Discussion of structural issues for sauropod skeletons at Talk.Origins.

Sauropods, Elephants, Weightlifters
Structural Issues
by Wayne Throop [Text Last Updated: June 27, 1995] [Links Updated: March 27, 2003] Ted has advanced arguments on two areas of sauropod structure:
Limbs
Ted has traditionally dismissed that any difference in limb structure between human and sauropod could be a significant factor. We can at least partly quantify that amount of leverage. It would be the ratios of the Holden Numbers of the two cases. Thus, We can see that the maximum projected mass in 1g goes up as the cube of this leverage factor. Further note that the sauropod limbs don't need to be as heavily muscled as Kazmaier's, because the sauropod has four limbs and Kazmaier is employing only two. Thus the above is assuming limbs far less muscular than Kazmaier's. In fact, given that leverage factor, each limb would need only half the muscle cross section compared to Kazmaier's leg. And finally, note that Ted's estimate of 360,000 lbs mass for ultrasaur is distinctly larger than any currently accepted figure. It was done via linear projection of a few vertebrae, not even a remotely complete skeleton, and in [tD] and [KoC],

This document is work in progress and still in an early stage. Your suggestions is welcome [ forum In this document I will descripe how to embed the ruby interpreter into c++ [ WhyEmbedRuby? EmbedRuby ] and provide you with a skeleton you easily can build upon. We want to share some of our classes between c++ and ruby, so that no difference can be feelt. This task is non-trivial and therefore the basic concepts needs to be explained. In this text we will accomplish the following:
  • c++ classes accessable from ruby. ruby classes accessable from c++. translate exceptions between ruby and c++. let SWIG do all the hard work for us.
I am assuming that the reader has some experience with writing ruby extensions, has an understanding of UML diagrams. No previous experience with SWIG is required. This code should work with G++3, GNU-make, Ruby-1.8.0. For the [Combining Everything] you might need GNU-autoconf, SWIG-1.3.18. Please share your experiences, this might help others! comments, suggestions, reviews, bugs, bugfixes, code. All kinds of contributions is welcome :-)

What would happen if humans didn't have bones?

You'd be floppy like a beanbag. Could you stand up? Forget it. Could you walk? No way. Without bones you'd be just a puddle of skin and guts on the floor.
Bones have two purposes. Some, like your backbone, provide the structure which enables you to stand erect instead of lying like a puddle on the floor. Other bones protect the delicate, and sometimes soft, insides of your body. Your skull, a series of fused bones, acts like a hard protective helmet for your brain. The bones, or vertebrae, of your spinal column surround your spinal cord, a complex bundle of nerves. Imagine what could happen to your heart and lungs without the protective armor of your rib cage!
How many bones do humans have?

Hyracotherium This small dog-sized animal represents the oldest known horse. It had a primitive short face, with eye sockets in the middle and a short diastema (the space between the front teeth and the cheek teeth). Although it has low-crowned teeth, we see the beginnings of the characteristic horse-like ridges on the molars. Hyracotherium is better known as "eohippus" - which means "the dawn horse." The name also refers to the fact that it lived during the Eocene.
