Roller Skating
Roller-skating was introduced in 1863, and it was quickly made fashionable by the elite of New York City. The 1870’s rinks with hard maple had built floors in nearly every town and city. By paying an admission fee of twenty-five or fifty cents, men, women, and children could participate in races, fancy skating, or dancing on skates. Special skating dresses, which allowed more freedom of movement, became popular by the 1870’s. Indicative of the extent of the craze was this wry comment by the editors of Harper’s weekly, in the form of a potential gravestone inscription for a departed skater: Our Jane has climbed the golden stair And passed the jasper gates; Henceforth she will have wings to wear, Instead of roller skates. The popularity of roller skating waned by the 1890’s, but like ice skating it helped lead to more freedom in dress and behavior for women.

National Museum of roller skating
The National Museum of Roller Skating in Lincoln, Nebraska celebrates all types of roller skating from dancing to Roller Derby.
Ever wonder where you can find the world's largest collection of world skates? At the National Museum of Roller Skating in Lincoln, Nebraska, where roller skating's history in sport, recreation, entertainment, and business is contained. The first documented roller skate was invented in London in 1710. These early skates were little more than boards with wheels. The world of roller skating changed forever in 1863 when James L. Plimpton patented his "rocking skate" in the United States. This revolutionary motion enabled skaters to steer by leaning to the left or right, the same technique that is used with the high-tech marvels used to roller skate today. bodyOffer(32028) The popularity of roller skating zoomed. Plimpton opened a public rink and leased his new skates to the public. The first skating organization, the New York Roller Skating Association, formed in 1863. Speed and distance races became common in cities across America. In the 1930s modern show skating began which led to "Skating Vanities" a performance troupe similar to today's Ice Capades in 1942. The first United States Artistic Roller Skating Championships were held in 1939. Today roller skaters compete in American Dance and World Class Dance. Roller hockey organized in the early part of the century, played with a ball rather than a puck. This no-contact sport enters the Olympics as an exhibition sport in 1992.

      ROLLER SKATING
      by Su Egen
Siva was a relatively new member of the household when I purchased Jennifer Warshaw's book, The Parrot Training Handbook. He already knew his basic commands of "up", "down", "it's okay" and "no". I began by carefully reading the book from cover to cover and decided to start with something simple. I had previously used the smallest room in the studio for taming and speech training for Cado, my "slightly used" Blue Fronted Amazon, a wild caught bird, rescued from a less than perfect situation. The room had one major drawback for him and that was the overhead florescent work lights which he found utterly fascinating. I began by taking the t-perch into the room and placing Siva on it. He was already used to this perch, so it was quite comfortable for him. I opened the book and decided he should learn to wave and say hello. I waved to him and said "hello". He waved back at me and said "hello". I told him good bird and tickled him under his left wing, which has come to be his reward. I sat down in astonishment, thinking, "Wow, that was easy", and thought I must have a genius on my hands. I repeated the exercise several more times and Siva responded with "hello" and a wave each time. Quickly I ran to get Ned, so as to verify this great accomplishment, and again with glee, Siva performed over and over again.
