DRESSAGE JUMPING History of the Saddle
There are two main types of horse saddles, the Hungarian and the Moorish. The Moorish saddle, which was used extensively by cowboys in the United States, has a horn which is essential in using the lasso. To hold it in place under the strain of the lasso, this saddle has two strong girths, each tightened by a cinch strap. The Hungarian saddle, of which the English saddle is an example, the McClellan saddle, and the racing saddle have no horns. The English saddle has padding, and the stirrup is hung farther forward than on the Moorish saddle or the McClellan saddle, neither of which is padded. For constant use, the hard saddle is believed in North America to be better for both the horse and the rider. The padded saddle has advantages in brief and occasional rides.

Nottingham, UK, March 3, 2004 - The British Show Jumping Association is the governing body of show jumping in Great Britain, formulating the rules and codes of practice under which all affiliated competitions are held. Founded in 1925 and operating from the National Agricultural Centre at Stoneleigh, their purpose is to improve and maintain standards of show jumping, whilst encouraging members of all standards and at all levels to enjoy fair competition over safe and attractive courses. They manage more than 2,000 shows each year providing in excess of 2,800 days of show jumping for members of the Association riding registered horses and ponies. The BSJA could be described as working within the service industry as every horse and rider has to be registered before they are allowed to compete. This means that the Membership and Registration department must process the 17,000 memberships as well as all the horse and pony registrations. The show department affiliates over 3,800 show days a year to the BSJA. The need to deal more efficiently with the incoming calls from its members meant that the BSJA decided to review its entire communications strategy. All calls were being answered by the receptionist then manually transferred to the relevant extension. The volume of calls coming in meant that service levels were deteriorating.

Show Jumping
Show jumping is a relatively young sport, which tests the skill of horse and rider in negotiating obstacles that are easily knocked down. It was accepted into the Olympic Games in 1912. Frederico Caprilli (1868-1907) who pioneered the 'forward seat' laid the foundations for the sport, as a horse carrying the full weight of his rider on his back will be inclined to drag or drop his hind legs over a fence. Show jumping is conducted either indoors or outdoors over artificial fences that fall down easily. The aim is to jump the course within the time allowed (which is not fast) without knocking down any fences. Faults are awarded for a knockdown (4), or a refusal. Those who go clear jump-off, over a course that may be shortened in length or increased in height, to decide a winner, or the winner may be decided on the fastest round with the least number of faults. If two or more are equal, there may be another jump-off.
Show jumping is run under the rules of the governing organisation (in UK, the BSJA) that is affiliated to the national body(in the UK, the BEF) represented on the Fédéderation Equestre Internationale (FEI). Horses are graded on results at 'affiliated' shows. Unaffiliated shows and classes are run at local level for newcomers to the sport.

The 2004 Series kicked off in February and continues through November, culminating in a Year-End Championship to be held at the National Horse Show. The Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, hosted the first three Show Jumping Hall of Fame Series competitions of the year. Following these events, Brianne Goutal and Onira held an early lead in the junior division in the East Conference, while Charlie Jacobs and Innocence were in first place in the amateur-owner division. The West Conference will begin at the Oaks Blenheim Spring Classic I in San Juan Capistrano, CA, in April. Series points awarded in any class are prorated based upon the amount of prize money offered.

SHOW JUMPING
Show jumping takes place in nearly every country around the globe. It also enjoys the status of an Olympic sport. This equestrian sport now boasts easily understandable rules, although in the past points were given for style, and deducted for minor offences such as touching the fence rail without actually knocking it down. The simple rules instituted 50-odd years ago have made show jumping easy to follow, which allows first-time spectators to enjoy the sport as much as seasoned fans. The penalties are as follows: Show Jumping Penalties Knockdown - 4 faults. Foot in the Water - 4 faults. First Refusal (Disobedience) - 3 faults. Second Refusal - Elimination. Fall of Horse or Rider or Both - Elimination. Show jumping events are also timed. A certain amount of time is allotted for the completion of the course, and extra time spent will lead to further penalties. Time is also used to help determine the winner when there is a tie in the number of faults. The fastest round wins. Most show jumping events require the horses and riders to prove they can clear the big fences before they are tested against the clock.
