Inveraray Shinty Club Women's Team
Win for 'Aray women 18th April 2004
INVERARAY Women's Shinty team took on St Andrews University on Sunday in Inveraray's first match for nine months. From the first throw up the pace was fast and furious with Inveraray dominating play and gaining the first goal, scored by Vicky Lindsay.
The St Andrews side were quick to reply and after a battle in the Inveraray defence managed to net and even the score. The Inveraray team were determined not to let the St Andrews side capitalise on the even scoreline and dug in hard for the second half. Although the ground was soft and play slowed considerably, the midfield and the forwards in the Inveraray side worked well together to keep play away from their goal and an injured Cassie Lindsay managed to score Inveraray's second goal before retiring from the game.
St Andrews piled on the pressure and Linda Divers, the Inveraray goalkeeper, had to make some saves. The scorelinefinished 2-1 to Inveraray
Both teams retired muddy and tired to Fernpoint Hotel who provide hospitality for the home matches.
To thank Fernpoint for their sponsorship the team have printed Fernpoint on their new strips, which were funded by an Awards for All grant last year.

Shinty club leads community action in Lochcarron
Lochcarron Camanachd Shinty Club is one of the many community-based organisations to apply successfully to RACE for Community Action Grants (CAGs). The club is among the most active of community organisations in this small west coast village and in tandem with a project to create a full-size shinty pitch it set out to develop an adjacent area of land as a playground for pre-school children. The £34,500 extension to the shinty pitch was supported with a CAG of £13,800 from RACE and additional funds from the Scottish Sports Council Lottery Fund. Meanwhile, a £2,830 CAG helped to complete the funding package for the £27,400 playground which was also supported by the National Lotteries Charity Board and Smiths Charity. Lochcarron Camanachd Shinty Club representative, George Hendry, said: "Lochcarron has traditionally been an under-funded community - which means that we are well experienced at raising money. On both these projects I feel very positive about RACE's contribution. They were extremely helpful and constructive from the beginning - and it's true to say that without the help of RACE neither project would not have happened." Shinty in Munich
Shinty is Scotland's national sport. The game has sometimes been described as 'hockey without rules' but the lack of restrictions in shinty results in a hard, fast and skil ful game with a big enjoyment factor.
In the Middle Ages Shinty games were already played in the Highlands. In Ireland a similar sport "Hurling" was played. Later the hockey sport was derived from shinty and hurling by introduction of additional rules.

Zoom-in to bottom-right Edinburgh Castle from Bruntsfield with hurling being played in the foreground The Picture Here is an interesting early engraving looking to the north from Bruntsfield towards Edinburgh Castle . The steeple of St Giles church can be seen on the right-hand side of the picture. There appears to be a glimpse of the Borough Loch in the foreground. The Borough Loch was drained long ago. The game being played appears to be hurling, though some have thought it to be golf. Thank you to John Burnett, author of books on early Scottish sport who gave me the following advice: "It is 99% likely to be shinty. The game was certainly played by boys in Edinburgh in the first half of the 19th century, and I think the figures are supposed to be boys / apprentices / young men. The lack of full teams is of no consequence - games were often played with small numbers until late in the century. Shinty was in fact common in Lowland Scotland until c.1850 and I will add this.

Posted by Bookworm on December 19, 2003 at 17:45:47: In Reply to: Re: Sixes and Sevens/ Shinty posted by Bookworm on December 19, 2003 at 17:42:07: : : : I've tried any number of places but I can't find the origin of "by sixes and sevens" or "halved by sixes and sevens". It's driving me crazy! I'm not even sure how to use the expression properly. : : Here's what I've found out over the years. There may be other explanations!
: : If someone is at sixes and sevens then they are in a quandary; they don't quite know what to do next. The saying originates from a situation in 1327 and relates to the Guilds of Tradesmen in the City of London. The Merchant Taylors and the Skinners were founded within a few days of each other, five other Guilds having already received their charters. The age of each Guild dictated its position in the Lord Mayor's procession. The Merchant Taylors and the Skinners argued for fifty years as to which should go sixth in the procession. In the end, in 1494, Sir Robert Billesden, the current Lord Mayor, decreed that they should take it in turns to go sixth and seventh.
: : An alternative explanation that the saying has something to do with throwing dice is much less likely, and far less romantic.
