    to Mabelvale Middle School, Home of the Red Raiders. Mabelvale is located in Southern Pulaski County and serves approximately 600 students from seven elementary schools. Mabelvale opened in 1952, and became part of the Little Rock School District in 1987. Last year Mabelvale, along with the other junior high schools in the district, made the transition from junior high school to middle school. The student population is now made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Mabelvale has a closed campus which includes 42 classrooms, cafeteria, gymnasium, and football/soccer field. The school has a well-maintained campus with six new classrooms and newly remodeled facilities and entrances. Even more renovations are currently being scheduled as a result of the millage passage this spring. Over 50 faculty members are available to provide instruction in academics and related arts and sciences. Mabelvale instructors embrace the teaming concept, and meet regularly to conference with parents, coordinate services with support staff, and plan across the curriculum.     Currently, approximately 80 students are undergoing training in the following disciplines:
    • Athletics Basketball Football Netball Volleyball
    At the end of the training programme, 40 athletes and 7 officials will be selected to represent St. Lucia at the Games. The Athletics will be held at the newly built National Stadium in Saint Aubine, Vieux Fort, the Football at the Mindoo Phillip Park and the rest of the games at the Vigie Sports Complex. Last year, St. Lucia shared the championship with Grenada. The Team Manager for this year is Youth and Sports Officer, Valeriana St. Helen.     Sports
    Team sports are seasonal. Fall includes cheerleading, junior varsity and varsity football, and junior varsity and varsity volleyball. Winter includes cheerleading, junior varsity and varsity boys' basketball, junior varsity and varsity girls' basketball, and wrestling. Spring includes co-ed track and field, baseball, and softball. Students develop a lifelong appreciation for the benefits of physical activity. By joining a sports team, students learn the importance of commitment, discipline, determination, goal setting, and time management. They also enjoy to the fullest the spirit of competition, school spirit, and positive team unity.
    Physical Education
    Students take PE throughout their years at KDES and MSSD. Students learn about a variety of team and individual sports. Both team and individual sports classes introduce fundamental and basic skills, terms, rules, scoring, safety, and etiquette. Students learn the physics of the balls used in the sports, and the history of sports. The many achievements of deaf athletes, and the variety of both national organizations and deaf organizations serving deaf athletes, are discussed. Instruction in weight lifting, exercise, nutrition, and fitness are also included to help students learn the importance and benefit of fitness, body, and health.
