Choose a region to begin your scuba adventure in BC Diving Preparation and Safety Diving off the Coast of BC I n recent years, diving, has become a main stream recreational sport, more and more people are enjoying what the ocean waters have to offer. The waters off the coast of British Columbia have some of the best diving sites in the world, where the marine life is said to be the most varied and colourful in North America. The North Pacific waters are home to more than 5,000 species of invertebrates, near 400 species of fish, as well as a great abundance of algae and kelp. Dungeness crabs, prawns, lingcod and large octopuses are often seen when diving in B.C. coastal waters. Another very attractive feature about diving here is the protected coastline, making this a very safe and accessible diving region, which is well known with divers throughout the world. © 1995 - 2004 Interactive Broadcasting Corporation

The fringes and reefs found off Barbados blossom with healthy sponges, coral and plant life. There are several types of reefs, each one unique in its own special way. The barrier reefs, located 1/2 - 2 miles from shore contain large coral heads which form the habitat for thousands of beautiful fish. Larger organisms are also found on these reefs, feeding on the smaller fish. The Hawksbill turtle can also be found on these reefs. Fringes and patching reefs are found closer to shore and have smaller coral formations and more abundant plant life then the barrier reefs. These reefs are home to Sea Horses, Frog Fish, Giant Sand Eels and many other marine creatures. Wrecks form fascinating habitats for marine life and Barbados has several excellent sites for wreck diving. Carlisle Bay, with 200 reported wrecks, and the Stavronikita, located at Folkestone Marine Park , are two of the most popular sites.

So you like fish, you like to get all dressed up in tight-fitting stuff, and you like to strap all sorts of things on. You're also interested in scuba-diving, though, so let's talk about that and keep this clean. Fact number one: the word "scuba" is actually the acronym "S.C.U.B.A." What does SCUBA stand for? Well, it's not "So, Can U Breathe Alright?" It stands for "Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus," mostly because scuba diving involves using a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. Scuba diving is a popular watersport; so popular that over one million people become certified scuba divers worldwide every year. It basically involves putting a heavy tank full of compressed air on your back and diving into deep water with a tiny rubber tube being the only thing that keeps you alive. Still interested? Then read on, intrepid explorer. The first step to becoming a scuba diver is to determine how serious your interest is. Will you dive in warm waters a few times a year at some pricey resorts or are you interested in hardcore cold water diving and exploring shipwrecks? It's important to ask yourself questions like these because you can enjoy diving without becoming certified. If you vacation in popular diving spots like the Caribbean, Acapulco, or the

The only living coral reef on the western shores of North America fans out in eight major reef fingers from the beach in front of the Resort. Teeming with many species of tropical fish, this reef and the waters south to the Bay of Los Frailes and north to Las Barracas has been designated a National Marine Park by the government of Mexico. The sport has become extremely popular in the last two decades, due in part to places like Bonaire, which has taken great pains to preserve the underwater world by establishing one of the first marine parks in the Caribbean. The other reason Bonaire has become such a popular destination is the wide variety of fish life and the ease of diving that the island offers. Diving is easy Photo Courtesy of Julie Morgan Dive Conditions Bonaire's pristine reefs and diverse marine life are unique to the Caribbean. Because the waters around Bonaire are designated as an official marine park, diving Bonaire is like diving the Caribbean the way it used to be - untouched and unspoiled. The island's location in the south Caribbean gives it an arid climate with little rain fall; consequently, the waters are exceptionally clear of silt, calm, and diveable year round. It is an ideal destination for underwater photographers. Water temperatures average a warm 78-84°F (25.6-28.9°C), with visibility averaging over 100 feet (30m), and frequently reaching up to 150 feet (50m).
