    The Atlanta Rowing Club
was founded in 1974. In 1983, the first formal draft of the organization's bylaws and rules of order were approved by the club's Officers and Board Of Directors. At that time, the Officers and Board Of Directors approved the following as the club's purpose, definition, and charter: "The purpose of the Atlanta Rowing Club is to be a non-profit organization formed and maintained to promote the sport of rowing, to teach and train oarsmen and oarswomen without preference to race, creed, religion, or color, to provide the equitable means for both recreational and competitive rowing, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, to develop the sport of rowing as a interscholastic and intercollegiate sport in the Atlanta metropolitan area, to maintain the natural beauty and ecological balance of the Chattahoochee river and surrounding area, and finally, to provide a means for community and charitable involvement in the Atlanta metropolitan area." We hope you find this site useful in finding information about our club, The Head of the Chattahoochee (our fall regatta) and that you will visit us at our facilities along the Chattahoochee River. Established 1992 Welcome to our attempt to display some information about the History of Rowing with emphasis on North American rowing. This site will be an ongoing project. Hopefully over a period of time it will grow into a substantial resource on rowing history. We hope that all information is as accurate as can be. Sometimes the sources may be newspaper articles and personal recollections and may not be as accurate as expected. If you have any input, corrections, or suggestions - please contact us. The Friends of Rowing History is an informal group interested in the rich history of rowing. In 1992 the group comprised of Ted English, Llewllyn Howland, Tom Mendenhall, Bill Miller, Hart Perry, Bob Reed, Julien Tavener, and Tom Weil assembled at the Union Boat Club - Boston to share their common interest in celebrating rowing's past. Many ideas were expressed on how to preserve this history before it all fades away and crumbles into dust. We are working closely with the National Rowing Foundation and also with Mystic Seaport to help establish a rowing history presence. We are happy to have anyone with a similar interest join us as well and any organization or association that could use some support to contact us. Again this is a very informal and loosely organized group.
