Rustic Dog Sledding Expeditions
in Algonquin Park, Ontario
After meeting the dog sled teams, at the edge of Algonquin Park, you will be given instructions on the proper technique of controlling a dog sled and a team of eager sled dogs. You will help harness the Huskies, hook them up to the dogsleds, and issue a command..."Mush"! Off you will race as the dogs strain at their harnesses, happy to be pulling a dog sled once again. After they settle down into their natural pace, you will steer them into the forests surrounding Algonquin Park, navigating twisting trails and wide open frozen lakes. On the flat parts of the trail you can relax with the wind blowing in your face, and watch the majestic winter forest silently glide by! In the evening we get to enjoy the "wilderness luxury" of the Algonquin Wilderness Eco-Lodge deep inside the forests of the Algonquin region. But first, everyone must help out with the chores. The first thing to do is look after our hard working sled dogs! This comprises of unhooking them from their dogsleds, feeding and watering them. We also have to make sure they have suitable shelter from the cold Algonquin night wind, and store our dog sleds away. We are then free to relax, go snowshoeing, or partake in our winter ritual - bathing suit "snow angels"! Then jump into the outdoor hot tub or sauna! After enjoying a gourmet home cooked meal we can sit around the old fashioned wood stove and exchanging travellers' tales and ghost stories! The wood stove and wood furnace ensure that we're all toasty warm at night!

Gift Certificates Available! Algonquin Park is world famous for its canoe routes - there are over 1600km of them! On one of our Algonquin wilderness Canoe trips you will experience the wild Algonquin Park. We avoid the busy "tourist" areas in Algonquin that others go to - the places in Algonquin Park that we camp in are secluded and well off the beaten track. It is also the best place in the world to see moose, hear a wolf howling in the distance, or see a beaver. Perfect for wildlife viewing, or just relaxing. And in winter we can reveal Algonquin Park to you by another exciting method - on a Dog Sledding Expedition! We provide high quality "Total Immersion" Soft Adventure trips geared towards people who like to experience life instead of watch it pass them by! In the summer we offer various exciting trips including wilderness camping, guided Algonquin Park canoe trips, and hiking. In the winter we have dog sledding expeditions, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, all in the beautiful, snowy setting of Algonquin. We also offer exciting Round Algonquin Park (RAP) snowmobile safaris! Of course we don't neglect the rest of Ontario. We also have canoe trips that explore Killarney Park and Temagami, and short snowmobile safaris in the Haliburton Highlands.

BC's Eagle Valley hosts some of the best alpine sledding in all of British Columbia and the world. Eagle's Pass Mountain, pictured top left, is just one of four vast snowmobiling areas flanking the rugged Eagle Valley as it snakes its way through the Monashee Mountains from Sicamous to Revelstoke. Here, the daily snowfalls can dwarf the yearly accumulations in most parts of Canada. Whether you're staying in Sicamous, where two of these great areas can be accessed on the edge of town, or traveling the short distance from Revelstoke to take advantage of the untracked snow and often better weather, we know you'll agree that our powder laden sledding areas are second to none. All four of our alpine snowmobiling areas, Owlhead, Queest, Blue Lake and Eagle's Pass, are reached by forest service roads that are carefully groomed by The Eagle Valley Snowmobile Grooming Society, a non-profit organization that exists to make your sledding experience a "smooth" one, and to promote the incredible sledding opportunities in this region. Three of the riding areas now feature cozy log chalets.

Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers in northwestern Illinois, the 2,500-acre Mississippi Palisades State Park is rich in American Indian history. Natural Features Palisades is the word used to describe a line of lofty, steep cliffs usually seen along a river, and Mississippi Palisades, 3 miles north of Savanna in Carroll County, handsomely lives up to its name. Caves are evident as are dangerous sink holes-limestone caves that go straight down. Erosion has carved intriguing rock formations, including Indian Head, with its aquiline characteristics, and Twin Sisters, a pair of humanoid figures on the bluff tops. The U.S. Interior Department recognized the remarkable nature of this area when in 1973 it designated acreage here as a national landmark. Animal life, within the park and the river areas immediately adjoining it, is varied. Waterfowl and shorebirds are numerous, as are wild turkeys. Striking pileated woodpeckers make their home in the park, and depending on ice conditions, eagles feed at the river in January and February. Because so many birds migrate along the river, their lyrical songs can be heard at the Mississippi Palisades each spring and fall.

UPDATE: May 19, 2003 - Due to staff shortages Turkey Hollow Day Use Area is temporarily closed. Jubilee College State Park is a 3,200-acre facility, located in Peoria County between the towns of Kickapoo and Brimfield, just off U.S. Route 150. This scenic area, with its rolling topography and meandering Jubilee Creek, offers various outdoor recreational opportunities.
    History
Named Jubilee College by its founder, Episcopal Bishop Philander Chase in 1839, in expression of his thankfulness and joy, the college was one of the earliest educational enterprises in Illinois. Through a series of misfortunes climaxed by the Bishop's death, the college closed in 1862. In 1933 the college and grounds, consisting of 93 acres, were presented to the state of Illinois. Since that time the Department of Natural Resources increased the acreage to 3,200. The college building, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, has been restored to its original appearance and is under the management of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
