creations Bear Crossing Ski Trails offers 4 miles, (6.5 kilometers), of groomed cross country skiing, and snowshoeing trails through 276 acres of beautiful deep wooded forest. The property borders the Chequamegon National Forest, which provides many other recreational activities. Unique to Bear Crossing Ski Trails is the short loop trail layout design, patterned after old logging trails. Each ski loop has a different terrain and forest type providing an ideal experience for all ages and skill levels. The flat trails that meander through the aspen stands and tag alder swamps are excellent for first time skiers or those who just prefer a leisurely ski. The delightful rolling hills of the pine, balsam, and mixed hardwood stands provide a greater challenge for those looking for a faster adventure. The Bear Crossing ski trails are great for all ages, young families, experienced skiers, and the elderly, due to the connecting nature of the trails. Skiers are able to match their skills, desires, and distance by determining the trails taken - ensuring an enjoyable outing for all. The majority of the trails intertwine through heavily wooded areas providing excellent opportunities to enjoy the wildlife. The abundant wildlife activity is apparent in the snow trails of the white tail deer, snowshoe hares, ruffed grouse as they make their way though the woods and across the trails. Chickadees, nuthatches, and bluejays fill the air with their sounds and an occasional porcupine can be seen in the treetops.

Be a Bigfoot:
Snowshoeing in Montana
Getting Started (for beginners) Getting Equipment Getting Prepared Getting on Montana's Trails Getting Started
Snowshoeing? Fun? Maybe you're one of those people who still think of snowshoeing as an arduous drudge in giant, clunky contraptions. Which is to say you haven't tried snowshoeing recently. It's one of the fastest growing winter sports, and snowshoe technology has made giant strides (if you'll pardon the pun) in recent years. Plus, it has at least two great advantages: 1) You don't need to sacrifice your life savings to buy equipment; and 2) It's easy. If you're a snowshoeing neophyte, there's no need to bite your nails. Snowshoeing is probably one of the few challenging sports in the world that don't have a steep learning curve. Basically, if you can put one foot in front of the other, you're well on your way to having some fun with snowshoes. Start by practicing on a level surface before you race into the backcountry. And be prepared: although snowshoes are designed to keep you on top of the snow, they're not magical. You will sink somewhatgenerally about 8 inches if you're in waist-deep snow. Getting Equipment
Most modern snowshoes have the same basic design, but there are some differences in construction, size, materials, etc. To start gauging your preferences, try a couple of "dry run" trips with rented snowshoes (usually only about $10 a day). If you decide you want to jump into snowshoeing for the long haul, you can start shopping for your very own snowshoes. Expect to spend about $100-$300 for a good pair. (You'll probably want to invest in poles, as well; they'll be heaven-sent when you're out on the trails.)
