The physics of skydiving By Clinton Myrick The purpose: The purpose of skydiving is simply for a total and complete rush of adrenaline that comes with risking your life. My Goal: To explain to you the physics of this thrilling sport. We begin our explanation of skydiving 10,000 feet in the air. We will use you as the skydiver and explain it from your standpoint. You stand up already strapped in and ready to jump. You step next to the door and the jump master tells you to jump. You step out of the plane and you feel the first and most important force in skydiving. Gravity . Gravity pulls you down toward the earth at -9.8 m/s this means that for every second you are in free fall you go 9.8 m/s faster. After three seconds you are falling at 29.4 m/s. Newtons second law says that f=ma . This means that your mass mutiplied by your acceleration you get a force. If your mass were 100 Kg and were in free fall you would experience a force of 980 newtons. The next force that affects you is air resistance Air resistance is the molecules in the air slamming into your body and causing drag as well as friction. Air resistance is determined by your surface area and your speed. The equation for air resistance is D=1/2(F1)(v)(v)(s)(cd).
