A very nice book on the little told world of oldtimer hockey tours.
There is one scene in the book, where the oldtimers play a gag on an unsuspecting rock singer on one of the teams that night, that is hysterical. Overall, very worthwhile for hard-core hockey fans. Hockey splits weekend on the road Dan Berrigan
Staff writer Carol Matteucci The Daily Illini Matt Ingersoll, left, and Brad Eaton attempt to block a Michigan State player from reaching the puck Oct. 11. Illinois won the game 7-2. The Illini lost their first game at Kent State 4-3, before defeating the Golden Flashes 6-1 in game two. On the road against Kent State, the Illini showed both faces of their persona, losing the first game 4-3 and winning game two, 6-1. "We were all over them right from the bat Saturday," senior forward Pat Olson said. "But on Friday, they took it to us." Their loss to Kent State is the first time the Illini have lost to the Golden Flashes since they entered the league in 1994. In Friday's game, the Illini came out of the gate terribly and fell behind 3-0 to the Golden Flashes early in the first period. Senior goaltender Tim Danlow was yanked after the third goal and finished with a rare 40 percent save percentage. "We just needed a change, and it was nothing Tim had done," Illinois head coach Chad Cassel said. "The team just needed a spark."

WMU embarks on final road swing

The Western Michigan University hockey team plays in its final road trip of the season by taking on No. 10-ranked Miami University for two games in Oxford, Ohio, this weekend. As the final two weeks of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season roll around, the Broncos (16-14-3, 12-11-2 CCHA) and three other teams (University of Alaska-Fairbanks, University of Notre Dame, and Northern Michigan University) are competing for the last two home-ice playoff spots. WMU currently holds down the last home slot for CCHA first-round action set for March 12-14. Competing for that final spot is UND, just a point behind in seventh place, and NMU, which stands three points back. UAF also factors into the picture, being just a point ahead of WMU in the standings. WMU swept MU last season in Kalamazoo, but the RedHawks' Goggin Arena has not been friendly to the Broncos over the years. The Brown and Gold are winless in their last nine games (0-7-2) in Oxford, dating back to December, 1995.

The Western Michigan University hockey team takes a break from conference action by hitting the road to take on No. 11 Cornell University for a two-game set in Ithaca, N.Y. The Broncos (2-3-1, 2-3-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) look to rebound from a disappointing weekend last week against Michigan State University. WMU took a 2-1 lead into the third period on Friday at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, but gave up three unanswered third period goals to lose 4-2. The Broncos were humiliated 7-3 by the Spartans on "Blackout Saturday" in front of a sellout crowd at Lawson Ice Arena. MSU finished 4-for-7 on the power play and outshot the Broncos 30-16. Cornell came into Kalamazoo last season ranked seventh in the country and completed a weekend sweep with a 6-1 win and a 3-2 overtime victory. The Big Red rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second game behind two goals by senior forward Ryan Vesce, including the game winner 90 seconds into overtime.

Hockey Loses a Pair of Road Games
By Matthew Van Horne TEAM MEMBER After a fast start to the season, beating Daniel Webster and WPI 3-1 and 3-2 respectively, the Engineers had a rough set of two games on the road. On November 10, the team made the long trip to Lyndonville, Vermont to play the Lyndon State Hornets. MIT came out fast in the first two periods, going into the locker room before the last period ahead 4-2. However, some overconfidence and a few ill-timed penalties gave the Hornets the break they needed to get back into the game. Lyndon State was able to sneak three goals in during the final period to win the game 5-4. The game was not over yet as MIT got a face-off deep in the Bryant end a minute later. The Engineers won the face-off and Brent R. Fisher G was left wide open near the net with the puck. Fisher put a shot past the Bryant goalie to tie the game at one goal each. The score remained at 1-1 as time expired sending the game into a five minute, sudden-death overtime. Parker E. Larson G won the face off, but had the puck stolen from his stick by a Bryant defender. The defender hit a breaking teammate for their fourth breakaway of the game. This time they found the back of the net, beating Van Horne to his right side. The Engineers, now 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the league, continue a five game home stand with Coast Guard on Saturday, December 1.

Men's hockey struggles on the road
By Ted Williams Published: Friday, January 31, 2003 Two disappointing losses at Nebraska-Omaha have placed the Ohio State men's hockey team in a pivotal position.
"This is separation weekend," said OSU coach John Markell. "We thought last weekend was, but we lost two, and we stayed in second place (CCHA). That doesn't happen any more."
The first game of the series with UNO had OSU bombard Maverick goaltender Dan Ellis with 41 shots.
But Ellis was up to the task as he stopped every Buckeye shot.
"He was just unbelievable, and you could feel it. You knew he was in for a good game," said goaltender Mike Betz.
Violence broke out toward the end of the game as OSU defenseman Nate Guenin and UNO player Jason Jaworski were penalized with five-minute fighting majors and game disqualifications.
Things didn't get much better the next night as OSU fell again, this time 3-1.

Charger hockey fights valiantly on road
By Ian Fletcher Published: Thursday, February 7, 2002 Well, perhaps the three weeks off was not the best thing in the world for the Charger hockey team. The boys in blue returned home from St. Cloud, Minnesota without a victory.
Up against the then fifth ranked team in the country, the Chargers fell short in their attempt to jumpstart the stretch run to the playoffs.
St. Cloud 3, UAH F (Game 1)
The Chargers were prepared for the weekend and came out strong, playing well considering the extended lay-off. However, as the first period went on it was evident that the three weeks off was affecting the play of the Chargers. Combine this with the vastness of an Olympic-sized ice surface, which is similar in size to that of the Atlantic Ocean, it is understandable to incur a period of adjustment.
Where the Chargers struggled Friday night was in the goal-scoring category. The Chargers were up-ended 3-0, but from all accounts the score does not tell the story.

December 14, 2003 The road woes of the University of Alaska Fairbanks hockey team came to an end on Saturday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Saturday as the Nanooks skated to a bizarre Central Collegiate Hockey Association 7-4 victory over the Lake Superior State Lakers. The Nanooks took a 3-0 lead after two periods and made it 4-0 early in the third, but then Lake Superior State made things interesting by playing most of the final 12 minutes without a goalie. The Lakers cut UAF's lead to 5-3 and 6-4 before Cory Rask scored UAF's third empty-net goal of the third period with 54 seconds remaining to account for the final margin. All four of Lake State's goals came with goaltender Matt Violin on the bench. "We knew they were going to do that," UAF coach Guy Gadowsky said in a telephone interview when asked about the final 12 minutes of the game. "I have to give them a lot of credit. They could have folded up the tent and gone home when we made it 4-0, but they came back hard and made it exciting. "Frank (Lake State coach Frank Anzalone) does one heck of a job," Gadowsky said. "They are a disciplined team that competes hard and doesn't give up until the end."

Madison natives' road comedy film explores hockey obsession, growing up
By Rob Thomas
April 3, 2002 They accidentally left $50,000 worth of camera equipment by the side of the road. When the script called for a frigid Wisconsin winter, they got a balmy Indian summer. On the second day of shooting, the van carrying their principal actors crashed on the Beltline. Welcome to the world of independent filmmaking. But now comes the good part for the homegrown makers of the road comedy "No Sleep 'Til Madison," which was shot in and around town two years ago. They get to screen it for the first time before a sold-out audience Thursday, part of the opening-night events at this year's Wisconsin Film Festival. "The only people who have seen this movie are loved ones who are forced to say nice things about it," says Peter Rudy, a Madison native who co-wrote the film. "The fact that this movie sold out so quickly means there are going to be a lot of people who won't feel that obligation to be kind. It's going to be exciting to see a roomful of people reacting to our work." "No Sleep 'Til Madison" screens at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Orpheum Stage Door Theatre. While that screening is sold out, the movie could screen again Sunday if it wins a jury prize at the festival, and the filmmakers are hoping to schedule another local screening sometime down the road.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) made the decision in Lausanne, Switzerland, today after dismissing Greece's claim for the place. "This decision means the world to the game of hockey in South Africa," Charles Smith, president of the South African Hockey Association, told Reuters from Lausanne. The South African men's hockey team missed out on the 2000 Olympics in Sydney when the country's National Olympic Committee declined to send a team. "It erases the bad memories of four years ago and will allow us to market the men's game properly because we can now say there is a future for the sport and 2000 was just a temporary setback," Smith added. "We can now move ahead in trying to get sponsors for the national team."
