Crime Guidelines TopContent(content); Bradenton shuffleboard battle brewing Tuesday, May 4, 2004 Area shuffleboarders have used the courts for 75 years. A group of shuffleboarders is fighting to knock the city of Bradenton off its courts. The city owns the courts on Ninth Avenue West and 14th Street West and has leased the land to the Bradenton Shuffleboard Club for the past 75 years. However, city employees are now considering selling the property to developers, devastating longtime gamers like Raymond Senf and his wife Rosemary. "This would just hurt us so bad," said Raymond Senf. The Bradenton Shuffleboard Club has several hundred members, and the local facility is one of the most popular ones in the state. Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston says in no way is he trying to push shuffleboarders out of the city, but adds that the property their courts sit on is worth at least $700,000. He wants to sell the land and relocate the shuffleboarders. "We feel that this site is no longer the best site for that (shuffleboarding)," said Poston. "We're really trying to help them." | |
