Introduction to Land Sailing The popularity of land sailing is growing rapidly. Land sailing involves a land sailer, which can also be called a sand yacht, land yacht, or dirt boat. It is basically a boat with wheels that moves via sail power on firm ground or paved surfaces. More than ever before, you can find people sailing in parking lots and in urban parks. Dry lakebeds and other hard sand surfaces are probably still the most popular places to land sail. Land sailing is still considered an "Extreme" sport, but it is being enjoyed by an ever increasing and diverse set of athletes. Many water sailors are attracted to the sport since they have already mastered many of the skills necessary to be a successful land sailor. More and more new people are being attracted to the sport, however, who have no previous sailing background. It is definitely not necessary to have a sailing background in order to become successful at land sailing. The first modern land sailers began to appear in the 1960s and 1970s. These yachts were primarily designed for dry lakebeds, and the sport was largely confined to the American Southwest, New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Many of the sailers were homebuilt out of a variety of materials, creating very unique boats. Now, however, many companies produce micro-yachts which are rugged, but light and inexpensive. They can easily be taken apart and transported. Best of all, they are easy to learn on.

Prologue........      When we left off the end of April 2001, I had just finished up a super adventure at sea on the SV Flying Cloud in the British Virgin Islands with the Texans.   I had heard in the wind that the Lemke's of Austin had booked yet another one for the second week of June 2002 out of St. Lucia on the Polynesia.  The Stickneys of Dallas soon followed a booking of their own for that week.   I was asked if I would join them. After much pondering as to what I had in mind for holiday in the year 2002, I finally decided a few days before Thanksgiving to book my adventure.   Since the "Poly" is my ship, I couldn't let the Dallas Stickney's sail her without me!!!  And so yet another chapter in "A Windjammer Adventure" was born.      Instead of sailing out of St. Lucia as was originally planned, Windjammer decided to change our itinerary to the ABC's out of Aruba instead; going to somewhere's off the coast of Venezuela.   Suited me just fine as I've never been to Aruba before; just heard about it.      After a very cold and damp spring in Upstate New York it was time to think about goin' 'jammin'      Landed in Aruba about half-past 8pm, went through Immigration and Customs, grabbed a cab, and got to the Aruba Grand Hotel and Casino a tad bit before 9:30pm. As the winning boat crosses the finish line of the final race, the Commodore of the victorious yacht club will magically pull a written challenge out of his pocket and declare, "we have just received a challenge by (club) and we will defend the Cup in (date) and sail (boats). While this process is part fun and part ceremonial, the two clubs have an important responsibility to set high standards for the next match."     During its tenure, the current Challenger of Record, the Punta Ala Yacht Club's Prada Challenge took little input from the other eight teams and were quietly berated by nearly every stakeholder.
