Show jumping
Show jumping is a form of competition in which horses are jumped over a course of fences, low walls, and other obstacles (e.g., water-filled ditches or troughs). The horses are allowed a certain number of refusals, but 3 fault points are added to their score for each one. If they take more than the time allowed for the course, they earn 1/4 fault for each extra second. For every pole that is knocked down, 4 faults are earned. The final rankings are based on the lowest number of points accumulated. In case of a draw, the horse with the fastest time ranks higher. The History Of Showjumping Showjumping is a relativly new equine sport. Until the enclosures act which came into force in England in the eighteenth century there had been no need for a horse to jump fencesa as there had been none. But with this act of parliament came new challenges for those followers of fox hounds. The enclosures act brought fencing and boundaries to many parts of the country as common ground was dispersed amoungst the wealthy landowners. This meant that those wishing otoo pursue their sport now needed horses which were capable of jumping these obsticles. In the early shows held France there was a parade of competitors who then took off across country for the jumping. This sport was hoever not popular with spectators as they could not watch the jumping. Soon after the introduction of these parades fences began to appar in the arena. This became known as ‘Lepping’. Fifteen years later, ‘Lepping’ competitions were brought to Britain and by 1900 most of the more important shows had ‘Lepping’ classes although they rarely attracted more than 20 competitors. The ladies, riding side-saddle, had their own classes.

Showjuping Scotland
Scottish Amateur Internations ShowJumping
The Scottish Amateur Inter-Nations Showjumping was an idea first conceived in Scotland by a group of enthusiastic riders from North East Fife Riding Club, who were invited to compete at the famous Ballivor Horse Show in Ireland, for the prestigious Irish Amateur Nations Cup. Whilst in Ireland, the Scottish riders were third overall and it was observed that there were just as many, if not more riders like ourselves, where the majority competing had full-time jobs and enjoyed their showjumping as a hobby. The amateur class in Ireland was very well attended and provided a niche for these riders to compete within their "comfort zone" ranging from 1.10m to 1.30m. Since returning from our trip in 1997, the Scottish Amateur Committee has staged annual events at Dabbs Arena, Fife.

Scoring
The first time a refusal occurs, the penalty is three faults; six faults are given for the second, and the third constitutes elimination. A penalty of four faults is incurred each time a fence is knocked down and the penalty for the horse touching the water at a water jump is also four faults.
Penalties can also be incurred for exceeding the time allowed to complete the course. The winner is the horse and rider combination with the fewest jumping and time penalties.
Frequently, several horses complete the course without penalty and advance to a jump-off over a shortened course. In the jump-off, the same scoring rules apply, except that in the case of equal faults, the horse with the fastest time will be declared the winner. Regulations Governing Show Jumping
International show jumping competitions are governed by the Federation Equestre Internationale, which sets forth rules and regulations.

The Winner of the 2003 Derby
Peter Charles This is the meeting that every aspiring champion wants to be at! This year’s DFS Derby, with obstacles to test the nerve of horse and rider, is the competition they all want to win! It’s the thrills and spills which draw the crowds, and increased prize money of £75,000 that attracts the bravest competitors. If you want to really appreciate what is involved, take a walk up to the massive fences during Sunday’s public course walk. At this meeting, even the juniors get into the act. The Hickstead Pony Masters carries Europe’s richest prize for juniors, who fight through qualifying competition to reach a final in the International Arena. Another highlight is the nail biting Gladwish Land Sales Speed Derby that usually brings an enthusiastic crowd to their feet as riders negotiate Hickstead’s famous permanent obstacles at the gallop.
