The Skeleton Chattering finch and water-fly Are not merrier than I; Here among the flowers I lie Laughing everlastingly. No; I may not tell the best; Surely, friends, I might have guessed Death was but the good King's jest, It was hid so carefully. G.K. CHESTERTON

69. Adventure In Namibia
Brief information on the Etosha National Park, the Caprivi Strip, Fish River Canyon, skeleton Coast Park and the NamibNaukluft Park.
http://www.geographia.com/namibia/namib02.htm
Exploring Namibia Namibia Homepage Africa Homepage Geographia Home Namibia's many parks and game reserves are of two basic types. Some, such as well-known Etosha National Park, are like most southern African parks focused primarily on wildlife. Others, including the coastal parks and Fish River Canyon, are are spectacular wilderness areas, where the beauty of the scenery easily upstages the game. The descriptions that follow are for only a selected few of Namibia's many fine parks. Etosha National Park Etosha is Namibia's premier big game park, comparable in size and diversity of species to any other reserve on the continent. It is especially renowned for its abundant population of elephants, though in fact it contains sizeable populations of an enormous variety of species. Many different antelope species, including gemsbok, impala, dik-dik, springbok, eland, kudu, and duiker, are here, as are wildebeest, hartebeest, and zebra. Lion, leopard, and cheetah are also found in Etosha, and giraffe and rhino as well. What draws all of these creatures to Etosha is water. At the center of Etosha Park is the enormous shallow bowl of the Etosha Pan, a depression that was once a lakebed. Although the pan does fill with water during periods of unusually heavy rainfall, the watersource on which the wildlife depend is a series of underground springs that dot the pan's perimeter. If you visit between May and September, when the pan is quite dry, the temperature cool, and the wildlife thirsty, the contrast between the barren landscape and the concentration of animals can be stunning.

71. The Mammal Skeleton
The Mammalian skeleton. This is what we call a skeleton. The basic plan of the mammalian skeleton, as seen above, is fairly straight forward.
http://www.earthlife.net/mammals/skeleton.html
The Mammalian Skeleton
Mammals are vertebrates by definition, this means that all mammals have an internal bony support structure to which muscles and ligaments are attached. This is what we call a skeleton. The basic plan of the mammalian skeleton, as seen above, is fairly straight forward. It consists of a head at one end of a vertebral column from which extend ribs to support the working organs and four limbs for locomotion. The vertebral column ends in a tail. The huge range of lifestyles and habitats utilised by mammals means that a great deal of variety exists between different groups. Some species lack a tail, others lack apparent hind limbs and the skull is very variable. Here I am going to give you a general outline of the mammalian skeleton with some notes to indicate particular variations. To understand the skeleton fully you should also have a look at the page on Bones and Joints
The Skull
The vertebrate skull in general and the mammal skull in particular is a complex amalgam of bones, not just one or two but about 34 bones, if they all are present, make up the skull and lower jaw. Most of these bones are now fused together though anyone who has looked carefully at a mammal skull will have notices the crinkly lines where the once individual bones meet. Most of them come in pairs, one each side. The skull can be divided into 3 basic parts; the Braincase (enclosing the brain); the Rostrum (the snout and upper jaw); the Lower Jaw.

(photos courtesy of Greg White) Faculty and students alike benefit when the time-honored separation of schools, divisions, and departments is replaced by interdisciplinary approaches to training and problem-oriented research. "Zooarchaeology" is a perfect example, a subfield of archaeology that provides a melding between anthropology and the biological sciences centering around the identification and interpretation of animal remains from archaeological sites. Archaeological sites, ranging from nineteenth century city blocks or Gold Rush camps to prehistoric Native American villages or hunting sites, often contain animal remains, usually in the form of fragmented pieces of bone or shell. The identification and analysis of these materials can help reconstruct past human-environment relationships, such as the economics of animal exploitation, the nature of past environments, or even some very specific kinds of paleoecological connections. Frank Bayham, (Ph.D. Arizona State University, 1982), joined the CSU, Chico Anthropology Department faculty in 1985, introducing an interdisciplinary approach to zooarchaeol-ogy that has developed through the years to become a major centerpiece of the archaeological studies program. Under Bayham's guidance, two major components have been developed: the Zooarchaeology Lab and the Zooarchaeology and Field Ecology Field School at Eagle Lake.

79. Skeletal System
The skeleton is the name given to the collection of bones that holds the rest of our body up. Our skeleton is very important to us. It does three major jobs.
http://users.tpg.com.au/users/amcgann/body/skeletal.html
The Skeleton is the name given to the collection of bones that holds the rest of our body up. Our skeleton is very important to us. It does three major jobs.
  • It protects our vital organs such as the brain, the heart and the lungs.
It gives us the shape that we have. Without our skeleton, we would just be a blob of blood and tissue on the floor.
It allows us to move. Because our muscles are attached to our bones, when our muscles move, they move the bones, and we move.
  • When you were born, your skeleton had around 350 bones. By the time you become an adult, you will only have around 206 bones. This is because, as you grow, some of the bones join together to form one bone. Our bones don't simply work on their own. The bones join together to form joints. The end of each bone is covered by a tough, smooth shiny substance called cartilage. The cartilage-coated bone-ends are kept apart by a thin film of slippery fluid that works like oil in a car. All of this is so your bones won't scratch and bump against each other when you move. Our bones are held together by strong stretchy bands called ligaments. (Click to view the larger image) (Click to view the larger image) Inside a Bone Old bones are dead, dry and brittle. But in the body, bones are very much alive. They have their own nerves and blood vessels, and they do various jobs, such as storing body minerals.
