Skeleton of New Dinosaur "Titan" Found in Madagascar D.L. Parsell
National Geographic News
August 1, 2001
Some scientists who study dinosaurs spend a lifetime hoping to find the perfect trophy fossil. Kristina Curry Rogers, a 27-year-old graduate student at Stony Brook University in New York, got lucky. In 1998 she joined a team of researchers to help excavate and identify a vast trove of ancient bones that were being unearthed in northwestern Madagascar, where Stony Brook professor David Krause has led six fossil-hunting expeditions since 1993. "We dug into the hillside, and the more you dug, the more bones we found," she said. Once those bones were sorted out and identified, they offered an astonishing prize: the nearly complete skeleton of a young dinosaur that lived about 70 million years ago, when the last of the giant dinosaurs were at the height of their development. 145. NamibWeb.com - The Online Guide To Namibia: Skeleton Coast Park
skeleton Coast. As a result of the nutrientrich ocean off the skeleton Coast park, large numbers of sea and shore birds are attracted.
http://www.namibweb.com/skeleton.htm
Skeleton Coast Information on the one of Namibia's parks. The attraction of this remote area lies in the colour, changing moods and untouched profile of its landscape. Its aura of mystery and mightiness is largely due to the dense coastal fog and cold sea breezes caused by the cold Benguela ocean current from the Arctic, and bones scattered on its beaches from where the park's name derives.
The landscape in the park ranges from sweeping vistas of wind swept dunes to rugged canyons with walls of richly coloured volcanic rock and extensive mountain ranges. Its level coastline characterises the park, only occasionally broken by scattered rocky outcrops. The southern section consists of the gravel plains, but north of Terrace Bay high dunes occur in the immediate vicinity of the coast.
The remains of shipwrecks scattered along the coast bear witness to many ships, which have come to grief along these desolate shores.
The Ugab river is its southern boundary, and the park stretches north to the Kunene river. The park covers over 1.6 million hectares and divided into two zones - the southern section, between Ugab and Hoanib rivers, and the northern section - between the Hoanib and Kunene rivers. The latter has been demarcated as wilderness area and tourists can only enter the area by means of exclusive fly-in safaris conducted by a concessionaire. Of special interest are the clay castles of the Hoarisib, the salt pans near the Agate mountain and one of the largest seal colonies in the world at Cape Fria.

Skeleton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Skeleton is also a winter sport : see skeleton (sport) In biology , the skeleton or skeletal system is the biological system providing support in living organisms. (By extension, non-biological outline structures such as gantries or buildings may also acquire skeletons.) Skeletal systems are commonly divided into three types - external (an exoskeleton ), internal (an endoskeleton ), and fluid based (a hydrostatic skeleton ), though hydrostatic skeletal systems may be classified separately from the other two since they lack hardened support structures. Large external skeletal systems support proportionally less weight than endoskeletons of the same size, and thus many larger animals, such as the vertebrates , have internal skeletal systems. Examples of exoskeletons are found in arthropods and shellfish : the skeleton forms a hard shell -like covering protecting the internal organs.

Stegosaurus Skeleton
"Our full-sized major exhibit here is the fully articulated skeleton of Stegosaurus Stegosaurus was one of the earlier dinosaurs in the Jurassic age, and it stood about 9 feet tall with the plates, and about 20 feet long. Stegosaurus was a more primitive dinosaur, it had a very tiny head - you may notice the walnut there on the skull representing the size of the brain of Stegosaurus Stegosaurus had this double row of plates up his back, which scientists now believe was used for heating and cooling, as opposed to protection...a large rib cage indicates a very large stomach cavity there for the grinding up of plant matter, because Stegosaurus was also a herbivore. The larger rear legs indicate that Stegosaurus could probably rear up on his hind legs, and his major protection was the spiked or clubbed tail that you see there."
Baby Hypselosaurus Sculpture
"We do have, in the glass case here as well, a 100 million-year-old dinosaur egg of a dinosaur called a Hypselosaurus , which was a small-scale version of a Brontosaurus . It stood about 40 feet in length at full size. This egg was acquired from France and is one of the largest and best-preserved of dinosaur eggs. We wanted to give our visitors an idea of what the dinosaur might have looked like that was inside of it, so we had a sculpture commissioned there of a

Straight skeleton of a simple polygon
Franz Aurenhammer
The straight skeleton of a simple polygon is defined by shrinking the polygon by translating each of its edges at a fixed rate, keeping sharp corners at the reflex vertices, and watching where the vertices go. The straight skeleton is quite similar to the medial axis; in fact, the two are equivalent for convex polygons. However, the straight skeleton of a nonconvex polygon has fewer edges than the medial axis, and all its edges are line segments; the medial axis also has parabolic arcs around each reflex vertex. On the other hand, unlike the medial axis, the straight skeleton is not a Voronoi diagram in any sense. The straight skeleton can be used to construct a polygonal roof over a set of ground walls [1], reconstruct a geographical terrain from a river map, or define a pattern of of folds that will make all the edges of a paper polygon colinear (although this last property is true of other "bisector graphs" [1] as well; see also [6]). The definition of straight skeleton can be generalized to arbitrary planar straight line graphs [2], where it has (potential) applications to planar motion planning, and to three-dimensional polyhedra, where it has potential applications to solid modelling. Although the medial axis can be constructed in linear time [3], the fastest known algorithms for stright skeletons are much slower. The main difficulty is that changing the positions or angles of reflex vertices has a significant non-local effect on the skeleton. This nonlocality makes techniques such as incremental construction or divide-and-conquer fail. The following table lists the time and space bounds of various algorithms. Here

GORP Namibia DESTINATIONS Animals of the Skeleton Coast Adapted to a Desert Habitat Part I - Fauna of the River Courses Excerpted from The Skeleton Coast by Amy Schoeman To the uninitiated the wealth of fauna at the Skeleton Coast comes as a revelation. The river courses with their relatively rich supply of food and water sustain large species such as elephant, giraffe, black rhino and lion, as well as many smaller species, while springbok, ostrich and gemsbok are characteristic of the plains. Utilizing windblown detritus from the interior as food and ocean fog as moisture, a remarkable community of interdependent dune-dwelling insects, reptiles and small mammals with specialized adaptations has evolved in the dunes. Thermoregulation, coloration, breeding strategies and nomadism have ensured the survival of a surprising variety of desert birds. Coastal birds find their sustenance in the rich plankton and pelagic resources of the Benguela Current, which also supports several seal colonies, while the beaches are kept clean by ghost crabs, jackal and brown hyena. Fauna of the River Courses The animals which frequent the dry riverbeds of the Skeleton Coast are not necessarily typical desert fauna, in that they have regular access to water from spring-fed water holes and feed on vegetation which also occurs in the interior. The larger species such as elephant, lion and black rhino move up and down the dry riverbeds, often increasing in numbers when food becomes scarce in the interior.
