24. Introduction To Sled Dog Racing
It all begins with the International sled dog racing Association (ISDRA) Race Rules. ISDRArace rules are designed to safeguard sled dogs on and off the trail.
http://www.webheads.co.uk/sdcom/press/info/info1.htm
Introduction Fast, exciting, well trained sled dog teams are the result of careful behind the scenes planning and hard work. Successful mushers are knowledgeable in such diverse areas as kennel management, canine behavior, nutrition, veterinary care, psychology, physical conditioning, housing and transportation. Wise mushers soon learn that success or failure in any of these areas affects performance dramatically. Considering this fact it is obvious that the welfare of the dogs is of paramount importance. Team and driver develop a close, trusting relationship because of the amount of time they spend together. To betray that trust by not meeting all of the dog’s needs runs counter to the goal of having a happy, healthy, highly motivated team. What you see at a race is the result of long hours of work and planning to ensure that the team is prepared to test its abilities against the trail and the competition. WHAT MAKES SLED DOGS RUN?

25. History Of Sled Dog Racing
However, the same intimate relationship between driver and dog still existsand is demonstrated in the sport of sled dog racing. THE FIRST RACE.
http://www.webheads.co.uk/sdcom/press/info/003history.html
History of Racing The heritage of the sled dog is a long and proud one, stretching back thousands of years. The people of the North were dependent on these animals for protection, companionship, hunting, trapping, and, most of all transportation. Sled dogs enabled explorers such as Byrd, Peary, and Amundsen to explore the frozen wastelands of two continents and played a vital role in bringing civilization to the snowbound areas of the world. As early as 1873, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were bringing government to northern frontiers with dog-team patrols. Throughout Alaska and Canada, mail teams delivered the news to outlying settlements. One of the proudest chapters in sled dog history was written in 1925. In January of that year, a case of diphtheria was discovered in Nome, Alaska, and the supply of antitoxin in that city was inadequate to stave off an epidemic. A relay of 22 native and mail teams forged through the rough interior of Alaska and across the Bering Sea ice to bring the serum to a grateful citizenry. In New York City's Central Park stands a statue of Balto, who led one of the relay teams, commemorating the Nome Serum Run. The inscription reads: Dedicated to the indomitable Spirit of the sled dogs that relayed the antitoxin 600 miles over rough ice, treacherous waters; through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the winter of1925. Endurance. Fidelity. Intelligence.

Racing S Racing in the snow in Northumberland S led dogs enabled explorers such as Byrd, Peary and Amundsen to explore the frozen wasteland of two continents and played a vital role in bringing civilisation to the snowbound areas of the world. F ew of the inhabitants of the far North are dependent upon dogs for basic survival today. However, the same intimate relationship between man and dog still exists and is evidenced through the sport of sled dog racing. T here are four pure bred Sled Dog breeds, though only one, the Siberian Husky, is the breed likely to be seen at racing meetings. The Siberian breed was originally imported into Alaska for racing, and the sport soon became popular throughout North America, and very soon, Europe. The first huskies were imported into Britain in 1968 and the first rally was held in 1978. R acing sled dogs are among the best-cared for animals in the world. The sport is one based on athletic performance and, therefore, diet and physical fitness is always of the utmost importance. Spectators may be surprised at the dogs' lean appearance, but it should be remembered that an overweight dog, like an overweight person, is not fit and cannot run at a competitive pace. Click image to see big pic [35k] T he training of sled dogs begins at an early age over short distances. With age and experience distances increase, but at all times the welfare and enjoyment of the dogs is of primary concern.

Read these, they are the best info on the internet! Origin of the Alaskan Husky by Joe Runyan
The "Alaskan Husky" is a term so widely used by mushers and dog fanciers to describe a sled dog, that I presumed it would be an easy job to journalize the development and description of this unregistered breed of working dog. However, I soon discovered I was mistaken. Training Sled Dog Pups - An Annual Miracle by Joe Runyan Keeping Athletes at the Top of Their Game by David Draper
One only has to watch as mushers and dog handlers work to hitch up an experienced dog team at the start of the Iditarod to understand that the race means as much to the dogs as it does the racer. The uninitiated may be amazed at the raw power and excitement that each dog exhibits as the handler strains to get it in the harness.

34. Anduril Kennels, Sled Dog Team, Iditarod
Anduril Kennels' sled dog racing team plans to be an Iditarod 2000 competitor. The kennel is located in Southwest Montana.
http://members.aol.com/RobGreger/Sleddog.html
As competitive sled dog racing kennels go, Anduril has a very small number of dogs. Rob and Cara believe in quality, not quantity. They work with training, good nutrition, care, and love to make the most of each dog's potential. Because of their love of dogs and dedication to the sport of mushing, Rob and Cara make many public appearances and initiate programs for school children each year. Rob also works on the board of directors for The Race To The Sky. In the 94-95 race season, Rob and "the kids" (the dogs) placed in the top ten in four of the five races they entered. In the fifth race (in which they did not place in the top ten), they received the "Best Cared for Team" award. Rob competed in Montana's Race To The Sky 350-mile sled dog race in 1992, 1995 (placed 7th), 1996 (placed 2nd), 1997 (placed 14th), 1998 (placed 3rd), and 1999 (placed 7th). In 1998 Rob also raced in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in Minnesota, and finished in 11th place. He has also participated in many other races and placed well with the team. His sled dog racing is often "family vacation time," and a great time to get together with other friends/mushers.

is recognized as the "Winningest Musher in the World." His victories include not only the 1,049 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1993, 1996, and 1998, but also over two dozen first place finishes in races all across Alaska. During the past 20 years, Jeff has logged more than 100,000 miles on a dog sled.
Jeff moved to Alaska in 1975 in search of adventure. He quickly became interested in dog sledding and Alaska huskies, devoting all his spare time and money to building his own team, while developing a construction business. He began racing in 1980. His competitive nature had found a new outlet, and Jeff set his sights ever higher, entering his first Iditarod just one year later. In 1992 he decided to devote his full time and energy to training and racing, setting aside his construction business. He won his first Iditarod the following season. While on a training run in Denali National Park in 1980, Jeff's team became entangled with that of a new volunteer ranger, and thus he met his future wife. Donna Gates came to Denali after finishing her master's degree in Medical Illustration. She and Jeff married in 1983 and began developing their homestead on Goose Lake just south of the park entrance. The King family also includes three daughters
