Baby skeletons found in Japan apartment
TOKYO, Japan The remains of six babies have been found in a closet by cleaners working in a rental apartment near Tokyo. Japanese newspapers on Monday reported the discovery in Toda, north of Tokyo. The cleaners, tidying up the apartment after tenants moved out at the end of March, found six skeletons on the top shelf of a closet, five of them in a large plastic bag and the other in a plastic case, the reports said. Their sex and the cause of death were not known, newspapers said. Police officials believe the babies died immediately after birth and had been dead for several months. A man and woman had lived in the apartment until the end of March, reported Tokyo's Mainichi Shimbun. Police are now searching for the couple.

The Human Skeleton
The skeleton is the armature and the understructure which defines the human body. Leonardo da Vinci realized the importance of the skeleton which he sketched over and over. The Skeletal Structure One can use elements from the underlying structure of the body to draw more proportionate figures. The best way to use the skeleton is to first draw the skeleton from different views. Then look for places where the skeleton is evident when drawing the figure.
  • The skull has the same proportions as the head. One can find the eye sockets halfway between the top of the head and the chin.
  • The collar bone (clavicle) protrudes enough that it is easy to see when drawing the figure.
  • The shoulder blades (scapulae) are also easy to discern in the upper half of the back. The shoulder blades are important to activate and add interest to the back which has very subtle variations.
  • The top edge of the pelvic bone (iliac crest) shows up to give an indication of the placement of the legs and lower torso.
  • The knee (patella) and ankle bone (inferior extremity of the tibia) both protrude enough for careful observation.

A HISTORY OF THE SKELETON "It is very clearly apparent from the admonitions of Galen how great is the usefulness of a knowledge of the bones, since the bones are the foundation of the rest of the parts of the body and all the members rest upon them and are supported, as proceeding from a primary base. Thus if any one is ignorant of the structure of the bones it follows necessarily that he will be ignorant of very many other things along with them." Niccolo Massa, 1559 Physicians from antiquity through the Renaissance discussed the form and function of the skeleton, as the hardest part of the body. Beginning with Galen, the investigations of the skeleton followed a certain pattern. Physicians were primarily impressed with the hardness of the bone and saw its necessity for the structural integrity of the body. Galen observed: "To protect the system completely, it was better for it to consist of many bones, and further, of bones just as hard as they are ... Nature consequently did not merely entrust its defense to the skin, as she did for the parts in the abdomen, but first, before the skin was put on, she invested it with bone like a helmet." This perspective is fully evident in medieval images of the skeleton that emphasize its ability to shape the body. Look below to see how the skeleton appears in the late Middle Ages.

Skeletonization/Medial Axis Transform
Common Names: Skeletonization, Medial axis transform
Brief Description
Skeletonization is a process for reducing foreground regions in a binary image to a skeletal remnant that largely preserves the extent and connectivity of the original region while throwing away most of the original foreground pixels. To see how this works, imagine that the foreground regions in the input binary image are made of some uniform slow-burning material. Light fires simultaneously at all points along the boundary of this region and watch the fire move into the interior. At points where the fire traveling from two different boundaries meets itself, the fire will extinguish itself and the points at which this happens form the so called `quench line'. This line is the skeleton. Under this definition it is clear that thinning produces a sort of skeleton. Another way to think about the skeleton is as the loci of centers of bi-tangent circles that fit entirely within the foreground region being considered. Figure 1 illustrates this for a rectangular shape.

Baby Neanderthal skeleton rediscovered
Newborn's remains were lost to science for nearly a century
TALENCE, France (CNN) A French researcher has found a skeleton of a Neanderthal baby that was first discovered in 1914 near Le Moustier, in southwestern France, but was lost in a museum for more than 80 years. Bruno Maureille, of the University of Bordeaux in Talence, said that the skeleton, called Le Moustier 2, is nearly complete. It's missing just its shoulder blades and pubic bone, making it one of the most complete Neanderthal skeletons ever found. Scientists believe it is the remains of a 4-month-old newborn, who died about 40,000 years ago. "The rediscovery of Le Moustier 2 is more than an interesting story. It is an exceptional discovery, maybe the most important in France (in) 30 years," said Maureille. "It will have fundamental consequence on our knowledge about Neanderthals and their phylogenetic relationships with modern humans." Maureille found the remains inside the National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies, France, in 1996. Until that time, paleontologists had thought the skeleton had been sent to a museum in Paris in the early 1920s, and subsequently lost.

Manage alerts What is this? WASHINGTON (CNN) You find out lots of scary stuff about the candidates in a campaign. Especially on Halloween, when we ask each candidate, what skeletons do you have in YOUR closet? How's this for a skeleton in the closet? In 1983 and 1984, John Kerry was Michael Dukakis' lieutenant governor. Ooh ... pretty scary, huh boys and girls? The skeleton in Carol Moseley Braun's closet is a man named Kgosie Matthews. He was her one-time campaign manager and fiance who was accused of campaign finance improprieties and setting up the senator's ill-advised trip to Nigeria to visit that country's dictator, for whom Matthews had once lobbied. A lot of Democrats don't want to be reminded of Al Gore's 2000 campaign. One of them may be Joe Lieberman. Lieberman went on CNN's "Inside Politics" in July and said, "Rhetoric which suggests class conflict and anti-business kept away from our side some number of middle-class people who don't see America as 'the people versus the powerful.'"

CHAPTER 46, SECTION 2, THE SKELETON SYSTEM
THE SKELETON SYSTEM STUDY GUIDE

REVIEW OF THE SKELETON SYSTEM
SECTION 46-2, SKELETAL SYSTEM The adult human body consists of approximately 206 bones, which are organized into an internal framework called the SKELETON . Because the human skeleton is an internal structure, biologists refer to it as an ENDOSKELETON . The variation in size and shape among the bones that make up the skeleton reflects their different roles in the body. OBJECTIVES: Identify the major bones of the skeletal system (Figure 46-3 and Handout) Distinguish between the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Explain the function and structure of bone. Summarize how bones develop and elongate. List three classes of joints, describe the action of each and give an example of each. Describe a common disorder that affects the skeletal system. THE SKELETON 1. In order to retain their SHAPE and FORM, Living Things need some type of support. 2. In Single-Celled Organisms, this support is provided by the Cell Membrane.

SAN FRANCISCO DIGGIN'S Digging in downtown San Francisco was a bottle digger's, coin and relic hunters dream come true in the mid 1960s through the late 1970s. The Great Bottle Rush in San Francisco got it's start in the Golden Gateway Redevelopment project which today is home for the Embarcadero Center. But, that was only one phase of many demolition and excavations to take place within the Yerba Buena cove extending from as far as Sacramento and Drumm Streets (Justin Herman Plaza) on and north to the foot of North Point and Kearney Streets in the Fisherman's Wharf area. The major excavations started in the areas of Drumm, Sacramento and Clay, Davis, Sansome, Front and Battery Streets. THE GOLDSHIP "NIANTIC" One historic dig site that I was fortunate to have gotten on and I will never forget, though it was the last of the great "digs" during the month of May, 1978 is of the goldship Niantic, buried fifteen to twenty feet below street level at the intersection of Clay and Sansome Streets just below the Transamerica pyramid in the financial district. The Niantic was one of the earliest gold ships to arrive in San Francisco in early days of the Sierra gold rush. She was left abandoned as the miners took off for the gold country in high hopes of making their fortune. As time went by, the Niantic was I managed to get a few champagne bottles that were packed in straw and still contained champagne though slightly diluted from sea water working it's way in past the wired corks.

THE BIGFOOT DROPPING:
This exhibit explains Dr. Gladstone's approved method of Finding the Bigfoot Dropping, and shows the tools and techniques he has devised especially for this purpose. The exhibit explains: 1- A generous amount of lubricant is squirted into the suspected dropping site (a patch of fur) with the Lubricant Injector . 2- When the dropping emerges, it is grasped with the Dropping Extractor Tongs, and carefully withdrawn. Another sign warns: "Try not to disturb the Bigfoot". "FINDING THE BIGFOOT DROPPING" - 1974 ceramic, on painted wood, fur, grease 24" X 36" X 12" COMPARATIVE ANATOMY The Triple-Jointed Bigfoot Penis is nature's perfect birth control device. Human males have a single penile bone; whereas Bigfoot has a triple-jointed bone that can make a "U" turn, and deposit its sperm outside the female. This handy and efficient form of birth control explains the rarity of Bigfoot today. The triple jointed penis also suggests that Bigfoot was able to engage in athletic mating practices without damaging the bone, and this inspired the creature's scientific name, "Giganticus Erectus Robustus ". Peter Byrne, the former Director of the International Wildlife Conservation Society in Washington, D.C., commends Gladstone in 1975, saying; "Keep up with the good work. The world needs more people like you, and we are behind you 100%."
