May 10, 2004 Bears wake up, blank FactSet Buttermaker calls 17-0 shutout performance “flawless” By Ty Webb MARGATE PARK, CHICAGO In all his years as Bears manager, Morris Buttermaker had never been as overwhelmed as he was prior to Monday night’s game. Nor had he been drinking so much. His championship team had begun the ’04 season miserably with two straight lethargic losses, including a pasting by a score of 21-1 in their last game. Then news came over the weekend that Greg Liebbe had injured himself in a freak bus accident while attending Bear catcher Chris “Daz” Dowsett’s bachelor party. The extent of Liebbe’s injury is still fuzzy, but Liebbe was forced to miss Monday’s game, along with Bear Scott “the Scooter” Koch, who is rumored to be in Southeast Asia on holiday for the next several weeks. Even worse, the weather had been threatening all day. Several Bears did not seem to want to get into their uniforms and get wet. Still yet, pitcher Devin Huber was unaccounted for at gametime, forcing “Daz” to start the game on the mound in what was a chaotic scene, to say the least. The rains mercifully held off, though, and to just about everyone’s surprise, everything finally seemed to click for the Bears Monday night.
