Carl Heilman has been involved in the sport of snowshoeing ever since making his first pair of snowshoes in the early 1970's. He has written numerous articles on the subject and has also published a booklet on making snowshoes (unnavailable until fall 2004). He's been leading beginner's and advanced snowshoeing workshops for the Adirondack Mtn. Club and the Appalachian Mtn. Club since the mid 1980's and has also done programs and workshops for many other organizations and schools throughout the northeast. He has also led snowshoe clinics for the major outdoor industry trade show held each winter in Salt Lake City. Carl handcrafted his 'high-tech' traditional snowshoes until 1997, and has also done some snowshoe design consulting work with major manufacturers. His snowshoes have been used all over the world, and some of his ideas for snowshoe design have been incorporated into commercial designs. While he enjoys passing along his expertise on snowshoeing and winter travel, he especially enjoys seeing folks turn-on to the sport after using snowshoes for the first time!
The following pages are a result of his trying to help demystify the sport of snowshoeing and choosing snowshoes. Each facet of snowshoes and snowshoeing has been broken down into it's simplest components. Hopefully this will help provide a better understanding of snowshoes so folks can more easily choose snowshoes that are best suited for them, and help them take those first steps in the snow with confidence! WINTER HIKING
There's probably a few good reasons to hang up the hiking boots during the WinterI just can't think of one ! Many of the trails that we travel in Spring, Summer, and Fall are also available during the Winter. Many public parks, cities, and towns maintain trail systems which remain accessible for Winter hiking and even snowshoeing. Some have special rules that apply to Winter use so check with them for specifics. If nothing else, it's a great way to keep those hiking muscles active. Many lowland backcountry trails are also available year-round, albeit muddy. Trails in the mountains, (although buried in deep snow) are also traversable (with the help of some special gear). With some additional education, training, and gear, there's no reason we can't be just as actively hiking in the Winter as in the other three seasons. Check it out ! Find out what's available in your area. You might be surprised at the possibilities. For the higher elevations, why not try snowshoeing ?

Snowshoeing the Superior Hiking Trail Wait... Before you get lost in my snowshoeing adventure, check out my recent trip to Costa Rica When I started planning our snowshoeing trip I spent a lot of time trying to find information about some hikes on the internet. I was somewhat unlucky and only found good information from the Superior Hiking Trail Association Website. Hopefully, my recap of my trip can help you plan yours. Hike 1 - Gooseberry Falls State Park
We did this hike the first day, because I thought it would be nice to see the falls and it would be a nice start to a three day trip. Our goal was to follow the snowshoe path up the south side of the river to the fifth falls and then cross the river and come back down on the north side of the river. Unfortunately the path had such little snow cover we decided almost immediately to hike on Gooseberry River.
The second part of our hike we decided to take off our snowshoes and follow the snowshoe loop on the south side of Hwy 61. This is a beautiful hike to a cliff that overlooks Lake Superior.
Total hiking time for both hikes: 4 Hours
Overall rating: B Path is much too beaten down for snowshoeing. If you accept that, or hike on the river, then it's a beautiful hike. The visitors center at Gooseberry falls is brand new and worth visiting!

snowshoers to trek almost anywhere with ease. So come try snowshoeing in its ideal state. It s invigorating exercise, a perfect activity
    http://www.vermontvacation.com/recreation/snowshoeing.asp
nowshoeing has been a way of life in the Green Mountains for well over a century, long before the sport became fashionable again. We've got countless ways to make tracks into the snowy wilderness, whether it's a nature trek, a climb or a winter workout you're looking for.
Best of all, when you strap on showshoes in Vermont, you step into a spectacular landscape that seems to have been made just for the sport, all while enjoying one of the healthiest forms of winter exercise.
For starters, Vermont has dozens of king-of-the-mountain climbs: easy, accessible peaks offering stunning winter vistas, and a bunch of rugged 4,000-footers where experienced snowshoers can find the remote solitude and breathtaking beauty of a winter mountaintop. If you want to look for wildlife or explore the tranquility of our snowy forests and fields, we've got untold miles of old logging roads and forest paths, frozen lakes and bogs, nature trails and recreation paths. No matter where you are in Vermont, a great trek is just a few steps away. Plus, Vermont's Green Mountain Club sponsors sociable treks throughout the state and climbs all winter on parts of the Long Trail, which runs the length of Vermont across the high mountains. If you've never tried snow- shoeing but want to get started, that's easy too. Cross country ski centers, alpine ski resorts, sport shops and inns all over Vermont rent snowshoes or offer guided walks that introduce this ancient form of winter travel - on light, modern shoes that make it a breeze. And everywhere all winter, you'll find all kinds of exciting opportunities, from moonlight hikes to tours on mountain ridgelines, snowshoe races and bird-watching expeditions.

    Snowshoeing
Winter activities such as skiing and snowshoeing at Mesa Verde can be a very peaceful experience. Many times you may be the only person around. Because most of the trees are bare, wildlife is more visible in the winter. You may even be able to track them by following their footprints in the snow.
In recent years, there has not been enough snow to ski or snowshoe except for a few days during the winter after a heavy snowfall. Colorado's dry climate and sunshine cause the snow to melt quickly after a snow storm. Please call (970)529-4461 for current park road and skiing/snowshoeing conditions.
If you are fortunate enough to be able to ski or snowshoe in Mesa Verde National Park, you will not be disappointed. Two park roads listed below are designated for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow permits. Skiing or snowshoeing in the backcountry of Mesa Verde National Park or other park roads is not permitted. Cliff Palace Loop Road:
6 mile loop, relatively flat, no avalanche danger. Located off the Mesa Top Loop Road, the Cliff Palace Loop Road is closed to vehicles after the first snowfall. It reopens in the spring once all snow is melted. Skiers and snowshoers can park at the closed gate. One mile from the closed gate is the overlook to Cliff Palace. Along the road are also numerous overlooks with scenic views to other cliff dwellings which can make for a full-day adventure.
