    Rhythmic gymnastics
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Rhythmic gymnastics is an sport A sport consists of an everyday activity carried out with a purpose and in an environment different from everyday: for competition, enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of skill, or some combination of these. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess. Therefore jumping over a hurdle in front of thousands in an indoor arena is a sport, whereas jumping a stream during a country walk is simply an attempt to keep one's feet dry.

Competitors are rewarded points by a selected team of judges for leaps, balances, pivots, flexibility, apparatus handling and artistic effect. The Code of Points has been twice in recent years, in 2001 and 2003, with emphasis on technical elements and to promote objectiveness in judging. Also, before 2001, judging was on a scale of 10, it is now on a scale of 30. There are two categories, Juniors, which is for girs under 16, and Seniors, for girls 16 and over. Gymnasts typically start training at a very young age and those at their peak are typically in their late teens or early twenties.

There are five apparatus in rhythmic gymnastics Russia is the top nation in rhythmic gymnastics, followed by Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria and Spain.
    http://www.gymnasticsvictoria.org.au/about_gymnastics_rhythmic.html
Rhythmic gymnasts compete on a floor area of 13 metres square. A balanced composition is achieved with a balance between the gymnast, the apparatus and the music plus required difficulties. The apparatus must be used in both hands, thrown into the air and kept in constant motion. Rhythmic gymnasts also compete in levels 1-10 or in an international stream. There are five apparatus in Rhythmic Gymnastics: BALL - made of rubber or synthetic material and 18-20cm in diameter must rest in the gymnast's hand and not against the wrist. The elements include rolling, throwing and bouncing. The gymnast must use both hands while showing continuous flowing movement over the whole floor area. HOOP - the hoop is made of plastic or wood and is 80-90cm in diameter. Fundamental elements include rotation around the body or hand and rolling. Other elements include swings, circles, figures of eight, throws, passes through and over the hoop. ROPE - a light and supple rope usually made of hemp or synthetic material. Requirements include leaps over the rope and skipping, as well as swings, throws, circles, rotations and figures of eight. CLUBS - characterised by rhythmical tapping, the clubs are made of wood or synthetic material. Fundamental elements include mills and small circles, with other elements such as swings, circles, asymetric movements, throwing and catching. The clubs must be used in both hands and one hand.

Katja, what made you go to South Africa?
About five years ago, a gymnastics club in Cape Town had placed an advert in a German gym magazine, looking for a rhythmic gym coach. I applied for the job, but in the end, my application was passed on to a small club in Durban, where I finally settled.
