Meet "Yorick", the Bionic Skeleton
Yorick is a "bionic" skeleton. Bionic means electronic devices and mechanical parts (called medical devices or implants) are used in place of real body parts that are damaged or that no longer work. These devices can actually help people perform normal, everyday tasks.
Where is Yorick?
Yorick was created as a teaching aid to demonstrate how these medical devices work. He used to travel frequently and appear at schools, professional meetings, university lectures, training courses and health fairs to educate kids and adults. In November 2003, Yorick 'retired' from FDA. He became part of a museum display called 'Inventing Ourselves.' The display is in the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
What are medical devices?
People use medical devices when they have lost the use of a real body part, because of injury in an accident or damage from a disease. For example, a person who loses an arm in an accident might get a replacement arm that will still allow him to eat, lift things, throw a ball, or tie his shoes. And there are even people who need a whole new replacement body part, such as an artificial heart, in order to live.

Zooarchaeology Comparative Databases
Search the Zooarchaeology Comparative Collections: Birds Bivalves Crustaceans Fishes ... Mammals The Zooarchaeology Comparative Collection is one of four collections within the Environmental Archaeology program: Scholars who would like to use this collection for research should contact either Dr. Kitty Emery ( kemery ) or Sylvia J. Scudder ( scudder ). Please add "@flmnh.ufl.edu" to the end of "kemery" or "scudder" for the full email address. In addition to the Zooarchaeology Comparative Collection the FLMNH houses three collections catalogued in the Environmental Archaeology Program. This program began with the Zooarchaeology Collection and with the primary research tool for all zooarchaeological research, the Zooarchaeology Comparative Collection, both initiated in 1961. These were followed by the Archaeobotanical Collection started in 1986 by Lee Newsom and monitored today by Donna Ruhl, and the Archaeological Soils Collection started in 1991 by Sylvia Scudder. The addition of these last two collections transformed the former zooarchaeology program into its present broader scope, the Environmental Archaeology Program. Computerization of the data integral to these collections is an important management and research tool. As soon as this is completed these databases will be included on the internet. At the present time the collection databases that you will find on the internet are for the Zooarchaeology Comparative Collection.

    Macaroni Skeleton
This macaroni skeleton is not only fun to make and cute, but can be a real educational project at the same time. This project is rated EASY to do. What You Need
    • Black construction paper (approximately 6" x 11.5")
    • Glue that will dry clear
    • Lima beans (head, thorax, hips)
    • Short, small macaroni in a tube (spine)
    • Thin twisted macaroni (arms, legs)
    • Elbow noodles (ribs)
    • Small shells (joints)
    • Spaghetti (fingers, toes)
    • Black permanent marker
    • White crayon to write their name on the paper

    How To Make It
As preparation for this project, study the human skeleton. Talk about symmetry between the two sides of the body, how many ribs, fingers, and toes we have. The skeleton to the right was made by a 2nd grader. Make a sample skeleton for the children to copy from. Review the key features with them. Let them build their skeleton, starting with the head, then the neck/trunk, working down, gluing the macaroni and beans to the paper. When they are done, they can draw a smile and eyes on the 'head'.

  • Tristan Gale starts the run in which she finished first in the Olympic skeleton trials in Park City, Utah, in December. Skeleton on ice Two members of the U.S. Olympic team discuss what it takes to win in one of the Winter Games' most dangerous events, where competitors shoot headfirst down an ice track at autobahn speeds. By Dimitra Kessenides Soule started racing in the skeleton event 10 years ago. Gale was a ski racer until four years ago when she got a taste of sliding. "Someone who hasn't done this can do it; it just depends on how scared they are of the speed," Gale says. "If you know you're definitely scared of speed, there's no way you'll ever like this. Because it doesn't slow down at all, it only gets faster." document.write('');

Who's Doing This? 1996 Candidates Bill Clinton Bob Dole H. Ross Perot Ralph Nader ... Libertarians Other Politicians Gen. Colin Powell Pete Wilson John Ashcroft B-1 Bob Dornan ... Jesse Jackson Two years ago, the conventional wisdom was that Al Gore was a squeaky clean, if dull policy wonk who would be a shoo-in to succeed Clinton in a country weary of Bill's various scandals. Now, after 2 years of almost continuous scandals of his own most concerning his relentless fundraising activities it was a major break for Prince Albert when his own party's Attorney General decided not to sic a special prosecutor on him. Here's the real question: is Al Gore corrupt compared to other politicians? Or is he just a run of the mill hack? One thing is, like several of this year's candidates (notably George W. Bush), Gore has grown up in that protected, distorted world of wealth and privilege that makes it so difficult for him to understand normal people and normal life. That's not a "scandal", really, but it makes it hard to be sure how he will react ina crisis, and that is the most important role our president's have.

Aardvark, Orycteropus afer Order Tubulidentata, Family Orycteropodidae Aardvarks are pig-sized animals that specialise in ant-eating especially termites. The skeleton is characteristic of a powerful scratch digger i.e. an animal that is able to exert force on soil or clay in order to dislodge it for digging, burrowing or feeding purposes. Typically the limbs are short and armed with powerful claws. The animal is able to secure its position with the tripod arrangement of its hindlimbs with plantigrade stance and a thick tail acting as a brace. Click on the skeleton above for more information on skeletal parts or click on the words below: Skull forelimb hindlimb , pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, caudal region Specimen length from nose tip to tail = 1.21 metres, height (up to top of lumbar vertebrae) = 0.4m.
