Welcome to Bespoke Skeleton Clocks
Presenting our clock to commemorate the new millennium.
This clock is a combination of the many skills of our team and also a piece of the past.
The Six tune music box in the base is an old movement we found in a distressed condition. This was totally rebuilt with the damaged bells being replaced, retuned and the hammer array tails remodelled. The frame and music box case was a particularly demanding challenge, created by our artist, as an exercise in piercing. All our clock frames and wheels are hand pierced. The clock strikes the full hours and plays a tune after the strike is finished. There is a choice of two bells. The original bell was glass but we decided to provide a traditional bell as an alternative.

Our clockmaker was trained at West Dean College in 1978, specialising in antique clock restoration. Since then he has collected a wealth of knowledge in the art of clock-making, and in particular the craft of designing and constructing Skeleton Clocks. Working from premises in the south of England he has also gathered a team of individual craftsmen to assist in achieving the end product.

Zooarchaeology Laboratory and Reference Collection
The Zooarchaeology Reference Collection consists of over 700 animal skeletons of Alberta and arctic vertebrate species, domesticates, and a small number of mollusc specimens. Many of the species are represented by a variety of specimens including both sexes and different ages from foetal through juvenile and adult to very aged individuals. The specimens show various degrees of health with some interesting pathological lesions . Click here for more info on Zooarch specimens The Reference collection is used by researchers for the identification of faunal remains found during Archaeological excavations. The collection also represents an excellent, well-rounded resource for teaching and is used by introductory and more advanced courses. Courses with a Zooarchaeology component can hold labs and lectures in the Zooarchaeology Collection Laboratory. The collection has an active volunteer program . We are indebted to the enthusiastic students that support and assist in the Zooarchaeology Collection. The collection is actively growing and there are processing facilities in the Department for preparing skeletal material from dissection to final preparation. Trade with other institutions for suitable specimens to expand the collection is encouraged. Contact the Technologist by email for a list of trade items.

Home Page Biology Chemistry Physics ... Contact Us YOUR SKELETON Printable Worksheet WHAT IS YOUR SKELETON? Your skeleton is a bony framework of about 206 bones. WHAT DOES YOUR SKELETON DO? Your skeleton keeps you upright and provides support for your body. It also provides a tough barrier to protect delicate organs such as your brain. Muscles are attached to bones which contract and relax and allow you to move. The Skeleton System Now have a look at some bones. The bone in your head is called your skull or cranium and is used to protect your brain. Your backbone, also known as your spine keeps you upright and protects your spinal cord. This is your most important bone. It is made up of 33 bones called vertebrae. These are separated from each other by tiny pads of gristle called cartilage. The collar bones and shoulder blades act as attachments for muscles at the front and back of your chest. Twelve pairs of ribs protect your heart and lungs. Your pelvis is a thick ring of bone which encloses and protects some of the parts of your lower abdomen.

Italian Skeletons Reveal Old World Diseases By Rossella Lorenzi, Discovery News Columbus: Syphilis Spreader? April 12, 2004 Involving various sites throughout Italy, the study examined 688 skeletons dating from the Bronze Age to the Black Plague epidemic of 1485-1486. The remains were investigated for the presence of bony alterations characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis, gout, spondyloarthropathy and syphilis-causing organisms, called treponemes.

  • Indeed, syphilis is known to scar and deform bones. Legend holds that Columbus and his crew contracted syphilis in the New World and caused an outbreak in Europe. "Prior to Columbus, Italy was like a virgin. Rheumatoid arthritis and syphilis were not present, further supporting the contention that they are New World-derived diseases," Bruce Rothschild, the paleopathologist at the Arthritis Center of Northeast Ohio who carried the study, told Discovery News. The research matches Rothschild's previous studies, which found no evidence of syphilis in the Old World before Columbus. However, 687 skeletons from eight different populations in the New World, ranging in age from 400 to 6,000 years old, displayed signs of syphilis in bones that were at least 800 years old.

    An Electronic Textbook on
    The Human Skeleton
By Lena Marie Rossi Graphic source: BBC Education: Kids Health - Bones
At birth the human skeleton is made up of 275 different bones. As the body matures some of these bones, such as wrist and ankle bones, fuse together leaving only 206 bones in the adult body. The skeleton is the internal structure that holds the human body up and with the help of the muscular system allows us to move. The human skeleton also works to protect the delicate and vital organs found inside it from being damaged. There are two major systems of bones in the human body, the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton is comprised of the 80 bones in the skull, ribs, and sternum. The appendicular skeleton has 126 bones from the shoulders, pelvis, and attached limbs. Each bone is comprised of three major sections, the compact bone, the soft bone marrow, and the sponge bone. The soft bone marrow is found within the hollow center of the bone - this is where red blood cells are produced. Even though human bones appear to be quite strong they can experience dislocations and fractures. A dislocation occurs when a bone is pushed out of its socket by a sudden unexpected pressure such as a fall. Dislocated bones often require a quick reverse pressure to realign them in the socket. Fractures, actual breaks in the bone, can be quite serious and can take anywhere from a month to six months to heal depending on which bone is involved.
