V382780 To The Top The Black Cliff is situated on Valencia Island in Co. Kerry to the west of the cliff top radio station. From Cahersiveen the island can be reached by ferry at Reenard point. A cheaper but slightly longer route from Cahersiveen is via the bridge at Portmagee. This is the complex black cliff between the steep sided inlet called Coosnahorna and the tumble down Fogher Cliff, on the SW side of Reenadrolaun Point. The height ranges from 35m to 60m. The first eight routes can be reached by an abseil over The Lobster of Incontinence. In calm seas, the first 16 can be reached below 3/4 tide. In big seas, waves can come over the top. The easiest escape, bar Jumaring is E1. The rock is a generally sound sandy slate, there is little loose rock but edged are very sharp and care should be taken with rope work and abseils. Before beginning, however, climbers should get professional instruction so they understand how to use ropes to protect themselves against the forces of gravity Climbers choose nylon ropes because they stretch and absorb the shock of a fall. Good climbing ropes will stretch to double their original length before breaking and have a breaking strength of over three tons of force. Ropes are used in two ways. In "top roping" (the safest method), climbers fix webbing to an immovable object at the top of a cliffusually a tree or a rock. They attach the webbing to a carabiner . Then they pass a rope through the carabiner, letting the two ends dangle down the side of the cliff. One end is tied to the climber. The other is tied to and held by a person at the bottom, who keeps the rope taut to stop a fall.
