May 26, 2004 We the undersigned, endorse the following petition: Help Keep Snowmobiles Out of Yellowstone Target: National Park Service Win Use Rulemaking Sponsor: Save Our Environment SIGNATURES GOAL: 20,000 DEADLINE: 10-15-2003 Thanks to the tireless efforts of activists around the country, both the public and Congress recognize the devastating impacts snowmobiles have in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Unfortunately the battle is not yet over. It has been more than two years since the Bush administration told us that they intended to "reexamine" the original Park Service study and decision to replace noisy, polluting snowmobiles with park-friendly, multi-passenger snowcoaches. Now the new rule will continue to allow snowmobile use in Yellowstone, and we need your voice in this final public comment period. During the public comment period for the Bush draft supplemental environmental impact statement, more than 360,000 people commented and 80% of those comments supported the original plan to ban snowmobiles. Congress heard these voices. An amendment to ban snowmobiles from Yellowstone in the House lost by virtue of a tie (210-210) including 25 Republican votes. We need to demand protection for our first national park! By signing the petition below, an official comment will be sent to the Park Service on your behalf.

Tuesday, April 06, 2004 From the editors of E/The Environmental Magazine Dear EarthTalk: Why are environmentalists trying to get snowmobiles banned from national parks? According to Katy Rexford, Public Lands Associate for Bluewater, snowmobiles dump more than 100,000 gallons of fuel and 2,500 gallons of oil into Yellowstone's ecosystem every year. Banning two-stroke engines in favor of four-stroke engines would make snowmobiles 80 percent cleaner, said Rexford. But switching to four-stroke engines will not greatly affect the noise pollution. The piercing noise of snowmobiles is also at issue; studies have shown that snowmobiles can be heard 90 percent of the time in Yellowstone, thus destroying natural soundscapes and diminishing opportunities for more contemplative forms of recreation. Another issue is their impact on wildlife: Canadian scientists found that the noise from snowmobiles disturbs animals up to 1,250 feet away. Even when restricted to approved and maintained trails, snowmobiles can push bison, wolves, elk, moose, and bald eagles out of their preferred habitats.

Snowmobiles: The Snow Can't Hide the Wreckage From Alaska's Denali National Park and Preserve to the flagship Yellowstone National Park, our forests and parks protect and preserve some our most untamed and beautiful landmarks. Indeed, these places embody American ideals of wildness and originality. But the trail of pollution and destruction left by snowmobiles threatens this heritage. Approximately 250,000 snowmobiles run roughshod though the Park System each year. More than 60,000 snowmobiles zoom through Yellowstone National Park alone. Most snowmobiles are powered by two-stroke engines which dump 25-30 percent of their fuel unburned out the tailpipe. The air pollution from these dirty machines is so bad that Yellowstone Park Rangers now wear respirators to protect themselves. The piercing noise of snowmobiles can often be heard throughout our parks; studies show that these machines can be heard 90 percent of the time in Yellowstone. And snowmobiles harass and threaten wildlife. Even when restricted to approved and maintained trails, snowmobiles can push bison, wolves, elk, and moose, even the bald eagle, out of their preferred habitats.
