Real tennis
Real Tennis is the original racquet game. It is also known as Royal Tennis, Court Tennis (America), and jeu de paume (France). The rules evolved over centuries from those of an earlier game, similar to Fives Pelota or Handball , played since the 12th century by hitting a ball with the hand against the walls of monasteries. The rules stabilised around 1600. The game was popular among 18th and 19th century aristocrats, but there are still only a few dozen courts in the world. The basic rules and scoring are similar to those of modern lawn tennis , which derives from real tennis. However real tennis has extra complexities in which the ball is played to bounce twice. Tennis
Royal tennis is the distant ancestor of lawn tennis, the game today played all over the world. As with many other games and sports, the original version dates back to ancient times. Racket and ball games, with ping-pong type, rackets are known from ancient Egypt and Persia, and tennis-like games were played by at least the 11th century, almost 1000 years ago. But the medieval tennis game appears to have its direct origin in handball games. These games were played by striking the ball with a bare hand. The original ball used was made of tightly rolled cloth pieces stitched together Later the hand was wrapped up to give the ball more spring, and probably to protect the hand. Later still, string rackets were used.
In France Jeux de Paume (palm play) became popular with both the nobility in their enclosed courts and the ordinary people who played longe-paume on common land. The medieval annal of St. Foix written around 1300 AD describes the game: "The exercise consists in receiving the ball and driving it back again with the palm. The game was first played with the bare hand, then with the glove, lined or unlined; afterwards they bound cord or rattin around the hand to make the ball rebound more forcibly."
Royal tennis, as the name might tell you, was popular with the kings of both England and France in the 16th and 17th centuries. The sport is mentioned in Shakespeare's play, Henry V, when the French crown prince sent a gift of tennis balls to the English king as a form of insult (I guess that's sort of like getting underwear for your birthday). A famous tennis court was built in 1530 for King Henry VIII at his palace in Hampton Court. The earliest set of complete rules dates from 1599. The rules for the modern game of tennis were drawn up a little more than 100 years ago in 1878.

Tennis is usually played outdoors with a racket and ball by two (singles) or four players (doubles) on a court of turf or hard surface such as clay or now commonly paved surface. The modern game of lawn tennis was invented in England during 1873 by Major Walter C. Wingfield, a British Army Officer, for use at garden parties. Major Winfoeld claimed that he modeled the game, which he called "spharistike," after an aincient Greek game. Authorities now believe that he simply adapted to outdoor play the principles of the widely popular came of court tennis.
    Terminology
While the game of tennis is the same everywhere, the name given to the game differs around the world. The actual name of tennis originates from the latin verb "teneo" (I fetch) and initially gave the old english word "Tenetz" that was then modified into "Tynes" then "Tenyse" to finally give the actual name of tennis. Many different terms and in fact differentb games have appeared around the world.

The game became a favorite of the monks and spread from monastery to monastery. Because the popularity of the game caused a distraction from religious duties, the Catholic Pope banned its play. By the 14th century, the acceptance of the sport had reached the royalty of France and England . In England the game was known as 'royal tennis'. The beginnings of Tennis
Tennis originated in France in the 12th century and was referred to as "jeu de paume," the game of the palm, played with the bare hand. As early as the 12th century, a glove was used to protect the hand. Then starting in the 16th century and continuing until the middle of the 18th century, rackets of varying shapes and sizes were introduced. The racket as we know it today, but with a lopsided head, thick gut, and longer handle was being used in 1750. The shape of the racket enabled the player to scoop balls out of the corners (walls and floor were considered in-bounds) and also to put ‘cut’ or ‘spin’ on the ball. (
    The Tennis Ball
The first tennis balls were made of leather stuffed with wool or hair. They were hard enough to cause a serious injury and could even kill someone. Starting in the 18th century, ¾" strips of wool were wound tightly around a nucleus made by rolling a number of strips into a little ball. Then string was tied in many directions around the ball and a white cloth covering was sewn around the ball.

Tennis regained its Olympic status at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul after 64 years of absence. Tennis is a game played either two or four players standing on opposite sides of a net on a rectangular field, using a stringed racket and a rubber ball covered with fabric made of wool and synthetic fiber. The aim is to hit the ball over the net in such a way as to make it hard for the opponent to return it. In most tournaments, the match is judged at three winning sets, each of which ends with six winning games and with a difference of two points between the opponents.
