They call it the Last Great Race. It covers nearly 1,200 miles across some of the toughest terrain on earth, through some of the bitterest winter weather in the world. Sled dogs racing the Iditarod. Still, there is something about Alaska's Iditarod sled dog race that keeps competitors coming back year after year, eager to test their 16-dog teams and mushing skills against the elements and each other.
NATURE's SLED DOGS: AN ALASKAN EPIC provides a compelling portrait of this competition, a test of endurance for both dog and driver. It follows several teams as they race to overcome the many obstacles, physical and psychological, they encounter along the trail. And it allows armchair mushers, if only for a moment, to share in both the spectacle and splendor of the Alaskan wilderness and the special bond that unites the racers with their partners, the sled dogs . "It's an unbelievable adventure," says Joe Runyan, the 1989 Iditarod champion.

Yukon Quest Challenges Mushers
From Around the World
Imagine racing along a broken trail behind a dozen running sled dogs. The moon and stars and several thousand marked stakes show you the way. As you take your chances against the frigid weather and rugged terrain, a few dozen men and women, and a few hundred racing dogs are bound and determined to leave you behind in the white, cold Arctic dust. Depending on your competitors for survival, you retrace the footsteps of Gold Rush trappers, miners, explorers and missionaries through ghost towns being slowly reclaimed by the wilderness. With more than 100 miles to the comfort of the next checkpoint, the only sound is the hiss of the sled runners on the frozen river and the padding of the dog-team pulling you relentlessly forward.
This is the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, a 1,000 mile journey aptly billed as The Challenge of the North. The annual race leads mushers between Fairbanks, Alaska and Whitehorse, in the Yukon Territory; through isolated wilderness in harsh winter conditions that test outdoor survival skills and the close bond between musher and dog.
2000 marks the 17th year of the race, which will start in downtown Fairbanks. Usually the course alternates direction each year.

Ultimate Iditarod NEWS FLASH
Iditarod Race Route Has Again Been Modified
February 21, 2003 By Ultimate Iditarod's Jim Gallea Well, it's official...we think. As of today, the race managers and Board of Directors of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race have decided on the race trail of the 2003 Iditarod. However, the route has again been changed from the course that was announced nearly two weeks ago. Here's what we know: As reported earlier, the ceremonial start will take place on Saturday, March 1, in downtown Anchorage. Rather than running the 25 miles from Anchorage to Eagle River, a shorter, 11-mile trail to Campbell Airstrip will be run. The re-start of the race will take place at 10 AM on Monday, March 3, on the Chena River near Pike's Landing in Fairbanks. From Fairbanks, the trail will run to Nenana, then Manley, and then Tanana. From Tanana, the trail will meet the traditional Iditarod race trail at Ruby. Rather than running the traditional race trail backwards from Ruby to Ophir as planned earlier, the racers will follow the Yukon River from Ruby to Galena and then on to Kaltag. From Kaltag, teams will continue downriver on the Yukon to Shageluk, then turn around at Shageluk and head back up river to Kaltag. While running this loop, the checkpoint of Eagle Island will be used by teams going both up river and down river. However, the checkpoint of Anvik will only be used on the downriver run, and Grayling will only be used on the up river run. After stopping a second time at Kaltag, teams will follow the normal Iditarod race trail to Unalakleet and then up the Bering Sea Coast to Nome.

A Local Legacy

Have you ever been in a race? How long was it? How would you like to be in a race that is more than 1,000 miles long, involves treacherous climbs, and lasts for nine to 20 days in sub-zero temperatures, much of it in darkness and blinding winds? Sounds incredible? Well, that is what some people do every year in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska. Called "the last great race on Earth," the Iditarod (pronounced eye-DIT-a-rod) consists of teams of 12 to 16 dogs pulling a sled driven by a man or woman, called a "musher." The race, which begins on the first Saturday every March, runs from Anchorage in the south to Nome on the western Bering Sea. The journey takes the mushers over mountains, through dense forests, and across frozen rivers and tundra. Each year 50 to 80 mushers leave the starting gate, and for many of them their main goal is just to complete the race. The Iditarod is the ultimate test of humans and animals against nature.

http://www.emily.net/~schiller/mushing.html
As long as there is snow, there's bound to be someone somewhere running a team of dogs through it. Mushing is a recreation that has peaked and ebbed over the last thirty years - the 1980's being a high point, when almost everyone in America had at least heard the word Iditarod and watched the race between Rick Swenson and Susan Butcher with an interest that was reminiscent of the Riggs and King tennis match of the '70's. Many new mushers joined the bandwagon during this period, and hobby farmers were suddenly raising sled dogs instead of chickens. "Man would not be on the face of the earth if it had not been for the domestic dog," says Edward Dallas, as we visit with him at his home in Deerwood, Minnesota. Ed had a 10-minute stint as "Gunnar Tveit" in the Disney film Iron Will , and he had this to ask us: "What possessed the dog to break away from the wolf, the jackal, the fox, and step into that circle of light cast by our cavemen ancestors' campfire? Something had to possess him to say, 'I will step inside that circle.' And when he did, I think it was a bond that was set for the rest of time." These sentiments expressed by Dallas, a veteran dog musher, could probably be echoed by canine lovers all around the globe. But especially by dog mushers, who by choice spend the greater part of their day with their dogs. Sled dogs are mainly Alaskan Huskies, a Heinz 57 dog bred to pull and travel. "They were bred out of the Siberian Husky during the gold rush days," Dallas explains, "with Indian dogs, and other big dogs in the arctic, and a wolf thrown in here and there."
