Issue 9 November 1996
A profile of sledding injuries
by Janet Brown, Analyst,
Child Injury Division
Sledding is a popular winter activity among children. It has been reported that each winter 75% of Canadian children participate in at least one snow-sliding sport. This report is based on information collected from the CHIRPP database for sledding injuries occurring in the six months between November 1, 1994 and April 30, 1995. All types of snow-sliding equipment were looked at, including GT-type sleds (three-ski sleds), toboggans, crazy carpets, inner tubes and snow disks. Snowboarding injuries were not included. Records of injuries that occurred indoors or that involved a sled being towed by a vehicle were eliminated. A total of 806 records were identified. Distribution of patients by age and sex Most sledding injuries were to children between the ages of 5 and 14. Of all sledding injuries, 14.7% were to children younger than 5 years of age, 35.1% were to 5 9 year olds, 41.8% were to 10 14 years olds, and 8.3% were to people 15 years of age or older. The proportion of records in the CHIRPP database during this time period due to sledding injuries was 1.5%. Overall, 57.7% of injuries were to males. Circumstance of injury More than half (59.3%) of the injuries occurred in an outdoor recreation area. Other places included the home yard (17.8%), daycare or school (6.9%), and transportation areas such as a road, footpath or parking area (1.7%).

Pennsylvanians have loved downhill sledding since I can remember. In fact, I can recall having been pulled around on a runner sled at less than 2-years-of-age. By the time that I was four, I couldn't wait to get out the door. As soon as the snow started falling, the guys would start getting the gear together. Things haven't changed much. All you need is a "good snow" and a steep slope. As you get in closer to the city, finding a clear slope can be more challanging. Youngsters tend to favor retention basins, the neighbors yard, a golf course, or the local park. In Montgomery County, Fort Washington State Park offers a free place to sled in a beautiful location.

The Siberian Husky Social Club of Big Bear Lake, CA Dog Sledding ~ Skijoring ~ Carting ~ Hiking ~ Biking ~ Camping ~ Picnics Welcome! We first started The Siberian Husky Social Club of Big Bear Lake in January, of 1998. Unlike other breed specific clubs, we are not interested in breeding or showing our dogs. Our interests center around organizing activities that will challenge this remarkable breed of dog and provide them with the level of social interaction they need to flourish. We are open to all people and all dog breeds as long as both dog and owner are friendly and have been properly socialized. Our club promotes responsible dog ownership through education, spay and neutering, and we are strong supporters of breed rescue, and will not recommend dog breeders. Dog Sledding in Montana
Answering the Call of the Wild Montana Dog Sled Events Companies Offering Dog Sled Adventures Answering the Call of the Wild Admit it. After reading "The Call of the Wild" for the first time in high school, you secretly yearned to hitch a team of huskies and yell "mush." Well, you can do just that in Montana. The popularity of dog sledding has been growing across the country in the last few years, and more and more companies in Big Sky Country are putting their winters on paws. You can find everything from quick half-day sled outings with a guide to multi-night resort adventures with planned dog sled itineraries. And no, you don't need to bring a pack of 12 huskies along; you'll find trained teams and everything else you need to get started at any of the companies listed below. Montana Dog Sled Events If the thought of trying to control a dozen yipping huskies seems a bit overwhelming, you can always do the next best thing: watch someone else try to control them. Montana has become an epicenter for high-profile dog sled races and events, including the Seeley Lake 100/200 Sled Dog Race and the Race to the Sky. The Seeley-Lincoln 100/200 is a 104/207-mile race is used as a ‘warm-up’ for the Race to the Sky and is also a qualifier for the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest Dog Sled Races in Alaska. Dog care, not speed, is the race’s emphasis, with a mandatory 4-hour camping stop at the halfway point. Lots of fun for mushers and spectators!. The race starts in Seeley Lake on Saturday afternoon and offers excellent opportunities for spectators. The teams will be available for viewing on Saturday afternoon. There is a four-hour campout at Monture Creek on Saturday night. The 100-mile race will end on Sunday morning in Lincoln at Hi-Country Beef Jerky. This will also be the turn-around point for the 200-mile race. The 200-mile teams will be there for four hours before returning to Seeley Lake. Hi-Country will also be a good spectator site on Sunday morning.

    Slip Sliding Away:
A Different Kind of Downhill Safety First A Different Kind of Downhill Anyone who grew up in a northern climate has fond memories of sledding, tobogganing, tubing, or otherwise sliding down a hill on some sort of contraption. It's as much an annual winter ritual as building snowmen or making snow angels. What's one of the first scenes to come to mind when you think of "It's a Wonderful Life"? George saving his brother in the sledding accident, of course. And what about Citizen Kane's final word: Rosebud? It was conjured by memories of his favorite childhood sled. Clearly, sledding appeals to the kid in all of us. All across Montana, you'll find popular sledding hills in every townjust follow the kids with smiles on their faces. In addition, many resorts have sledding and tobogganing. The Big Mountain, for instance, has built a special run just for such purposes. Safety First Now for the not-so-fun part about sledding, tobogganing and tubing: they can be dangerous. Yes, every mother says that, but it also happens to be quite true. In fact, the two most common injuries caused by sledding are head injuries and broken bonesboth of which can be serious. Time after time, the cause of injury is loss of controlthe person sledding simply cannot turn and runs into an object or falls off. This can be avoided by following a few safety precautions.
