Since it is Iditarod time again, I thought it might be nice to relive those exciting days in 1994 when Malamutes ran the trail and proved that the breed could still do what it originally had been bred to do.
MALAMUTES IN THE 1994 IDITAROD
Nancy Russell, owner of Storm Kloud Kennel in Sussex, Wisconsin, dreamed of having an Iditarod team ever since the race started in 1973. Nancy met musher Jamie Nelson of Togo, Minnesota, at a freight race in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, in 1987. Shortly after, she sent two dogs to Jamie to be trained as lead dogs. In 1989, Nancy took a litter of six puppies to Jamie to develop into a team for promotional purposes. Jamie was impressed with the working ability of the Malamutes and the idea of an Iditarod team became a real possibility. By the fall of 1993, Jamie had 20 Malamutes in training and finally decided to enter the race. Because of the lateness of this decision, it was not possible to obtain commercial sponsors, so money was raised through mile sponsorships, the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, and several all-breed dog clubs. The remainder was paid by Storm Kloud Kennel.

Raven's Watch offers great equipment for dogs on the move, with owners looking for quality, custom made products at reasonable prices. Frequently Asked Questions: What is the difference between an x-back racing harness , and an H-back harness ? Can I use an x-back harness or a H-back harness for ski-joring as well as dogsledding, or roller blading?
Yes you can use either an x-back racing/recreational harness, or a H-back harness for all three sports as well as for bike-joring. The difference between an x-back harness and a H-back harness is the fit. H-back harness is better suited to long lean dogs.
What is the difference between a semi-slip collar and a buckle choke collar ? Does my dog need a correction collar? What is a flyball collar
A semi-slip or reduced choke collar, has a stop, this allows you to correct the dog without the collar continuously tightening. A semi slip collar is useful in teaching dogs not to back out of their collars. A buckle choke collar, can be either a full choke, or no choke, for training and everyday walking. Flyball collars have a handle built into them this collar is very useful for keeping your dog close when someone comes to the door.

Hi Gang, my name is Rivers!
For those of you who do not know me, I am a blind Iditarod racing sled dog, retired. I have been blind since 1997. Since then, I ran the Iditarod Race twice and helped a musher win the Junior Iditarod in 1999. I met my friend Mike in June 2000. It was a real chance meeting. It changed both of our lives, for the good. Mike took me to see Dr. Jim Gaarder , a great animal eye vet, because my eyeballs were so big. Frankly, I was in pain, but you know us dogs, we seldom let our human companions know. Mike wanted to know if I could ever see again. After a thorough exam, Dr. Jim said that my sight was gone for good. The important thing was to make me comfortable and make me pain free. A long time ago, I accepted the fact I was blind, with no chance that I would ever see again. For a while, I continued to race although I was blind. I want to race again. Mike knew I wanted to race, and he asked

Top of the Page Welcome to the web site of the Gold Rush Trail Sled Dog Association. Our group, which is centred in the Quesnel/Wells area of British Columbia was formally organized in 1994 after successfully staging a mid-distance sled dog race as a demonstration sport during the 1993 Northern B.C. Winter Games. The purposes of the society are:
  • The development of the use of dogs as pack and draft animals for sport and companionship through racing, rallies and demonstrations.
  • The safe, humane and knowledgeable treatment of dogs when used for these tasks.
  • The perpetuation of good sportsmanship among participants.
  • To encourage and promote amateur games and events.
  • To provide for the recreation of the members and to promote and afford opportunity for friendly activities, especially those involving winter sports and families.
  • The dissemination of information to members and the general public.
  • To affiliate with other associations having similar objectives.

98. Origin Of The Aurora Borealis
Written in the style of a Native American origin myth, this story nicely deals with the death of a beloved sled dog, linking their passing to the gaining a silver harness and racing in the skies as part of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis; while not directly sports related, deals with an important element of dog sports, the inevitable death of a canine companion

Origin of the Aurora Borealis
Tookla's magnificent head came up with a start. What was that? Another sound? Ears forward, Tookla's ice-blue eyes stared out from the doorway of his plywood doghouse. Getting up slowly he stretched luxuriously and moved carefully from the warmth of his hay filled house into the bitter chill of his fenced outdoor run. Standing still, Tookla alertly scanned the February afternoon landscape outside his run. Nothing. How many times now had he expectantly searched the surrounding area only to be disappointed? Walking to the end of his run, Tookla sat slowly down and heaved a great sigh. Sparkles of frost chased by shivery wintry blasts twirled through the air and landed on his thick warm coat. Half closing his eyes, Tookla began to think back to the old days, the good days. "It wasn't always like this," he thought to himself. "I used to go with my master and the team always. But no more. Not for a long time. My own son now has my place at the front of the team. Faster than me now. Much faster. Like I was faster than my father, Sabu. But I wasn't always faster than my father. I had to grow, to work so hard! Running back in the team with the others. Not for me. I didn't like that. Only after Sabu and my master taught me the words could I go in front. Then we were so fast! Soon I was even faster than father! Often I was at the front. I remember running through all those pine trees with the others, faster than ever! We flew down the trail."
