NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL SPORTS The National Secondary School Sports was held at the National Stadium on the 3rd and 4th of April. This sports meeting was unique due to the fact that there were no zonal qualifing heats. Each school had to enter a specified number of competitiors per event; usually one or two. It consisted of four distinct age groups for both boys and girls: Class 1 - 17-20: Class 2 - U/17: Class 3 Several training sessions were held on the school compound on Saturday mornings. Naparima Girls' High School students trained together with the Presentation Squad. These coaching sessions were led by Ronald B. Rogers, who runs for the Cole Cold Brooklyn Sports Club. The team Captain was Van Cowan, who represents Trintoc Point-a.Pierre Sports Club. The Sports meeting, on the whole was not as exciting as one would have expected, but nevertheless, it was a new experience for most of the team. The competition from rival schools was very high, but Presentation College shone gold through the efforts of Van Cowan. Van, in a thrilling display of power and speed, won the 200 m. for boys Under 20. Cohn Osbourne, a characteristic late starter but a powerful sprinter once going, came 2nd in the 100 m. Boys Under 20.

Sports equity is important at the middle and secondary school levels, not only to increase opportunities for young women in sports and physical activity, but to change perceptionsparticularly the incorrect perception that sports participation is not important for girls and women. This Digest will provide background information about gender equity as well as specific strategies for achieving equity at the middle and secondary school levels.
WHAT IS GENDER EQUITY
Gender equity may have many different meanings within the various academic and nonacademic programs offered by a school. In sports, gender equity "describes an environment in which fair and equitable distribution of overall athletic opportunities, benefits, and resources is available to women and men and in which student-athletes, coaches, and athletics administrators are not subject to gender-based discrimination. An athletics program is gender equitable when either the men's or women's sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall program of the other gender" (National Collegiate Athletic Association, 1993, p. 1).

Union sees problem with break for school sports tournaments
21 May 2004
A break in the school year for winter sports could be disruptive, teachers union the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) said today.
It was commenting on today's announcement by the Government that from 2006 the school year will begin in February, either immediately after Waitangi Day or as close to that date as possible. In addition, term three would include a week's holiday to enable secondary schools to take part in national winter sports tournaments. NZEI, which represents support staff in secondary schools, area school teachers and primary school staff, welcomed the slightly later start to the school year, saying it would avoid the stop-start disruption Waitangi Day could cause in the first week. "This is a sensible move that will be welcomed by schools," NZEI president Colin Tarr said in a statement.
