painting here (and larger here-43K ) shows the outside of the Royal Tennis Court and Hampton Court Palace. Tennis was played on this site by Henry VIII from 1528. As a young, handsome, athletic man Henry was passionately addicted to sport, and particularly to tennis. Legend has it that he heard of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn as he played tennis at Hampton Court Palace. During the 17th century various improvements were made to the court. One of the first acts of Charles II after his restoration in 1660 was to order the extensive refitting of the Tudor Tennis Court. This included the laying of a new tile floor, the remodelling of the galleries and repairs to the roof. At the same time, new nets, curtains and velvet cushions for the spectator's seats were provided. The interlaced initials above the net on the wall opposite the corridors (reproduced above right ) are however not those of Charles but of William and Mary (1689-1702). Since the end of the 17th century the court has undergone little alteration. However progress is not incompatible with history: in 1975 sodium halide lighting was installed making the court the best lit in Great Britain and possibly anywhere.

(sign up now free) Royal Tennis Heats Up in Boston August 4, 2003: by Dan Kneipp Royal Tennis in Boston: Ron Beck On Fire Despite Being Smoked By Kneipp!!! This is a very strange story. It involves squash fanatics playing Royal Tennis, Boston, SquashTalk, Kneipps, five fire engines, a shy yet gallant hero and a singed Ron Beck. Where to begin? www.tandr.org then click on Real Tennis In their defense neither of them really saw the intensity of the flames that nearly engulfed Ron, and both could see the sauna door from their position and despite the smoke building up, there were no visible flames or extremely obvious immediate danger. I screamed at both of them to leave and grabbed my squash bag and moved to the reception area. As I had just left the jacuzzi I was only clad in a towel and saw getting properly dressed as a pretty insignificant priority. We are sponsored by Asics We returned to the scene the following day. The club had fire notices posted and fire restoration vans were parked outside. The club was closed to members. One of the men in charge of the club let us look at the damage. It was surprising how little there was. The fire had been contained to just the sauna and the locker room had virtually no damage. We were thanked for stopping a fire that could have easily burnt the building down. I was hoping to get a picture of the scene, but considering how well the fire was contained and the job done by the clean up crew left a very anti-climatic scene. The club manager, Tom Dobbins, who was relieved we weren't hurt, said, "It's a good thing you guys were there. If you hadn't been in the locker room just then the whole club might have burned."

A ROYAL TENNIS COURT JK GILLON Edinburgh's Royal Tennis Court was in a covered building just outside the gates of Holyrood Palace. Royal or Real Tennis originated in France. It is considered the oldest and most difficult of all ball games and was a fashionable amusement in the 16th and 17th centuries in Scotland. It is much more elaborate than modern tennis. Play involves hitting a ball with racquets both over a net and against the walls of the court.
The Duke of Albany, later James VII of Scotland, was among the players in the Royal Tennis court. The Royal Tennis Court is also connected with early Scottish theatre. In the latter part of the 16th century, several theatrical companies performed in a temporary theatre at the Royal Tennis Court. In 1601, an English company of actors, headed by a Laurence Fletcher, 'comedian to his Majestie', appeared at the Royal Tennis Court. Among Fletcher's company was William Shakespeare. It is generally agreed that he visited Scotland at this time and sketched out a plan for Macbeth.
Members of the Royal Family, including the future Queen Anne, took part in some of the many plays. The last recorded theatrical presentation at the Royal Tennis Court was in 1714 when Macbeth was performed 'in the presence of a brilliant array of Scottish Nobles, after an archery competition'.

Real tennis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Real Tennis is the original racquet game. It is also known as Royal Tennis, Court Tennis (America), and jeu de paume (France). Players generally just call it "tennis", as opposed to "lawn tennis", but this use of language is obscure. The rules evolved over centuries from those of an earlier game, similar to fives pelota or handball , played since the 12th century by hitting a ball with the hand against the walls of monasteries . The rules stabilised around . The game was popular among and 19th century aristocrats, but today are only a few dozen courts in the world. This is partly because a real tennis court is a very substantial building (a larger area than a lawn tennis court and with walls and ceiling to contain all but the highest lob shots). In the UK there is something of a revival with new courts are being built, including a recent one at Clifton College The basic rules and scoring are similar to those of modern lawn tennis , which derives from real tennis. The ball is much heavier and less bouncy, nearly as heavy as a cricket ball and racquets are small and strengthened. Real tennis is enclosed by walls with sloping roofs and buttresses which may all be played off. The ball has to be served by rolling it along the roof to the left hand side of the server and service only happens from one end of the court. It has extra complexities in that when the ball bounces twice the receiving player does not generally lose the point outright, but gets the chance to replay the point from the other end under the obligation of getting every shot to have a second bounce further back from the net than the shot he failed to reach. This feature prevents drop shots and combined with the skill involved means that Real Tennis is an unusual sport in which people reach their prime later in life.

"KING OF GAMES, GAME OF KINGS" Real Tennis as it is called in Britain, Royal Tennis as it is called in Australia, Court Tennis as it is called in the States, Jeu de Paume as it is called in France or Tennis as it is properly known, is the oldest of all the racket games, and unlike most of the others, such as squash or lawn tennis, it is a product of evolution rather than pure invention. The game started to form into something recognisable in the 11th century. It started as hand ball, played by monks around the cloisters of monasteries in Italy and France, much as schoolchildren do in any appropriate corner of their school, and rules varied to suit local whims and conditions. Gradually, as monks travelled to other monasteries, the more enjoyable rules were more generally adopted, the more bizarre rules abandoned and people started to add features to their courtyards that improved the pastime, and demolish or modify others that detracted from it. The monks enjoyed the game so much that the Pope banned the playing of it, and by the 14th century the game had spread from cloister to castle and become a game of the nobility.
